"The Woman in Black" Chapter 9

Ethan’s arrest played on every screen in the lobby.

News cameras captured the handcuffs, the stunned employees, and Richard standing near the elevators with the calm expression of a man watching a plan unfold exactly as intended.

Claire moved toward Ethan, but a detective blocked her.

“You can speak to him after processing.”

“He was arrested using fabricated evidence.”

“That will be for his attorney to argue.”

Ethan looked over the detective’s shoulder.

“Claire, protect the ledgers.”

Richard heard him.

His smile disappeared.

Officers escorted Ethan through the revolving doors. Outside, reporters surrounded the police vehicle before it could pull away.

Madison arrived less than five minutes later.

She wore dark glasses and no engagement ring.

Her timing was perfect.

“What happened?” she asked, even as cameras turned toward her.

A reporter held out a microphone.

“Ms. Hale, did you know Ethan Whitmore was under investigation?”

“Of course not.”

“Did he use your access to transfer foundation money?”

Madison removed her glasses. Her eyes were red, but Claire could see no signs that she had been crying.

“I trusted Ethan completely.”

“Are you saying he deceived you?”

“I’m saying the man I loved may not exist.”

Claire watched from inside the lobby as Madison pressed one hand against her heart.

“I stood beside Ethan because I believed the allegations against Claire Bennett were true,” Madison continued. “If I was manipulated into condemning an innocent woman, I will regret that for the rest of my life.”

The performance was breathtaking.

Madison had turned herself from accomplice into victim before Ethan reached the police station.

“Will the wedding continue?” another reporter asked.

Madison lowered her eyes.

“I cannot marry a man facing charges for stealing from vulnerable children.”

She removed the engagement ring from her purse and held it where every camera could see.

“As of this morning, our engagement is over.”

The questions erupted.

Madison retreated into a waiting car while her statement spread across every major network.

Claire looked toward Richard.

“You told her he would be arrested.”

“I did no such thing.”

“She arrived prepared to end the engagement.”

“Perhaps Madison finally understands what you refused to accept. Ethan cannot be saved from his own choices.”

“You signed the loan guarantees.”

Richard glanced at the leather case in Claire’s hand.

“You stole confidential documents from my home.”

“They prove you used Ethan’s identity.”

“They prove Ethan authorized reckless transactions while serving as chief executive.”

“Your initials are on them.”

“A chairman reviews thousands of documents.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You spent years building a case against your own son.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“I spent years keeping this family alive while Ethan confused entitlement with leadership.”

“So you’ll send him to prison?”

“If that protects thirty thousand employees and a company my father built from nothing, I will accept the cost.”

“He’s your son.”

“He is one man.”

Claire saw no doubt in his face.

Richard gestured toward an empty conference room.

“I have an offer.”

“I’m not interested.”

“Emily’s custody hearing began an hour ago.”

Claire stopped.

Richard entered the room and waited until she followed. He closed the door behind them.

“Mark Bennett will withdraw his petition,” he said. “The school district will reinstate your sister, and every reference to Bennett Family Holdings will disappear.”

“In exchange for what?”

“You will surrender the ledgers, destroy all recordings, and state that Ethan directed the transfers.”

“You want me to lie.”

“I want you to confirm what the evidence already shows.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Your sister may lose her son by lunch.”

Claire set the leather case on the table.

Richard watched it.

For a moment, hope entered his eyes.

Claire opened the case and removed a stack of blank paper.

Richard’s face hardened.

“The ledgers were never in here.”

“Where are they?”

“Somewhere you can’t reach.”

“You believe Noah Carter can protect them?”

“I believe you’re running out of people to threaten.”

Richard leaned across the table.

“Ethan abandoned you. He chose Madison. He allowed investigators to destroy your life. Why sacrifice your sister to save him?”

“I’m not saving Ethan.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“I’m refusing to become you.”

Claire walked out.

