"The Woman in Black" Chapter 10

The red carpet returned to the Whitmore Grand six days later.

This time, it was not there for a gala.

Whitmore Hotels had called an emergency shareholder meeting after lenders threatened to seize four properties and federal investigators froze the sale to Cross Atlantic Capital.

Every major network sent a camera crew.

Madison arrived first.

She stepped from a black sedan wearing another red gown, dark glasses, and the diamond bracelet containing the foundation’s missing security key.

Her attorney walked beside her.

Reporters surged forward.

“Madison, did you authorize the Cross Atlantic sale?”

“Did you know Ethan’s signature was forged?”

“Are you cooperating with federal investigators?”

Madison stopped beneath the hotel lights.

“For two years, I was manipulated by the Whitmore family,” she said. “I believed Richard and Ethan were honorable men. I now understand they used me to hide crimes that began long before I entered their lives.”

“Did you frame Claire Bennett?”

“Claire and I were both victims.”

A reporter shouted from the back.

“Why is your signature on the sale contract?”

“I signed documents presented to me by Richard Whitmore. I had no idea what they contained.”

Madison removed her glasses.

“I’m here today because powerful families should not be allowed to sacrifice women to protect their name.”

Several reporters began transmitting the statement live.

Madison turned toward the hotel entrance.

Then she saw Claire.

Claire stepped onto the red carpet wearing the same black gown she had worn at the foundation gala.

She had once considered burning it.

Instead, she had put it back on because there was nothing shameful about surviving what other people had done to her.

Noah walked several steps behind her. Daniel and Ashley followed with two federal agents.

The questions shifted immediately.

“Claire, has your name been cleared?”

“Are you testifying against Ethan?”

“Did Madison know the transfers were fraudulent?”

Claire did not answer.

She walked past Madison and entered the hotel.

The ballroom had been transformed into a temporary shareholder hall. A long table stood on the stage beneath three enormous screens.

Richard sat at the center.

Ethan occupied the chair to his right.

Thomas Kincaid, vice chairman of Whitmore Hotels, sat on his left.

Kincaid had served on the board for twenty-seven years. He had been Richard’s college roommate, Ethan’s godfather, and the man who delivered the eulogy at Eleanor Whitmore’s funeral.

He was also the Chairman named in Adrian Cross’s recordings.

Claire took a seat beside Victoria.

Madison entered moments later and sat with her attorney near the front.

Richard struck the table with a wooden gavel.

“This meeting will come to order.”

Noah’s livestream was already broadcasting from the rear of the ballroom.

Richard glanced toward the cameras.

“This is a private shareholder meeting.”

Victoria stood.

“Thirty-two percent of voting shareholders authorized public access. Under the company’s bylaws, the broadcast may continue.”

Kincaid leaned toward Richard.

“Let her speak.”

Richard looked at him.

For the first time, Claire saw fear in Richard Whitmore’s face.

Claire walked to the microphone.

“Eighteen months ago, I was accused of stealing eighteen million dollars from the Whitmore Children’s Foundation.”

The first screen displayed the original transfer logs.

“My electronic signature appeared on every authorization. But the key required to create those signatures was removed from an offline safe during the foundation’s winter benefit.”

Security footage showed Madison entering the restricted records room.

She emerged seven minutes later with one hand inside her purse.

The image changed to a magnified photograph of her bracelet.

“The key was hidden inside jewelry commissioned under Madison Hale’s name.”

Madison rose.

“That proves nothing. Claire had access to the same room.”

Claire displayed another record.

“My access had been suspended forty-three minutes before Madison entered.”

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

The next screen showed Claire’s driver’s license beside the fraudulent identification used to open the hidden account.

“The account connected to my Social Security number was opened using an identification card that listed the wrong eye color and an address linked to Whitmore security.”

Richard looked toward his attorneys.

Claire continued.

“When I found the first missing payments, Richard Whitmore was already using foundation money to cover losses at several hotels.”

The handwritten ledgers from the Greenwich estate appeared onscreen.

Richard stood.

“Those documents were stolen from a private residence.”

“They were written in your hand,” Claire replied.

“You cannot establish their authenticity.”

Daniel rose from his seat.

“I can.”

All eyes turned toward him.

