"He Needed a Fake Wife—His Son Chose the Maid" Chapter 10 — The Family He Couldn’t Buy

Ava wore Sebastian’s microphone to the gala.

She also wore Marcus’s.

One transmitted to Sebastian. The other transmitted to federal agents in a command truck beneath the pier.

The Children’s Harbor Gala glittered inside a converted terminal overlooking New York Harbor. Donors drank champagne beneath suspended sailboats while news cameras waited for Dominic’s first public statement.

Sebastian had built Claire’s charity into the stage for destroying her family.

Dominic stood beside Ava in a black tuxedo.

“If he tells you to accuse me, do it,” he murmured.

“You hate surrendering control.”

“I hate the idea of losing you more.”

Noah watched from the armored command vehicle with Rachel and two agents. He had promised to remain there.

That promise lasted eleven minutes.

Sebastian’s voice entered Ava’s hidden earpiece. “Go to the podium.”

She obeyed.

The room quieted.

“My name is Ava Morales Vale,” she began. “Six weeks ago, I worked in Dominic Vale’s home as a maid.”

Camera shutters erupted.

“Tell them he paid you,” Sebastian ordered.

“Dominic offered me a contract marriage and one million dollars.”

Shock moved through the crowd.

Dominic did not react.

“Tell them he killed Claire.”

Ava looked directly at him.

“I believed Dominic’s world destroyed Claire Vale and my sister. I was partly right.”

Sebastian’s breathing sharpened in her ear.

“But the man who ordered those deaths is listening to me now.”

Security screens around the terminal changed. Marcus replaced the charity film with Claire’s recording, Dr. Bell’s confession, and bank transfers bearing Sebastian’s authorization.

Guests turned toward the exits.

Federal agents sealed them.

Sebastian laughed in Ava’s ear. “You think documents beat blood?”

The catering truck engine started below.

Marcus called, “Truck moving west.”

Dominic started toward the stairs.

Ava caught his hand. “Trust the plan.”

Agents blocked the truck at the service gate. They opened it.

Empty.

The photograph had been staged earlier.

Then Noah’s voice sounded over Ava’s earpiece.

“Ava?”

She turned.

He stood on the upper catwalk, a gun pressed to his shoulder. Sebastian held Evelyn with his other arm.

Noah had seen a message on Rachel’s tablet claiming Ava needed him backstage. Sebastian had cloned another authorized account.

“Let them go,” Dominic said.

Sebastian smiled down at him. “Put your weapon on the floor.”

Dominic was unarmed.

“I came to a family event.”

“You came to bury me.”

“You buried yourself when you killed Claire.”

Sebastian’s face twisted. “Claire was going to give twenty-six percent of my company to a child. Your father planned to remove me. I built Vale Maritime while both of them played family.”

Every word transmitted through both microphones.

Ava moved toward the stairs.

The gun shifted to Noah’s neck.

“One more step.”

She stopped.

Evelyn drove her heel down onto Sebastian’s foot. Noah ducked.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Dominic ran up the stairs with no weapon and no cover.

Sebastian recovered and aimed at Noah.

Dominic stepped between them.

The second shot struck his shoulder and spun him against the railing.

Ava reached the catwalk as Marcus tackled Sebastian. Agents secured the gun. Evelyn pulled Noah behind a steel column.

Dominic slid to the floor.

Noah dropped beside him.

“Dad. Dad, look at me.”

Dominic’s hand found his son’s face.

“I have you.”

Noah shook his head fiercely. “No. We have you.”

Ava pressed both hands over the wound while sirens approached.

Sebastian, pinned beneath Marcus, stared at the cameras still broadcasting.

“You have nothing without me,” he shouted.

Dominic looked at Ava and Noah.

For the first time, he answered without anger.

“I have everything.”

Paramedics carried Dominic down the catwalk while Noah refused to release his hand. The bullet had passed through muscle, but blood soaked the white shirt beneath his jacket.

“Stay with me,” Noah ordered.

Dominic managed a pale smile. “Bossy.”

“Genetic.”

Ava rode in the ambulance. At the hospital, agents separated witnesses and preserved both audio feeds. Sebastian’s confession had been broadcast not only to the task force but also to every news camera Marcus had routed through the terminal system.

There would be no quiet family cleanup.

Evelyn gave her statement with Noah beside her. She explained how Sebastian had used photographs of Dominic’s crimes, genuine grief, and forged medical records to convince her that taking Noah was Claire’s final wish.

“I should have spoken to you,” she told him.

“You should have asked me,” Noah replied.

“Will you forgive me?”

“Not today.”

Evelyn nodded through tears. “That is fair.”

Ava recognized the answer as one Noah had learned from her. Forgiveness could not be another demand adults placed on a child.

Marcus arrived with the sailboat box. Agents had found the missing silver recorder in Sebastian’s coat. Its deleted files were recoverable.

One recording captured Sebastian threatening Claire in her hospital room. Another preserved Claire telling Sofia where to hide the key. The final file contained Sofia’s voice after Claire died.

“If anyone finds this,” Sofia said, “tell Ava I was trying to come home.”

Ava sat in the hospital corridor and wept for the sister she had imagined running away.

Noah sat beside her without speaking. Evelyn joined them. Three people linked by women Sebastian had tried to erase held the box between them.

When the surgeon finally appeared, he said Dominic would recover.

Noah’s knees gave way with relief. Ava caught him.

Hours later, Dominic woke and found them both asleep beside his bed, Noah curled against Ava’s shoulder.

He did not wake them.

For once, the man who had controlled an empire remained still and let his family be the thing protecting him.

The following morning, investigators allowed Ava five minutes with Sebastian through interview-room glass. He expected anger. She brought Sofia’s recovered recording.

“You could have had money without killing them,” she said.

“Money was never the point. Respect was.”

“People feared you.”

“Fear lasts longer.”

Ava looked at the aging man who had mistaken obedience for love until his own family helped arrest him.

“No. Evidence lasts longer.”

She left him with the sound of Claire naming him and Sofia promising to come home.

In Dominic’s room, Noah had taped the family rules above the medical chart. A nurse added a sixth: patients do not threaten the kitchen over coffee.

Dominic signed that one under protest.

By afternoon, news outlets had replayed Sebastian’s confession nationwide. Vale Maritime shares fell, then stabilized after the independent board announced a forensic audit. Dominic refused a statement portraying him as a hero.

“I was shot protecting my son,” he told Rachel. “That does not erase what I built.”

Months earlier, he would have controlled the story until no uncomfortable fact remained. Now he allowed the record to contain both guilt and change.

Noah added two points to his score.

“Only two?” Dominic asked.

“Getting shot was dramatic. Telling the truth counts more.”

Dominic accepted the judgment without negotiation.

He was learning.

Rachel arrived with the first court order freezing every account tied to Children’s Harbor. Marcus confirmed Evelyn’s forged signature came from Sebastian’s device. The attempted trust transfer was voided, and independent custody of Noah’s shares began immediately. Dominic listened without triumph. Winning now meant building a structure his son would never need to fear.