At The Ledger’s newsroom, Noah had covered an entire wall with copies of transfers, access logs, and Madison’s sworn statement.

The statement gave investigators a precise timeline.

According to Madison, Ethan had authorized the final transfer from his private office at 11:18 the previous night.

Noah circled the time.

“Where was Ethan at 11:18?”

“In Whitmore Tower before the board meeting.”

“Not according to the arrest record.”

He placed another document beside Madison’s statement.

Ethan had been detained in the lobby at 9:47. His watch, phone, wallet, and electronic key had been logged into police custody at 10:22.

At 11:18, he was inside an interview room under constant surveillance.

Claire read the transfer record again.

“Someone used his authorization after police took the key.”

“And Madison swore he completed it personally.”

“She couldn’t have known they would detain him early.”

Noah opened the building’s access history.

“Madison entered Whitmore Tower through the underground garage at 10:54.”

“She told reporters she was going home.”

“She stayed inside for thirty-seven minutes.”

Claire reached for her phone.

“We take this to the district attorney.”

“Not yet.”

“Ethan is sitting in a cell.”

“And if we give them one forged document, Madison will call it a system error. We need to show who used the key.”

A voice came from the newsroom entrance.

“I can do better than that.”

Daniel Reed stood beside the security desk.

His beard was gone, and he wore a dark suit that hung loosely from his thinner frame. Ashley stood beside him with two federal agents.

Claire crossed the room.

“You came back.”

“I spent eighteen months asking other people to carry the risk for me.”

Daniel looked toward his daughter.

“I won’t do it again.”

He removed a flash drive from inside his jacket.

The casing was identical to the one he had given Claire in Wyoming.

“This is the original.”

Claire stared at it.

“You gave me a decoy.”

“I knew someone was watching the ranch. Noah suspected the same thing before you arrived.”

Noah nodded.

“We needed whoever followed us to believe they had the only copy. After the attack, Madison confirmed the bait worked by arranging that meeting with you.”

Daniel placed the drive in Claire’s hand.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“I trusted your courage. I didn’t trust your phone, your car, or anyone connected to the Whitmores.”

The federal agents remained near the entrance while Noah inserted the drive into an isolated computer.

Encrypted folders appeared on the screen.

Daniel entered a forty-character password.

The first folder contained complete transfer logs. The second held internal messages between Madison and Richard.

The third contained audio recordings.

Daniel selected a file dated six months earlier.

Madison’s voice filled the newsroom.

“Once Ethan is charged, the spousal authority clause becomes active.”

A man answered.

Adrian Cross.

“And the board will recognize your proxy?”

“They won’t have a choice. We close the sale, move the money offshore, and leave the debt with Ethan.”

“What about Richard?”

“He thinks I’m preserving the company.”

“And Claire Bennett?”

“She’ll be blamed for the foundation money. Ethan will be blamed for the hotel debt.”

Adrian laughed.

“You’ll be a very wealthy widow without having to wait for your husband to die.”

“I won’t be his wife long enough to get used to the name.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Noah copied the files for the federal agents.

“This proves Madison planned to frame him.”

“It also proves Ethan couldn’t have authorized the latest transfer,” Claire said.

By late afternoon, the district attorney suspended Ethan’s arraignment while investigators reviewed the new evidence.

Claire waited outside the interview rooms with Victoria and Noah.

A detective finally emerged.

“We’re preparing Mr. Whitmore’s release. He may remain a material witness, but the charges filed this morning will not proceed.”

Claire exhaled.

Ethan was coming out.

Before the door opened, Daniel caught her arm.

“There’s something else on the drive.”

“What?”

“The recordings mention someone Adrian calls the Chairman.”

“Richard.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Richard is the chairman of Whitmore Hotels. Adrian never refers to him that way.”

“Then who is it?”

Daniel looked through the glass wall toward the emergency board meeting upstairs.

“Richard isn’t the most powerful person in this plan. The person controlling Madison has been sitting on the Whitmore board the entire time.”
