"Under His Ledger" Chapter 6 — The Wrong Vance

“It isn’t my name.”

Julian’s answer came before the ballroom finished erupting.

Nico kept the gun pointed at his chest.

Security guards moved through the guests, pushing them toward the exits. White roses overturned. Champagne spread across linen tablecloths.

Julian remained in front of Nico.

Unarmed.

Still.

“J. Vance,” Nico said. “Would you like me to spell it?”

“My legal name is Julian Alexander Vance. That authorization identity belonged to Jonathan Edward Vance.”

Nico’s finger rested against the trigger guard.

“Your father.”

“Yes.”

“The dead man whose credentials watched you sleep.”

“Yes.”

“And you expect me to believe that is a coincidence?”

“No.”

Julian turned toward Marcus.

“Clear the ballroom. Lock the elevators. No one leaves with a device.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Julian, there are senators in this room.”

“They can wait.”

Adrian put down his champagne.

“This is madness. He has a gun pointed at you.”

“He has a reason.”

Nico’s gaze snapped toward him.

Adrian raised both hands.

Julian looked back at Nico.

“The payment was authorized ten years ago. Where was I that night?”

“How would I know?”

“Marcus.”

Marcus removed his phone but kept his movements slow.

“Ten years ago, Mr. Vance spent seventy-two hours in federal custody after refusing to cooperate with a grand jury investigation.”

Nico’s arm did not lower.

“You can manufacture a record.”

“Not one held by the Southern District of New York,” Sofia said.

She emerged from behind a pillar with her badge in one hand.

Nico stared at her.

She had attended the gala under protest and spent most of the evening avoiding the Vance family.

Now she stood between two guards, looking furious and afraid.

“I checked the record after you showed me the transaction date,” she said. “Julian was processed at eight fourteen that morning. He remained in custody until three days after Mom died.”

“Someone could have used his authorization.”

“It was not mine,” Julian said. “It was my father’s.”

Nico’s eyes burned.

“You inherited everything.”

“I inherited the company. Not every identity attached to its old network.”

“But you knew the ledger contained his transactions.”

“I suspected it.”

“You brought armed men into my home because you suspected?”

“I brought armed men because someone using my father’s accounts has killed six people in five years.”

The statement silenced him.

Julian took one step closer.

Guns rose behind Nico.

Julian did not look at them.

“Lower your weapon,” he said.

“You don’t give me orders.”

“No. But if you intend to shoot me, you should know what you’re destroying.”

Nico’s jaw tightened.

Julian took another step.

The muzzle nearly touched his tuxedo.

“I have spent five years looking for the person using Jonathan Vance’s identity,” Julian said. “That person arranged my father’s last meeting. Two hours later, his car exploded beneath the West Side Highway.”

Nico searched his face.

“You think the same person killed both of them.”

“I think your mother discovered the theft. I think my father tried to stop it. I think someone removed them before either could speak.”

Victor had disappeared during the panic.

Adrian remained beside Elena.

Both watched too carefully.

Nico lowered the gun.

Julian took it from him, engaged the safety, and handed it to Marcus.

He did not touch Nico’s skin.

The restraint hurt in a way Nico had not expected.

“You believed I sold you,” Nico said.

“I considered the evidence.”

“For how long?”

“Fourteen seconds.”

“That’s romantic.”

“We have been married less than a day.”

“Divorce lawyers work quickly.”

Julian’s mouth almost changed.

Almost.

Then Nico looked at the tablet again.

“If Jonathan died five years ago, how did his credentials access your cameras last month?”

“Someone preserved the authentication key.”

“And the biometric component?”

Elena went pale.

Nico noticed.

“So you do know something.”

Every eye turned toward her.

Elena straightened.

“Jonathan created an emergency succession system. If he died, three trustees could restore his authorization identity for thirty days.”

“Who were the trustees?” Julian asked.

“Your mother, me, and the chief financial officer.”

“Adrian’s predecessor?”

“His father.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“My father died seven years ago.”

“So did Julian’s mother,” Nico said.

Elena said nothing.

Nico stepped closer to her.

“That leaves you.”

“I never restored the identity.”

“Can you prove it?”

“No.”

Julian’s gaze became glacial.

“You knew the identity could be restored and never told me.”

“Jonathan made me swear—”

“My father is dead.”

“So were people who tried to expose these accounts.”

Elena’s composure cracked.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From whom?”

She looked around the ruined ballroom.

“From the person who killed your father.”

A phone began vibrating on the floor.

Not one of the guests’ phones.

Victor’s.

He must have dropped it while leaving.

Nico picked it up.

The screen displayed an incoming encrypted call from an unnamed contact. Beneath it was a notification for a scheduled transfer.

$500,000.

Recipient identification concealed.

Execution time: midnight.

Nico connected the phone to the tablet.

Julian moved beside him.

Together they opened the authentication layer.

The transfer authorization carried Jonathan Vance’s restored identity.

Nico followed the linked instruction file.

A photograph appeared.

His own face.

Taken that morning outside the Marriage Bureau.

Beneath it was a single command.

TERMINATE BEFORE SECOND DECRYPTION.

Sofia inhaled sharply.

Julian took the tablet.

The restraint vanished from his expression.

“Marcus.”

“I’m on it.”

“Find Victor.”

“He left through the service elevator six minutes ago.”

“Shut down every bridge, tunnel, airport, and private runway he could reach.”

Marcus began issuing orders.

Nico looked at the payment again.

“They’re not running.”

Julian faced him.

“What?”

“The transfer is scheduled for midnight. If Victor planned to disappear, he would have taken the money already.”

“He may not control the account.”

“Exactly.”

Nico enlarged the metadata.

The transaction had been created from inside Vance Capital headquarters.

Not the foundation.

Not the gala hotel.

The corporate tower.

Someone was currently inside Julian’s most secure building, using his dead father’s identity to purchase Nico’s death.

Julian read the location.

His face became calm again.

That calm was now more frightening than rage.

“Lock down Vance Tower.”

Adrian moved toward the exit.

“I’ll contact internal security.”

Julian caught his arm.

“You’re staying here.”

Adrian looked at Julian’s hand.

“You think I did this?”

“I think no one leaves until I know who did.”

Nico watched Adrian’s reaction.

Surprise.

Offense.

And beneath both, something smaller.

Calculation.

Nico glanced down at the transfer window.

The authorization was not merely scheduled.

It contained a live tracking packet attached to the photograph.

He opened it.

A red indicator flashed.

The tracker was active.

Nico checked his jacket, shoes, ring, and phone.

Nothing.

Then he looked at Julian.

“Your cuff link.”

Julian removed the silver cuff link from his left sleeve.

A tiny signal pulsed inside it.

Marcus swore.

The order was marked with Nico’s photograph.

But the tracker had been placed on Julian.

Nico looked toward the ballroom exits.

“The payment isn’t for my death.”

The first window shattered.

Julian threw Nico to the floor as a bullet tore through the space where his head had been.
