"The Baker Who Said No to the Mafia Boss" Chapter 5 — The Trap Behind the Counter
Chapter 5 — The Trap Behind the Counter
Roman wanted the name of every temporary employee who had entered the bakery in the previous month.
Clare gave him none of them.
“You think I planted those pills?” he asked.
“I think you solve problems by applying pressure until something breaks.”
“Sometimes that is efficient.”
“Not when the broken thing is my case.”
They stood in the dark bakery, separated from the sealed storeroom by yellow tape. Without the ovens running, the room felt wrong. Too cold. Too quiet.
Clare placed both palms on the counter.
“Give me twenty-four hours.”
“For what?”
“To find the person who did this without giving Grant photographs of your men dragging someone into an alley.”
“My men do not drag people into alleys.”
She waited.
“Anymore,” Roman added.
“Twenty-four hours.”
He looked toward the storeroom, then back at her.
“All right.”
The word mattered more than Clare wanted it to.
She started with the flour.
Every bag delivered to Bennett’s Bakery carried a supplier code. The stack hiding the pills had arrived Monday, but one bag on the bottom bore a lot number from six weeks earlier.
Someone had removed it from storage, opened the stack, and rebuilt it badly.
The electronic back-door lock recorded an entry at 2:13 a.m. on Wednesday using a temporary maintenance code.
Only three people had received that code: Clare, the building superintendent, and a cleaning company hired after Sophia’s charity breakfast.
The company claimed its worker had finished at midnight.
The florist next door had a camera pointed toward the shared alley.
At 2:09 a.m., it captured a thin man in a cleaning uniform entering with a backpack. At 2:21, he left without it.
Naomi identified him as Darren Cole, a subcontractor with two prior fraud charges and a current address in Dorchester.
Roman reached for his phone.
Clare covered it with her hand.
“You promised.”
His eyes dropped to where her fingers rested across his knuckles.
Clare withdrew them.
“I remember,” he said.
Finding Darren was not enough. A defense attorney could say he planted the bag for his own reasons. They needed the person who paid him.
So Clare lied.
She called the cleaning company from the bakery office and said the police had missed a second camera concealed inside the storeroom. She made sure the receptionist understood that investigators would collect it the next morning.
Then Naomi arranged for a detective to monitor any lawful contact Darren made with the people already named in the investigation.
For six hours, nothing happened.
Lily sat at the worktable doing algebra. Roman repaired a loose cabinet hinge that did not need repairing. Clare refreshed her email until the screen blurred.
At nine forty-three that night, Naomi’s phone rang.
She listened, asked two questions, and smiled without warmth.
“Darren called a private investigator named Paul Venn. He demanded the rest of his money before the second video reached police.”

“Who is Venn?” Clare asked.
Naomi turned her laptop around.
Paul Venn’s agency had billed Beacon Public Strategies three times during the previous month.
The detective obtained a warrant for Darren’s messages. One read: Place package behind old stock. Photo when done. No fingerprints.
Another told him when the anonymous complaint would be filed.
By noon the next day, Darren was in custody. The tablets tested as prescription sedatives, not flour-contaminating narcotics, but possession and evidence tampering were enough to collapse the accusation against Clare.
Darren initially claimed he had entered to steal cash. The lie lasted until detectives showed him the messages and the photograph of the rebuilt flour stack.
He admitted receiving five hundred dollars up front and the promise of three thousand more. He refused to name whoever designed the plan, but a warrant for Paul Venn’s billing records was already moving through court.
The health department reopened Bennett’s Bakery.
Customers returned before Clare finished turning the sign.
Some came because they missed the bread. Others came because Boston loved a public comeback almost as much as it loved a public ruin.
By three, the line reached the sidewalk.
Roman stood near the door holding a tray while Clare filled boxes.
“Table four needs coffee,” she said.
“You know my coffee is terrible.”
“Consequences build character.”
He leaned closer. “You caught a man with a phone call and a fictional camera.”
“You sound surprised.”
“Impressed.”
The word moved through her more warmly than it should have.
Lily appeared with frosting on her cheek. “Are you two flirting?”
“No,” Clare said.
“Badly,” Roman said at the same time.
Lily rolled her eyes and carried a plate away.
Clare looked at Roman. “You waited.”
“You asked me to.”
“That has never stopped you before.”
“I am capable of improvement.”
“We have insufficient evidence.”
For a moment the noise of the bakery seemed to recede. Roman looked at her as if he intended to say something honest and dangerous.
The bell above the door interrupted him.
Grant entered alone.
The room quieted table by table.
He placed an envelope on the counter.
“Congratulations,” he said. “You proved someone planted the pills.”
“Someone your public-relations firm paid,” Clare replied.
“A vendor paid a private investigator. That is several steps away from me.”
“Convenient steps.”
Grant ignored Roman completely.
“You have become the center of a dispute that has nothing to do with you, Ms. Bennett. Your business has been vandalized, investigated, and publicly humiliated.”
“I noticed.”
“It can stop.”
He pushed the envelope toward her.
Inside was a prepared statement. Clare would announce that grief had blurred her judgment, that Lily’s attachment to the bakery had become unhealthy, and that she was ending all contact until the court ruled.
In exchange, Grant would withdraw his complaints against the bakery and publicly correct the paid-girlfriend claim.
Clare read it twice.
Then she slid it into the paper bag around a fresh loaf of sourdough.
Grant frowned. “What are you doing?”
“You came all this way. You should not leave empty-handed.”
She handed him the loaf.
“My answer is no.”
