"The Mafia King Chose His Son’s Angel" Chapter 10 — He Burned the Last Bridge to His Past
Chapter 10 — He Burned the Last Bridge to His Past
The evidence named Salvatore Rizzo, one of Adrian’s oldest captains.
Rizzo had served Adrian’s father. He had attended Sophia’s funeral, carried Leo’s small coffin-shaped flower arrangement into the church, and sworn to find the men responsible.
Bank records now showed he had sold her route for control of three waterfront unions.
Cross also supplied a recording made the night before Sophia’s death. Rizzo’s voice identified her car, driver, and departure time.
Adrian listened once, removed his headphones, and became violently ill.
“Do not let Lily hear this recording,” he told Gabriel. “She can know the truth without carrying his voice for the rest of her life.”
Adrian read the file alone in the study.
Lily found him there after midnight, sitting in darkness with an untouched gun on the desk.
He closed the folder before she could see the photographs.
“Cross told the truth?”
“Enough of it.”
She did not tell Adrian what to do. She sat beside him until the shaking in his hand stopped.
“If I kill him,” Adrian said, “no one will question it.”
“I know.”
“You’re not going to ask me not to?”
Lily rested her hand beside his, not over it. “I will not pretend I understand what Sophia’s death took from you.”
Her refusal to command him forced Adrian to hear his own choice.
That night, she woke from a dream in which Leo stood at the river while Adrian walked toward gunfire he could never leave behind.
“I’m afraid,” she admitted when Adrian came to her door.
“Of Rizzo?”
“Of Leo growing up believing love always ends in revenge. Of you winning every war and never coming home.”
She asked nothing more.
At dawn, Adrian summoned the remaining family leadership.
Rizzo expected an execution order. Instead, federal prosecutors entered through the rear doors with warrants.
Adrian placed ledgers, account books, and the names of every active criminal enterprise on the table.
“Effective today, Moretti Crown Holdings is severed from all undeclared operations,” he said. “Every legitimate employee keeps a job. Every illegal network is surrendered for prosecution or closure.”
The room erupted.
Senior men warned of strikes, frozen financing, and retaliation. Adrian offered lawful employees severance, counsel, and a route into the audited company. He offered criminals no immunity he had no legal right to give.
Gabriel signed as the first cooperating witness. Two younger captains followed.
“Your father built this family,” Rizzo said.
“My father built a cage and taught us to call it a kingdom.”
“You will lose half the docks.”
“I already gave away the harbor.”
“You will lose men who swore blood to you.”
Adrian thought of Lily opening her door at sunrise. Of Leo laughing over heart-shaped pancakes.
“Then they swore to the wrong thing.”
Rizzo escaped before agents reached his residence.
That evening, he appeared inside the Moretti family chapel while Adrian stood before Sophia’s memorial candle.

A gun clicked behind him.
“Withdraw the testimony,” Rizzo ordered. “Tell the prosecutors Cross fabricated everything.”
Adrian did not turn.
“You sold my wife’s life.”
“I protected the family’s power.”
“She was my family.”
Rizzo pressed the barrel between Adrian’s shoulders. “That girl has made you weak.”
Adrian looked at Sophia’s name carved into the wall.
“No. She reminded me what strength was for.”
The chapel doors opened.
Federal agents emerged from both side aisles. Gabriel stepped from the choir loft with his weapon trained on Rizzo.
Adrian had chosen the chapel because Rizzo would expect him to come alone. He had chosen federal custody because Lily was right: Leo could not inherit another private execution disguised as justice.
Rizzo dropped his gun.
By midnight, the old organization had fractured. Some men fled. Others surrendered. Moretti Crown lost contracts, voting partners, and nearly a third of its projected value.
Adrian sold a private jet, two vacant towers, and the family’s casino stake to protect employee payroll and pensions. He never touched the independent harbor trust.
“Leo may inherit less,” Gabriel warned.
“Leo will inherit a name he can say without lowering his voice.”
For forty-eight hours, Adrian slept in his office and signed statements until his injured hand cramped. Lily brought him food but did not ask what each confession would cost.
On the third morning, he found Leo asleep beneath the conference table with a crayon drawing clutched to his chest. It showed Adrian outside a black castle and Lily holding open the door of a smaller blue house.
Across the top, Leo had written: PAPA CAME HOME.
Adrian folded the picture and carried it inside his coat when he went to the chapel to meet Rizzo.
It rested over his heart throughout the confrontation—a child’s proof that walking away from violence was not surrender, but the only victory worth bringing home.
Adrian signed every disclosure.
When he returned to the penthouse, Lily waited in the foyer with Leo asleep against her shoulder.
Adrian removed an unregistered pistol from beneath his coat. He placed it in a locked case and handed it to the attorney waiting behind him.
“Add it to the surrender inventory.”
The attorney left with the case.
Lily searched Adrian’s face. “Is it over?”
“The arrests will take months. The company will be smaller. Some people will always hate my name.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Adrian touched Leo’s sleeping back.
“I chose the life where I come home to you.”
He led her through the terrace doors.
Hundreds of candles glowed around the winter garden. Leo’s paper stars hung from bare branches on silver threads.
Adrian did not kneel. Not yet.
He stood before Lily without an empire forcing her to stay, without an enemy outside the door, and without a debt between them.
“Do you want this family,” he asked, “when there is no danger forcing you to stay?”
He stepped back, leaving the path to the terrace door clear. Adrian had faced guns without shaking. Now he stood unarmed before the possibility that she might walk away.
