"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 3 — The Photograph in Her Room
What Her Husband Found
Elena locked the bedroom door before Declan could stop her.
Gabe remained inside with her. Declan stood in the hallway, separated from them by one inch of painted wood and three years of lies.
“Open the door,” he said.
Elena slid Mateo’s photograph into the pocket of her uniform.
“Tell me where you saw my husband.”
“Not through a door.”
“Then get comfortable.”
Gabe lowered his weapon. “Mrs. Reyes, if he wanted to hurt you, that lock would not matter.”
“I know. I’m making a point.”
To her surprise, Gabe’s mouth twitched.
Declan’s voice came through the door. “Ruth’s office. Five minutes. You can bring Mercer.”
His footsteps receded.
Elena turned to Gabe. “Does he always confuse issuing an order with having a conversation?”
“Usually people obey before he needs the conversation.”
“That sounds lonely.”
Gabe studied her for a moment. “It is.”
Ruth’s office contained household schedules, vendor contracts, spare keys, and one floral armchair that had survived three generations of Cross renovations.
Declan waited beside the desk. He had removed his cuff links and rolled his sleeves once, as if preparing to do honest work.
Elena stayed near the door.
“Start with the truth,” she said.
“Mateo called because he had traced missing freight payments through six shell companies. He believed the money funded people inside the Lakefront Circle.”
“You mean organized crime.”
Declan did not deny it.
“Cross Freight operates legitimate shipping terminals,” he said. “The Circle existed before I was born. When I took control, I ended narcotics trafficking and civilian extortion.”
“How moral of you.”
“I am not asking you to approve.”
“Good.” Elena folded her arms. “Because I don’t.”
Gabe closed the office door.
Declan continued. “Mateo believed someone was using my routes to move stolen medical supplies and weapons. He would not send the files electronically. We agreed to meet at an all-night diner near Cicero Avenue.”
“Did you go?”
“Yes.”
“Did he?”
Declan’s jaw tightened. “Not while I was there.”
Again, a careful answer.
Elena stepped closer. “His car hit a concrete barrier at 12:26. Police called it an accident. You knew he was carrying evidence, and you never contacted me.”
“Contacting you would have told the killer Mateo had spoken to me.”
“So you watched me bury him without an explanation.”
“I kept you alive.”
“You don’t get credit for dangers you never let me see.”
The words landed. Declan’s expression did not change, but his hands went still.
Ruth set a thick personnel folder on the desk.
“There is another truth,” she said.
Declan looked at her sharply.
Ruth ignored him. “Elena did not apply here through the ordinary agency list. Mrs. Margaret Cross left written instructions that if Gabriel Reyes’s daughter ever sought work, I was to hire her.”
Elena stared at her.
Margaret Cross had been Declan’s mother. She had died two years before Elena entered the estate.

“My father knew her?”
“He helped build this company,” Ruth said. “Before the Cross family erased his name.”
Declan closed the folder. “We do not know that.”
“Your mother did.”
Elena felt the room tilt.
Her father had owned a small trucking business on the South Side. He died when she was twelve, supposedly after falling asleep at the wheel.
Her mother had spent the next twenty years refusing to discuss him.
“What was his connection to Cross Freight?” Elena asked.
Ruth opened her desk drawer and removed an old brass key.
“There is a sealed records room behind the west library. Margaret told me never to open it unless both a Cross and a Reyes were present.”
Declan took the key. “You waited until now to mention this?”
“Your mother made me promise.”
“My mother is dead.”
“A promise is not.”
They crossed the darkened estate with Gabe behind them. Police technicians still worked in the ballroom, but the west library had been left untouched.
Ruth pressed a hidden release inside a carved bookcase. A narrow steel door appeared behind the shelves.
The brass key turned.
Cold, stale air escaped.
The room held banker’s boxes, old freight ledgers, and a wooden desk covered by a sheet. On the wall hung a photograph of four people breaking ground beside the Chicago River.
Elena recognized Margaret Cross and a younger version of Victor.
Beside them stood Declan’s father.
The fourth man was Gabriel Reyes.
He looked younger than Elena remembered, with his sleeves rolled up and one boot resting on a ceremonial shovel. His hand lay on Declan’s father’s shoulder. They did not look like employer and driver, as her mother had always described them.
They looked like partners.
Elena touched her father’s face through the dusty glass.
Below the photograph, a brass plaque read:
CROSS-REYES TRANSPORT, 1989.
“My father’s name was on the company,” she whispered.
Declan stood beside her. “It appears it was.”
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
She believed him. The realization was inconvenient and immediate.
Gabe opened the first ledger. Several pages had been cut out with a blade.
Ruth searched a desk drawer and found a small digital recorder wrapped in a handkerchief.
Elena recognized it.
Mateo used to carry it during audits.
Her fingers shook as she pressed play.
Static filled the room, followed by Mateo’s voice.
“Elena, if you hear this, I failed to get home.”
Her knees nearly gave way.
Declan’s hand moved toward her elbow, then stopped before touching her.
Mateo continued.
“The Cross accounts are not the beginning. They are the cover. Your father never sold his share. Someone forged the transfer after he died.”
Paper rustled on the recording.
“I found the original trust reference, but not the signed document. The person who killed Gabriel still lives inside the Cross house.”
The recording ended with a knock and Mateo’s startled breath.
Then silence.
Gabe replayed the final seconds.
Three knocks. A pause. Two more.
Declan looked toward the door.
“That was my mother’s private signal,” he said.
Ruth went pale. “Only family knew it.”
Glass shattered behind Elena.
Declan hit her at the waist and drove her to the floor as a bullet tore through the window.
The shot buried itself in the wall where Elena’s head had been.
Gabe killed the lights and drew his weapon.
Declan covered Elena with his body. His breath struck her cheek, controlled but hard.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Stay down.”
“Get off me.”
“The shooter is still outside.”
Another bullet struck the desk.
Wood exploded over them.
Elena saw blood on Declan’s shoulder.
“You’re hit.”
“A splinter.”
She pressed her hand over the cut anyway.
Gabe crawled toward the broken window and spoke into his radio. Security lights flooded the lawn.
An engine roared beyond the trees.
The shooter was gone.
Declan looked down at Elena, still shielding her.
For one suspended second, neither of them moved.
His face was inches from hers. His weight surrounded her without crushing her. Beneath her palm, his heartbeat was faster than she expected.
“You saved me downstairs,” he said.
His voice was rougher now.
“Consider us even.”
Elena looked at the bullet hole above them.
“We are nowhere near even.”
Declan rose and pulled her up with him.
He turned to Gabe.
“Prepare the River North penthouse. Mrs. Reyes moves tonight.”
Elena released his hand.
“Mrs. Reyes decides where Mrs. Reyes moves.”
Declan faced her across the ruined room.
“Then decide whether you want to argue here while the shooter reloads.”
