"The Mafia King Chose His Son’s Angel" Chapter 7 — The King on His Knees
Chapter 7 — The King on His Knees
The second red dot moved from Damian Cross’s wrist to the hanging light above him.
Glass exploded.
Cross flinched as darkness swallowed his side of the warehouse. Adrian surged from his knees before the fragments reached the floor.
He struck Cross’s gun arm away from Lily and threw his body over hers.
“Down!” Gabriel shouted.
The steel doors burst open. NYPD officers entered from the loading bay while Adrian’s security team descended from the catwalks. Commands thundered through the dark.
Adrian covered Lily’s head as shots struck concrete around them. His wounded side slammed against the floor, but he did not release her.
“I have you,” he said against her hair. “You’re going home.”
Cross disappeared through a service door.
Gabriel started after him.
“No,” Adrian ordered. “Get Lily out.”
“I can take her. You can still reach Cross.”
Adrian tore at the knots around Lily’s wrists with shaking fingers.
“I didn’t come for Cross.”
The rope fell away.
Lily stared at him. Blood had spread across his black shirt, but his first touch was impossibly gentle as he checked her bruised cheek.
“Can you stand?”
She tried to answer. No sound came.
Adrian slid one arm beneath her knees and lifted her. Pain blanched his face.
“You’re bleeding,” she finally whispered.
His eyes closed briefly at the sound of her voice.
“So are you.”
“It’s only my lip.”
“Then we are both difficult patients.”
A paramedic tried to separate them for transport. Lily’s fingers locked around Adrian’s shirt before she realized what she was doing.
“Same ambulance,” Adrian said.
“Sir, your blood pressure—”
“Same ambulance.”
They secured Adrian to one stretcher and Lily to the bench beside it. He kept two fingers around her wrist during the drive, feeling her pulse as if each beat proved the rescue had worked.
He carried her through the warehouse while officers secured Cross’s men. Outside, the abandoned freight yard blazed with emergency lights.
A detective approached at a run. “Cross took the east tunnel.”
Adrian did not look back. “The tunnel opens at Pier Nine.”
“We know.” Gabriel’s mouth hardened. “You had it sealed before you entered.”
Cross emerged three minutes later expecting a getaway boat. Instead, floodlights came on around an empty pier. Police officers waited behind armored vehicles, and a Coast Guard cutter blocked the water.
He dropped his weapon only after a sniper’s laser settled over his heart.
Adrian watched the arrest from inside the ambulance with Lily wrapped in a thermal blanket against his chest.
He showed no satisfaction.
“Look at me,” he said when she began shaking.
Lily tried. The warehouse lights still flashed behind her eyes. She felt the gun against her temple and the ropes cutting her wrists.
“You came,” she breathed.
“I promised.”
“You gave away the harbor.”
“Concrete and contracts.” He touched his forehead to hers. “I would have burned every building I own.”

The paramedic demanded room to treat Adrian’s reopened incision. He allowed it only after another medic confirmed Lily had no serious injuries.
At the hospital, detectives recorded her statement. She could not speak Cross’s name without losing her voice, so Adrian sat outside the glass interview room where she could see him.
He never looked away.
Ethan was brought to the same building under federal guard. His attorney claimed he had acted under threat.
Gabriel placed printed bank transfers, encrypted messages, and airport reservations before the investigators.
“He accepted the first payment six weeks before Leo was pushed into the river,” Gabriel said. “He sold the hospital route and Lily’s photograph voluntarily.”
Ethan’s story collapsed before midnight.
Cross was charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, and organized-crime offenses. Bail was denied.
When a detective asked whether Adrian wanted to attend Cross’s interrogation, he refused.
“You don’t want to hear why he chose her?”
Adrian looked through the glass at Lily.
“I know why. He mistook love for weakness.”
None of it stopped Lily from trembling.
Elena called from the secure estate north of the city. Leo appeared on the screen in dinosaur pajamas, his face swollen from crying.
“Angel?”
Lily tried to smile. “I’m here.”
“Come home.”
The words broke what remained of her control. Adrian took the phone when her hands began to shake.
“We’re coming,” he told his son.
They returned to the penthouse before dawn. Doctors had wanted Adrian under observation, but he arranged a private medical team at home.
Lily entered the guest room and stopped when Adrian followed.
Her body recoiled before her mind understood why.
He froze.
“I’m sorry.”
He stepped back into the hallway.
“The door locks from inside. Elena is across the hall. I will stay here unless you ask me to leave.”
“You need rest.”
“So do you.”
He sat on the floor outside her room, one hand pressed over his bandage.
Lily closed the door.
For hours, she lay awake listening to the quiet beyond it. Adrian never tried the handle. He never ordered her to open it. When a nightmare dragged her back to the warehouse, his voice came through the wood.
“You’re home, Lily. Cross cannot reach you.”
At sunrise, she opened the door.
Adrian was still there.
His head rested against the wall, his face gray with exhaustion. He woke instantly.
Lily knelt and held out her hand.
“You can come closer now.”
He moved slowly, giving her every chance to change her mind. When she leaned into him, Adrian folded both arms around her and held her as though strength could be made gentle by will alone.
The private elevator chimed.
Leo escaped Elena’s hand and raced down the hall.
He crashed into Lily’s arms, sobbing.
“Mom,” he cried. “You came back.”
Adrian lowered himself beside them despite the pain in his side. Leo reached for him too, pulling all three together on the hallway floor.
For once, no guard looked away. They had watched their employer surrender money, blood, and pride for the woman in his arms. Now they watched him close his eyes as his son gave her the one name no Moretti had dared speak again.
