"The Girl Who Texted the Wrong Man" Chapter 4 The Man in the Hallway
Chapter 4
The Man in the Hallway
Matteo reached the landing as Derek struck the bedroom door a third time.
The frame gave way. The suitcase Emma had pushed against the other side scraped across the floor, and Derek shouldered through the opening with a broken bottle raised in one fist.
He never reached the closet.
“Derek.”
The name stopped him.
He turned slowly. He was taller than Matteo had expected, broad through the chest, with a thick neck and the loose, uncertain balance of a drunk. Blood streaked one sleeve of his gray sweatshirt. More had dried across his knuckles.
His eyes dropped to Matteo’s pistol.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Put down the bottle.”
Derek looked past him toward the stairs. He was calculating whether he could run, although the alcohol made his thoughts visible on his face.
“This is my house.”
“No. It isn’t.”
“Sarah’s my girlfriend. We had an argument. That’s none of your business.”
Behind the closet door, something shifted.
Derek heard it too. His gaze snapped toward the sound.
Matteo stepped between him and the closet.
“Look at me.”
The quiet order carried more force than a shout. Derek obeyed before anger overcame instinct.
“You’re trespassing,” he said. “Get out before I call the cops.”
“They’re already coming.”
Fear flashed through Derek’s face.
There it was.
Not concern for Sarah. Not shock at the possibility that she might be dying downstairs. Fear of consequences.
“You called them?” Derek demanded.
“An ambulance too.”
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Put down the bottle, and you may live long enough to explain it.”
Derek stared at him properly then—the tailored coat, the steady weapon, the complete absence of panic. Recognition did not come, but uncertainty did. Matteo was not a frightened neighbor who could be chased away.
Derek lowered the bottle an inch.
“The kid’s been out of control since her father died,” he said. “Sarah asked me to help discipline her.”
“Discipline.” Matteo glanced at the splintered door. “Is that what you call hunting an eight-year-old through her home?”
“She stole Sarah’s phone. She lies. She talks back. She—”
“Put it down.”
“I’m trying to tell you—”
“You have three seconds.”
Derek’s fingers flexed around the broken neck of the bottle.
“One.”
“You come into my house and threaten me?”
“Two.”
Derek moved.
He did not drop the bottle. He lunged, sweeping the jagged glass toward Matteo’s face.
Matteo shifted half a step. The glass passed his cheek. He trapped Derek’s wrist, drove it into the wall and struck the nerve above the elbow. Derek’s hand opened. The bottle hit the carpet.
Before Derek could recover, Matteo turned the arm behind his back and forced him face-first against the wall.
Derek roared and threw his weight backward.
Matteo drove a knee into the back of his leg. The larger man collapsed. Matteo took him to the floor with one hand controlling his wrist and the other at the base of his neck.

The pistol never fired.
It took less than four seconds.
“Get off me!” Derek thrashed beneath him. “You broke my arm!”
“No.” Matteo increased the pressure until Derek gasped. “But now you know how easily I could.”
The man went still.
Matteo kicked the broken bottle beyond reach and searched his waistband and pockets. No gun. A folding knife sat clipped inside one pocket. Matteo removed it and slid it down the hall.
Derek also carried Sarah’s house keys and a bank card with her name on it. Matteo placed both on the carpet where they could be photographed and recovered, but he kept Derek’s phone. Its lock screen showed nine missed calls from a contact saved only as *Lisa—Do Not Answer*.
“Your ex-wife?” Matteo asked.
“Give me my phone.”
“You can ask the police for it.”
The mention of police made Derek strain against the hold again. Matteo pinned him with less effort than it took to close a door.
“Careful,” he said. “Every choice you make now becomes part of what Emma remembers.”
Sirens rose and fell in the distance.
“You’re making a mistake,” Derek panted. “Sarah attacked me. She was drunk. Ask her when she wakes up.”
Matteo looked at the blood on his knuckles.
“Did she put her own blood there?”
“She scratched me. I pushed her away. She fell into the table.”
“And Emma?”
“She started screaming. I was trying to calm her down.”
Matteo’s gaze moved to the ruined bedroom door.
“Is that how you calm children?”
Derek’s answer came faster now, each excuse colliding with the last. Sarah had been drinking. Sarah was unstable after her husband’s death. Emma needed rules. He had paid bills. He had fixed things around the house. He had tried to be a father.
Not once did he ask whether Sarah was alive.
Matteo took Derek’s belt from his jeans and bound his wrists behind his back. The leather would not hold forever, but it did not need to.
“What are you doing?” Derek asked.
“Making sure you don’t reach her again.”
“Her? You mean Sarah?”
“Either of them.”
Matteo hauled him to his feet. Derek swayed, his face flushed with pain and humiliation.
The closet door remained closed.
Matteo kept his body between Derek and the bedroom as he spoke.
“Emma, my name is Matt. We’ve been texting.”
There was no answer.
“Your mother is alive. The ambulance is almost here. Derek cannot reach you now.”
Derek twisted in his grip. “Emma, don’t listen to him. You’re the one who caused—”
Matteo drove him against the opposite wall hard enough to cut off the sentence.
“Speak to her again,” Matteo murmured, “and the police will need a second ambulance.”
Derek believed him. His mouth closed.
Matteo looked back at the closet.
“You don’t have to come out. Not for me. Stay where you feel safe until you’re ready.”
The silence lasted so long that Matteo wondered if she had fainted.
Then the closet door opened less than an inch.
A pale face appeared in the darkness, one blue eye visible between hanging dresses. Matteo saw tangled blond hair, tear-wet skin and a trembling hand clutching Sarah’s phone.
Emma looked at Derek first.
Only after she saw his bound hands did she look at Matteo.
Her voice was scarcely louder than the rain against the window.
“Matt… is that you?”
