"The Maid the Mafia King Locked Inside His Mansion" Chapter 4 — The Protection Contract

At two in the morning, Elena stood inside Declan’s River North penthouse and crossed out half his protection contract with a red pen.

Declan watched from the opposite side of a twelve-foot dining table.

“You removed the location tracker.”

“Correct.”

“The secure driver.”

“I changed ‘at all times’ to ‘when mutually agreed.’”

“And the restriction on outside communication.”

“I am not entering witness protection run by a criminal.”

Gabe coughed into his fist.

Declan gave him a look.

The penthouse occupied the top floor of Cross Tower, forty stories above the Chicago River. Windows wrapped around the living room, but armored panels could seal them in seconds. Two private elevators opened only with biometric access.

It was a beautiful prison with excellent views.

Elena added another clause.

“What now?” Declan asked.

“No entering my bedroom without permission unless there is an active emergency.”

“Define active.”

“Fire, gunfire, or a medical crisis. Your curiosity does not qualify.”

His gaze lifted from the contract to her face.

“You assume I am curious.”

“You had my employment file before I finished being searched.”

“That was operational.”

“I am sure you call all your bad habits operational.”

Elena noticed a dark stain spreading through the shoulder of his shirt.

“Sit still.”

“I am sitting.”

“More cooperatively.”

She retrieved the first-aid kit from the kitchen while Gabe inspected the elevators. When she returned, Declan had opened two more security reports instead of removing his shirt.

“The fabric is stuck to the cut,” she said. “I need access to it.”

His eyes met hers.

“Is that operational?”

“Do you want an infection?”

He unbuttoned only the collar and pulled the shirt from his shoulder. The injury was shallow but filled with tiny wood fragments.

Elena worked beneath the bright dining light, cleaning each splinter from his skin. Declan did not react until antiseptic reached the deepest cut.

“You can threaten armed men without blinking,” she said, “but disinfectant offends you?”

“Armed men are predictable.”

“And I’m not?”

“Not remotely.”

Her fingers paused against his warm shoulder.

The silence changed.

Elena taped gauze over the wound and stepped back before either of them could mistake proximity for trust.

“The bandage comes off tomorrow.”

“Will you be here to remove it?”

“That depends on the contract.”

Declan pulled his shirt into place. “Then we should finish negotiating.”

Gabe turned away, but not before Elena saw him smile.

Declan pulled out the chair across from her and sat.

The gesture changed the negotiation. He was no longer towering over the table. He was meeting her at eye level.

“What do you want?” he asked.

“My phone returned. Independent legal counsel. Access to every record involving Mateo or my father. Ruth stays at the Lake Forest estate with security she trusts.”

“Agreed.”

“I am not finished.”

“Of course not.”

“I continue to receive my salary until this ends. Hazard pay begins tonight.”

Declan almost smiled. “How much?”

“Double.”

“Done.”

Elena frowned. “I should have asked for triple.”

“You can try at the next shooting.”

The line was so dry she laughed before she could stop herself.

Declan looked startled.

The sound disappeared, but the moment did not.

Gabe placed Elena’s phone on the table. “Hospital called. Marcus Hale is awake, but only family and law enforcement can see him.”

“He has no family in Illinois,” Declan said.

“He listed you as emergency contact.”

Elena capped the red pen. “Then we are going to the hospital.”

“You are staying here.”

She uncapped it again and drew a line through the signature block.

Declan stared at the red slash.

“You negotiate like a hostage taker.”

“I learned from my employer.”

Twenty minutes later, they rode in the back of an armored SUV toward Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Chicago slid past in wet ribbons of light. Elena sat beside Declan, close enough to feel the heat from his shoulder but not close enough to touch.

Her phone vibrated with twelve missed calls from her mother. Elena sent a brief message saying she was safe and working overnight. She hated the lie, but the truth would place another name inside Victor’s reach.

Declan noticed the message without reading it.

“Your mother lives in Pilsen.”

Elena’s head snapped toward him. “That information is not permission to watch her.”

“Gabe already placed an unmarked car outside her building.”

“Remove it.”

“No.”

“Then your contract is dead.”

Declan considered her, then called Gabe in the front seat. “Replace our people with an off-duty patrol detail hired through the neighborhood association. No Cross vehicles.”

It was not surrender, but it was the first time he changed a security decision because she demanded it.

“Why did you hire me?” she asked.

“Ruth hired you.”

“You approved the file.”

He looked out the window. “I knew your father’s name. I did not know the company had once carried it.”

“What did you know?”

“Gabriel Reyes died after accusing Victor of falsifying invoices. My father called it grief-driven paranoia.”

“And you believed him?”

“I was seventeen.”

That answer carried no defense, only fact.

Elena studied his profile. The city’s most feared man had once been a boy taught which adult deserved belief.

“When Mateo called, why didn’t you bring him to the FBI?”

“Because the task force had a leak. Two informants had already disappeared.”

“So you handled it yourself.”

“I tried.”

The words left an opening he quickly closed.

At the hospital, Gabe cleared the elevator while Declan used the emergency-contact authorization to enter Marcus’s room. Elena wore borrowed navy scrubs to avoid attracting attention.

Marcus looked smaller beneath the blankets. A ventilator had been removed, but oxygen ran beneath his nose.

His eyes opened when Declan approached.

“You look terrible,” Declan said.

Marcus managed a weak smile. “Your parties are getting worse.”

Elena checked the monitor from a respectful distance.

Marcus saw her and stiffened.

“The maid.”

Declan stepped between them. “She saved your life.”

“I know.” Marcus swallowed painfully. “That is why she needs to leave.”

Elena moved closer. “Did you see who handled the drinks?”

Marcus looked toward the open door.

Gabe closed it.

“Victor spoke to Shaw near the bar,” Marcus whispered. “I heard your uncle say the dosage had to be exact.”

Declan’s face turned to stone.

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“I thought they were discussing your medication. Then Shaw changed the glasses.”

Elena’s pulse quickened. “Changed which glasses?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Yours.”

Silence filled the room.

Elena shook her head. “I did not have a drink.”

“You were supposed to. Victor told the photographer to bring the staff heroes into the toast. He named you specifically.”

Declan turned toward Elena.

Marcus struggled for breath. “The whiskey was never meant for Declan. Shaw panicked when the tray positions changed.”

“Why would Victor poison me at Declan’s fundraiser?” Elena asked.

Marcus’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because he found out who your father was.”

The door opened.

A hospital security officer entered with a tablet in his hand.

“Mr. Cross, we reviewed the pharmacy pickup connected to the substance found in Mr. Hale’s blood. The order came through a private medical account.”

“Whose?” Gabe asked.

The officer turned the tablet around.

Elena’s name appeared above a scanned signature.

ELENA REYES.

Below it was security footage of a woman in a dark housekeeper’s uniform collecting the package.

The woman lifted her face toward the camera.

She looked enough like Elena to fool a stranger.

But Elena recognized her immediately.

“That’s my sister,” she whispered.

Declan’s hand closed around the back of the chair.

“You told me you had no living sister.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“I don’t.”

Her voice broke on the next words.

“I buried Lucia eleven years ago.”