Richard’s face lost its color.

Daniel approached the microphone.

“I audited the transactions. Richard ordered me to alter the foundation’s financial statements, then threatened my daughter when I refused.”

“That is a lie,” Richard said.

Daniel nodded toward Noah.

The ballroom speakers activated.

Richard’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Change the classification before the quarterly review. If anyone asks, Bennett approved it.”

Daniel’s voice followed.

“She didn’t.”

“Then make the records say she did.”

The recording ended.

Richard gripped the table.

Kincaid quietly moved his chair farther away from him.

Claire faced the shareholders.

“Richard stole the first eight million dollars. Madison discovered the theft and offered to conceal it. Together, they transferred another eighteen million and placed my name on every record.”

Madison’s attorney whispered urgently to her.

She ignored him.

“Richard controlled the foundation,” Madison said. “He threatened me too.”

“You negotiated payment,” Claire replied.

“I was trapped.”

“You demanded access to Ethan’s executive credentials and support from the board.”

“I did what Richard ordered.”

Claire displayed the Cross Atlantic sale agreement.

“Did Richard order you to sell the company’s most valuable hotels to Adrian Cross?”

Madison looked toward Kincaid.

It was only a glance.

But every camera captured it.

Claire changed the screen.

Internal messages showed Kincaid sending confidential property valuations to Adrian. Bank records connected his family trust to three offshore companies scheduled to receive money after the sale.

Kincaid stood.

“These records are fabricated.”

Noah played Adrian’s recorded voice.

“The Chairman wants the New York and Maui properties closed before the indictment.”

Madison answered.

“Thomas will have the proxy votes.”

Kincaid headed toward the side exit.

Federal agents blocked the door.

Claire looked at Richard.

“You knew Madison was setting up Ethan.”

Richard remained silent.

“You let it continue because Kincaid had proof that you took the first eight million.”

Kincaid laughed from across the room.

“Tell them, Richard. Tell them how quickly you offered your son when you realized someone had to go to prison.”

Richard stared at Ethan.

“I was protecting the company.”

“You were protecting yourself,” Ethan said.

“I built everything you inherited.”

“You used my name to destroy it.”

Madison moved toward the aisle.

“Richard designed the transfers. Richard chose Claire. Richard forged the documents.”

Daniel reached the microphone again.

“There’s one more recording.”

Madison stopped.

Her own voice filled the ballroom.

“If you testify, Ashley disappears. If Claire keeps digging, we take her sister’s child. I don’t care which one of them breaks first.”

Daniel had recorded the threat during a call made days before he vanished.

The room erupted.

Madison’s attorney grabbed her arm.

She pulled away and rushed toward Claire.

“You think this makes you innocent?”

Claire did not move.

Madison’s composure finally broke.

“You signed the accounts. You ignored your husband until he came to me. You made it easy for everyone to believe you were guilty.”

Ethan stood.

“No. I made it easy.”

Madison turned toward him.

He walked to the microphone.

“I betrayed my wife before anyone forged her name.”

The ballroom became silent.

“I had an affair with Madison while I was married to Claire. When Claire discovered the missing funds, I chose my reputation over her truth.”

Richard hissed his name.

Ethan continued.

“I saw evidence designed to incriminate her because I wanted a reason not to face what I had done. My arrogance left her alone while this family took her career, her marriage, and her name.”

Claire looked at him.

His confession could not restore what she had lost.

But he was finally telling the truth without asking what it would cost him.

Federal agents approached Madison.

One removed the bracelet from her wrist and sealed it inside an evidence bag. Another placed her hands behind her back.

Madison looked at Claire as the handcuffs closed.

“You did all of this because you want him back.”

Claire stepped closer.

“No. I came back to reclaim the name you took from me.”

Madison was escorted through the ballroom while cameras followed.

Kincaid left in handcuffs behind her. Richard remained at the table, abandoned by the directors who had once obeyed every command.

Outside, shareholders and reporters crowded the red carpet.

Claire walked toward the waiting car with Noah and Emily.

Ethan followed her.

“Claire.”

She stopped beneath the same lights where Madison had tried to humiliate her.

Ethan faced her in front of dozens of cameras.

“If Madison had never come between us, would there still be a chance for us to start over?”
