"Under His Ledger" Chapter 1 — The Asset
The first man Nico saw inside the Russo estate was bleeding onto his mother’s Persian rug.
The second was pointing a gun at his chest.
Nico stopped beneath the arched doorway, one hand still holding the strap of his motorcycle helmet. His charcoal suit jacket hung over his shoulder. The tie he had worn for Columbia’s moot court final was loose around his neck, and the top two buttons of his white shirt were open.
He looked at the gun.
Then he looked at the blood soaking into the rug.
“That stain is never coming out.”
The armed man’s expression did not change.
Behind him, the Russo family’s formal living room had been transformed into a surrender chamber. Three guards were on their knees beside the fireplace. Two more lay facedown with their hands bound.
Nico’s father sat rigidly on the antique sofa, one sleeve torn and his lower lip split.
Nobody appeared happy to see Nico.
That was hardly new.
“Nicolò,” Salvatore Russo said. “Leave.”
Nico slowly pushed a fresh piece of gum against the inside of his cheek.
“Great advice. You should’ve given it before someone redecorated with assault rifles.”
The gunman stepped closer.
“Put down the helmet.”
“No.”
His father’s face tightened. “For once in your life, do exactly as you’re told.”
A low voice came from the far end of the room.
“Let him keep it.”
Nico’s attention shifted.
A man sat in the high-backed chair that had belonged to three generations of Russo patriarchs.
Julian Vance did not look like someone who had just taken control of an enemy estate. There was no blood on his black suit. No dust on his polished shoes. His dark hair remained perfectly combed back, and his silver cuff links were aligned with almost insulting precision.
He held no visible weapon.
He did not need one.
Six armed men stood between him and the door.
Nico had seen Julian’s photograph hundreds of times. Financial magazines called him the disciplined visionary behind Vance Capital. Gossip columns called him Manhattan’s most eligible billionaire. Federal investigators, according to rumors, called him many things they had never managed to prove.
None of the photographs captured his stillness.
Julian watched the room as if every breath in it belonged to him.
His gray-blue eyes settled on Nico.
“Come inside.”
Nico leaned against the doorframe instead.
“You break into my family’s house and start giving me instructions?”
“I didn’t break in.”
Nico glanced at the shattered window beside the staircase.
“Of course not. You probably have people for that.”
One of Julian’s men moved toward him.
Julian raised two fingers.
The man stopped immediately.
Nico noticed that. He noticed everything.
The formation around the room was too disciplined for a revenge raid. The men had secured the stairway, the service entrance, and both interior halls. One carried a compact signal jammer clipped to his belt.

They had not come to slaughter the Russos.
They had come to find something.
Or someone.
Nico blew a pale pink bubble.
It burst sharply in the silent room.
His father closed his eyes.
Julian’s gaze dropped briefly to Nico’s mouth before returning to his eyes.
“You were difficult to locate.”
“That sounds like a personal failure.”
“You left campus through a maintenance exit.”
“The front steps were crowded.”
“You switched motorcycles twice.”
“New York traffic.”
“You removed the tracking device from the second motorcycle and attached it to a sanitation truck headed to Queens.”
Nico smiled.
“Recycling is a civic responsibility.”
Something flickered in Julian’s expression. Not amusement exactly. Julian Vance probably had his amusement professionally suppressed.
He stood.
The room seemed smaller when he did.
He was taller than Nico had expected, broad through the shoulders without the swollen build of a man who trained only to be admired. Everything about him was controlled—the straightening of his jacket, the measured steps, the attention he gave to the space between them.
Nico remained against the doorway.
Julian stopped three feet away.
“Where is the ledger?”
There it was.
No greeting. No threat. No attempt to pretend this was about the feud between their families.
Nico tilted his head.
“What ledger?”
Julian’s gaze hardened.
Salvatore surged to his feet.
“I told you, Vance. We never had it.”
A guard forced him back onto the sofa.
Nico’s jaw tightened, but he did not look away from Julian.
Julian did not look at Salvatore at all.
“Five years ago,” he said, “an encrypted ledger disappeared from one of my family’s private networks. Three weeks ago, someone accessed it using a Russo relay.”
“Sounds embarrassing.”
“That access originated from a terminal registered to Columbia University.”
Nico clicked his tongue.
“You should report them to campus IT.”
Julian stepped closer.
Only a few inches separated them now.
Nico could smell clean cedar, expensive wool, and the faint metallic trace of gun smoke that did not belong on a man who looked this immaculate.
“You used seven relays,” Julian continued. “Three false identities. A dormant server in Montreal. You routed the final packet through a church security system in Brooklyn.”
“The Lord works in mysterious ways.”
“Not mysterious enough.”
Nico’s smile did not move, but his heartbeat did.
Julian knew too much.
Not everything. If he knew everything, Nico would already be dead.
But enough.
Across the room, Victor Russo stood beside the fireplace, one hand pressed to a bruised cheek. Nico’s uncle had not spoken since Nico arrived.
That worried him more than the guns.
Victor was never silent unless silence benefited him.
Julian extended one hand.
“Your phone.”
“At least buy me dinner first.”
“Your phone, Nico.”
The sound of his name in Julian’s voice landed differently than it should have. Quiet. Certain. Almost intimate.
Nico hated that he noticed.
He removed his phone and placed it in Julian’s palm.

