"My Son Was Feeding a Girl Behind the Wall" Chapter 5 — The Letter Was a Lie
Ryan had trusted Dr. Daniel Carter with his son's life.
That was the thought he couldn't get out of his head as he watched the security footage for the sixth time.
Margaret Hayes carried Sophie toward the house.
Carter followed with a medical bag.
Neither looked surprised.
Neither looked afraid.
They moved like people following a plan.
Michael paused the video.
"We need to give this to the detectives."
"We will."
Ryan stared at Carter's frozen face.
"But first I want to know what he was doing in my house at two in the morning."
Michael folded his arms.
"Let the police ask him."
"They already tried."
Ryan held up his phone.
"Carter isn't answering."
That morning, detectives went to Carter's medical office in White Plains.
It was closed.
His receptionist claimed he had canceled every appointment for the week because of a "family emergency."
No one could reach him.
Ryan wasn't surprised.
By noon, he was back at the Whitmore estate.
The kitchen looked like a crime scene.
Yellow tape crossed the doorway.
Pieces of broken drywall still lay near the hidden room.
Ryan stood several feet away.
He could still see Sophie reaching through the vent.
"Dad?"
He closed his eyes.
Seven years.
Someone had stolen seven years from him.
And the worst part was that he still didn't know why.
Michael entered carrying a file box.
"I found something."
Ryan looked over.
"What?"
"Emily's letter."
Ryan went still.
"What letter?"
"The one she sent you seven years ago."
Ryan stared at him.
"I threw it away."
"You thought you did."
Michael placed the box on the table.
"Your father kept almost everything from your old apartment when you moved after he died. Some boxes went into company storage."
Ryan approached slowly.
Michael pulled out a cream envelope.
Ryan recognized it instantly.
His name was written across the front.
Ryan Whitmore.
His chest tightened.
For seven years, he had remembered every sentence inside.
Ryan,
I'm sorry I couldn't tell you this in person.
I've met someone else.
What we had was real, but it isn't the life I want anymore.
Please don't look for me.
I need you to let me go.
Emily.
Ryan had called her seventeen times that night.
Her phone had been disconnected by morning.
He had gone to her apartment.
Empty.
Her landlord said she'd moved.
Then nothing.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"Because I had someone examine it."
Michael handed him a preliminary report.
"The signature appears consistent with Emily's handwriting."
Ryan frowned.
"Then what?"
"The body isn't."
Ryan looked up.
Michael continued.
"The signature and the text were written with different pens. Different pressure patterns too."
Ryan stared at the letter.
"You're saying she signed a blank sheet?"
"Or someone transferred her signature. We need a full forensic examination."
Ryan felt the room narrowing around him.
"But there's more."
Michael placed another document beside it.
"This paper came from a stationery set sold by a small shop in Scarsdale."
"So?"
"The purchase was made with Margaret Hayes's credit card."
Ryan didn't speak.
Michael didn't need to explain.
The letter that had ended Ryan's relationship with Emily might never have come from Emily at all.
His phone rang.
It was the police.
Margaret had been brought in for questioning.
She claimed she had brought Sophie to the estate because Claire had asked her to.
Claire said the opposite.
Both women were accusing each other.
Ryan almost laughed.
His entire family had become a collection of competing lies.
He drove to the station.
Claire requested to see him privately.
When Ryan entered the room, a cardboard box sat on the table.
"What is that?"
"Something I should've given you seven years ago."
Ryan didn't sit.
Claire opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
A scarf.
Several handwritten notes.
And a small ultrasound photograph.
Ryan's breath caught.
He picked it up.
A date was printed in the corner.
Seven years earlier.
"What is this?"
"Emily's."
Ryan looked at Claire.
"Why do you have it?"
"Because she left the box for you."
The words hit him like a physical blow.
"When?"
"The day she came to the house."
"You said she met your mother."
"She did."
Claire wiped tears from her cheeks.
"I found this afterward."
"And you kept it?"
"I was going to tell you."
"When, Claire? After our wedding? After Leo was born? On our twentieth anniversary?"
"I was afraid."
Ryan slammed the ultrasound onto the table.
"Of what?"
"Of losing you!"
The answer echoed through the room.
Claire looked ashamed the instant she said it.
Ryan stared at her.
"So you let me believe she abandoned me."
"My mother told me Emily had taken money and left."
"And you believed her?"
"I wanted to."
That was the first completely honest thing Claire had said.
Ryan's anger became strangely quiet.
"You wanted Emily to be the kind of woman who would abandon me because that made it easier for you to take her place."
Claire sobbed.
"I loved you."
"You loved having me."
She looked down.
Ryan reached into the box.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope.
His name was written across it.
This handwriting was different from the breakup letter.
Ryan recognized it immediately.
Emily.
His fingers shook as he opened it.
Inside was only one page.
Ryan,
If they tell you I left because I stopped loving you, don't believe them.
I'm pregnant.
The baby is yours.
I'm trying to get back to you.
Emily.
Ryan couldn't breathe.
Claire was crying openly now.
"I never saw this."
He looked at her.
"What?"
"I swear."
"You kept the box for seven years."
"I never opened the sealed envelope."
Ryan didn't know whether to believe her.
He folded the letter carefully.
Then Claire said something that made him stop.
"Ryan."
He turned.
"Emily isn't dead."
He stared at her.
"You already said you saw her."
"There's something else you need to know."
Claire's hands tightened around each other.
"Three months ago, I was coming home from Leo's school. She was standing across the street from our house."
"What did she say?"
"She asked about you."
Ryan's heart pounded.
"And Sophie?"
"She asked if you had children."
Ryan swallowed.
"What did you tell her?"
Claire looked at him.
"I told her about Leo."
"And then?"
"She started crying."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"Where did she go?"
"I don't know."
"Think."
"I tried to follow her."
"And?"
Claire's face changed.
"Someone else was following her too."
Ryan stared at her.
"Who?"
Claire whispered the answer.
"Dr. Carter."
