"The Waitress Who Sat at His Table" CHAPTER 11 SIT DOWN
CHAPTER 11
SIT DOWN
Mara did not save Adrian with love.
She saved him with the emergency plan he had once called inconvenient.
She pressed her scarf against the wound and told Thomas to call the trauma center listed first in the company protocol. She sent one guard to clear the freight elevator and another to meet the ambulance at the secured loading entrance.
She gave the paramedics the time of the museum injury, Dr. Levin’s treatment notes, Adrian’s allergy, and every medication he had received.
The ambulance left four minutes after he collapsed.
Internal bleeding had filled the space beneath his ribs. Surgeons repaired the damage before noon.
At three seventeen, a physician entered the private waiting room.
"He’s stable."
Mara sat down because her legs stopped belonging to her.
Thomas lowered his head into both hands.
"He’ll hate the recovery restrictions," he said.
"Good. I’ll put them in a spreadsheet."
It took Adrian two days to become unbearable and five to be discharged under guard.
Mara did not move back to Oyster Bay. Her contract allowed her to choose, and the immediate threat had changed. She rented a small furnished apartment in Brooklyn with part of the escrow payment and visited the company during working hours.
Adrian never asked for the address.
That mattered.
The following weeks stripped the glamour from everything.
Viktor and Mikhail Sokolov were indicted on conspiracy, attempted murder, weapons, and commercial-corruption charges. Grant Hale entered a plea negotiation that required full cooperation; threats against his daughter would be considered, but they did not erase the bomb or the lives he had offered to Sokolov.
The Belladonna attackers were folded into the same case. The cleaner who had entered Oyster Bay received separate consideration after investigators confirmed she had been paid to photograph schedules and had not known about the bomb.
Adrian met federal attorneys three times a week.
He closed the off-book routes, dismissed managers who refused oversight, and transferred pension assets into an independently administered trust. Some days, the company stock fell so sharply that business reporters used the word collapse.
The terminals kept operating.
The workers kept getting paid.
That was what remained after power stopped being theater.
The legal consequences remained uncertain. Adrian’s cooperation agreement credited his voluntary disclosure but promised no immunity. His attorneys expected fines, asset forfeiture, and a court-supervised resolution; prosecutors reserved the right to bring personal charges.
He signed anyway.
"You could still lose years," Mara told him after one meeting.
"I already lost years," he said. "I spent them guarding a machine that would have killed anyone who tried to stop it."
"Including you."
"Especially me."
He did not ask her to forgive the things in the ledger. She respected him more for understanding that accountability was not a romantic gesture.
Eli completed his thirty-day transfer and chose another three months of treatment.
Mara visited him on a Sunday afternoon beneath a maple tree in the center courtyard.

He looked healthier. Not magically repaired. Healthier.
"You know you can stop paying for everything now," he said.
"I’m your sister."
"Exactly. Not my parole officer, crisis fund, and human shield."
She looked down at her coffee.
"I don’t know what I am if I’m not fixing something."
"Maybe find out."
Eli smiled, then grew serious.
"I watched the museum footage. The part where Moretti stood in front of the cameras so they couldn’t film you."
"He has occasional useful instincts."
"Do you love him?"
Mara looked across the courtyard at a patient learning to trust his own balance again.
"I don’t know him outside a crisis."
"Then meet him there. Outside one."
Eli leaned back on the bench.
"You don’t have to promise forever just because someone survived with you. You can choose dinner. Then choose tomorrow later."
It was healthier advice than anything Mara had expected from the brother she still sometimes imagined she had to rescue.
On the final day of her ninety-day contract, Mara arrived at Moretti Maritime expecting an exit meeting.
Thomas placed a new agreement before her.
DIRECTOR OF CRISIS OPERATIONS AND COMPLIANCE.
The salary was generous. The authority was not.
She crossed out six clauses.
"I report to the independent board, not directly to Adrian. I control my department’s budget. Removal requires a board vote. And no operational order overrides compliance without a written emergency finding."
Thomas read her revisions.
"You do enjoy making my life difficult."
"It’s in the job description."
"It will be now."
That evening, a car took her to Belladonna.
The restaurant had reopened after months of repairs. New glass overlooked the river. The bullet-scarred panel behind table nine had not been replaced; someone had polished the damaged wood and left the marks visible.
Adrian waited beside the booth.
He was thinner after surgery. The silver at his temple seemed more pronounced. He wore no sling and no visible weapon.
The room still quieted when he entered.
Mara wondered how long that habit would take to die.
Frank Dwyer approached with a menu pressed to his chest. He looked from Adrian to Mara and nearly dropped it.
"Ms. Ellis," he said. "Your old position is available, if you ever—"
"It isn’t," Adrian said.
Mara raised an eyebrow.
He corrected himself immediately.
"Forgive me. That is not my answer to give."
"No," Mara told Frank. "But thank you for finally asking me directly."
Frank retreated.
Adrian looked faintly annoyed with himself. "I was faster at being shot."
"You’ve had more practice."
"Unfortunately true."
"You signed?" he asked.
"Not yet."
He pulled out the seat across from his.
Mara remained standing.
"Problem?"
She placed the revised contract on table nine.
Adrian read every change.
"You cannot fire me by yourself," she said.
"I noticed."
"You cannot order me to your home, choose where Eli receives treatment, or hide operational risks because you think you’re protecting me."
"That section is unusually specific."
"Experience."
He took out a pen.
"You report to the board. You have your own budget. And when you tell me I’m wrong, there will be a permanent written record."
"Terrifying, isn’t it?"
"More than the elevator."
He signed.
Mara added her name beneath his.
Only then did she sit.
No waiter approached them. Adrian had arranged privacy, but water and two glasses waited on the table.
He poured hers first.
"There is one matter the contract does not cover," he said.
"That sounds dangerous."
"Dinner. With me. No security briefing, no payroll audit, no murder attempt."
"You’re asking?"
"I am learning."
Mara studied the man across from her.
He had lost the machinery that made fear look effortless. He still faced investigations, possible charges, and a company that would never again belong only to him.
But when the choice came, he had opened the ledger.
He had let the kingdom shrink rather than ask her to help preserve its worst parts.
"One dinner," she said.
"And after that?"
"You can ask again."
Adrian smiled.
Not the thin expression that frightened board members. Not the cold curve Mara had seen at Belladonna on her first night at table nine.
A real smile, uncertain enough to belong to a man rather than an empire.
Outside, the East River carried city light toward the harbor.
Inside, the scarred wall remembered the bullets. The white tablecloth remembered nothing.
Mara rested her hand beside the signed contract and looked around the room where she had once been expected to lower her eyes.
This time, no one mistook her for part of the furniture.

She would take my babies, call it tradition, and teach them that power mattered more than kindness. So I disappeared. I built a company while pregnant. I answered clients while three cribs stood beside my desk. I turned every hour of fear into a future no Montgomery could own. Then they invited me to my ex-husband’s wedding to watch me break.