Julian passed it to one of his men without looking away.
“Unlock it.”
“No.”
“Nico,” his father warned.
Nico ignored him.
Julian studied his face. “You understand what is happening here.”
“Your men ruined a historic window, tied up half my family, and failed to offer me a drink.”
“The Russo organization collapsed forty-eight hours ago. Your father’s accounts are frozen. His remaining soldiers are either gone or negotiating their surrender.”
Salvatore’s face turned gray.
Nico looked at him then.
That part was real. His father could disguise fear from outsiders, but never from his own blood.
Julian continued.
“Someone sold the family’s dark-web infrastructure before the collapse. During that transfer, my ledger resurfaced.”
Nico shifted the helmet in his hand.
“Maybe you should ask the buyer.”
“I did.”
“And?”
“He died before he could answer.”
The words were flat. They carried no pride and no regret.
Julian was not performing cruelty.
That made him more dangerous.
Nico’s eyes moved again to Victor.
His uncle stared back with open hatred.
The truth settled into place.
Victor had sold the network. He had discovered what Nico had taken, and when Julian came looking, he had offered the weakest Russo as payment.
The unwanted son.
The private embarrassment.
The body the family could lose without changing the seating chart.
Nico pushed away from the doorframe.
“Let me guess. My loving relatives said I stole it.”
No one answered.
He laughed once.
It came out sharper than he intended.
Salvatore leaned forward. “Nicolò, listen to me. Whatever you did, tell Mr. Vance where it is.”
Mr. Vance.
Forty men had probably died in the last two days, and his father was still clinging to formalities.
“What exactly did he promise you?” Nico asked. “That you get to keep the house? One account? Maybe Uncle Victor gets to keep pretending he’s loyal?”
Victor’s hand dropped from his bruised face.
“You always were an ungrateful little bastard.”
“There he is.”
Victor took a step forward.
Two of Julian’s men raised their weapons.
Nico did not flinch.
Julian, however, turned his head.
“Sit down, Victor.”
The quiet order stopped him more effectively than a shout.
Victor sat.
Nico looked back at Julian.
“Impressive. We’ve been trying to train him for years.”
“The ledger.”
“You’re obsessed.”
“It contains records that belong to me.”
“That’s not what a ledger is. It contains records of what you did.”
For the first time, the room changed.
Small movements. A glance between guards. A tightening around Julian’s eyes.
Nico had struck something.
Good.
Julian stepped into the remaining space between them.
He was close enough now that Nico had to tip his chin upward, but Nico refused to step back.
“Where is it?” Julian asked.
“Somewhere your money can’t reach.”
“My money reaches everywhere.”
“Then why are you standing in front of me?”
Julian’s hand came up.
His fingers closed around Nico’s jaw—not hard enough to injure, but firm enough to hold his face still.

Half the room stopped breathing.
Heat flashed through Nico so quickly that anger arrived a moment late.
He caught Julian’s wrist.
The guards raised their guns.
“Put those down,” Julian said.
Nobody moved.
“I said put them down.”
The weapons lowered.
Nico’s fingers remained locked around Julian’s wrist.
Julian looked at the contact, then back at him.
No fear. No embarrassment.
Interest.
That was worse.
“You walked into a room full of armed men,” Julian said, “and decided arrogance would protect you.”
“No. The password protects me.”
Julian went completely still.
Behind them, Salvatore whispered, “Nico.”
Nico smiled into Julian’s grip.
“Looking for your ledger?”
The pressure of Julian’s fingers changed.
Not stronger.
More attentive.
“Give me the password.”
“No.”
“You are in no position to refuse.”
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Nico released Julian’s wrist and reached into his shirt.
Three guns rose instantly.
He pulled out a thin black cord. A small metal key hung from it, no larger than a subway token.
Julian examined it.
“The ledger is divided across nine encrypted servers,” Nico said. “Each server requires a rotating key. The rotation is tied to my biometrics and a dead-man protocol.”
“You’re bluffing.”
“Kill me, and the ledger deletes itself.”
Julian’s eyes searched his face.
“Break my hands, drug me, force the wrong scan, or keep me unconscious too long, and it deletes itself,” Nico continued. “There are no backups. No recovery phrase. No helpful customer-service number.”
One of Julian’s men stepped forward. “Boss, he could be lying.”
“He isn’t,” Julian said.
The certainty in his answer disturbed Nico more than disbelief would have.
Julian released his jaw.
A faint warmth remained where his fingers had been.
“What do you want?” Julian asked.
Nico glanced toward his father.
Salvatore could not meet his eyes.
Victor could.
The hatred in his uncle’s expression was now edged with fear.
Nico finally understood why.
The ledger did not merely belong to Julian Vance.
It contained something the Russos were desperate to bury.
“I want to know why my family is more afraid of that ledger than you are.”
Victor stood so quickly that the side table overturned.
“Shoot him!”
The room exploded into motion.
Marcus Kane—the broad-shouldered man nearest Julian—struck Victor across the chest and drove him against the wall. Two guards restrained him before he could reach inside his jacket.
Nico did not move.
Neither did Julian.
They stood facing each other while Victor cursed and struggled behind them.
Now Julian understood too.
This was bigger than stolen money.
Nico slipped the metal key back beneath his shirt.
“If you want the ledger,” he said, “you keep me alive. If you want the truth inside it, you keep me interested.”
Julian looked at him for a long moment.
Then his gaze moved over Nico’s loosened tie, the jacket on his shoulder, and the helmet still hanging from his hand.
He turned to Marcus.
“Prepare the car.”
Salvatore rose again. “Where are you taking my son?”
Julian did not acknowledge him.
Nico folded his arms.
“You’re assuming I’m going anywhere.”
Julian faced him once more.
There was no smile on his mouth, but something colder had awakened in his eyes.
He caught Nico beneath the chin again, forcing neither submission nor distance—only making the threat unmistakably personal.
“Take him,” Julian said. “He’s my newest asset.”
The armed men closed in.
Nico looked up at the most dangerous man in New York and smiled.
“Then you just bought a war.”
