"The Binding They Tried to Bury" Chapter 3 — The Test at Precinct Nine
Chapter 3 — The Test at Precinct Nine
Three weeks later, Elias Hart was arrested in the lobby of his own company.
The detectives arrived at 8:12 on a Monday morning, just as Harborline’s project managers were gathering for the weekly resilience briefing. They wore plain clothes, held a warrant, and said the words “commercial espionage” loudly enough for every phone in the lobby to rise.
Elias did not resist.
That was the first thing Julian had taught him about public disaster: never give an audience the image it came to collect.
“Counsel is on the way,” Elias told Detective Nunez as she read him his rights. “My assistant will provide whatever access your warrant actually covers.”
Nunez’s expression did not change. “The warrant covers your offices, your devices, and the off-site server credentials tied to your executive account.”
“Then you should know those credentials were copied three weeks ago.”
“You can explain that downtown.”
As they led him past the reception desk, Mira caught his eye. Her face was pale, but she understood instructions without hearing them. Elias touched two fingers to the inside of his wrist—the signal they had used for years when a meeting was compromised.
External counsel. Calder & Moss. The camera card.
Do not wait for him.
Precinct Nine smelled of wet wool, old coffee, and disinfectant. The holding room was too cold. Elias answered only what his lawyer advised, watched a detective place printed server logs on the table, and recognized the forgery within seconds.
The timestamps were wrong. Not impossible. Just careless in the way only someone who did not understand Harborline’s internal systems could be careless.
At eleven, a nurse asked him to follow her for routine intake screening.
“I’m not being booked overnight,” Elias said.
“Department policy for anyone held longer than four hours, Mr. Hart.” She checked the tablet. “You may request medical privacy.”
“I do.”
He signed the form with a hand that felt detached from the rest of him.
The exam should have been simple. Blood pressure. Blood draw. A scan for suppressant interactions, because every detainee with a registered secondary status was entitled to emergency care.
Elias had no registered secondary status.
The nurse ran the panel twice.
Then she left the room and returned with the precinct physician, an older Beta woman named Dr. Sato who closed the door before she spoke.
“Mr. Hart,” she said gently, “your hormone profile indicates an active pregnancy.”
For a moment, the words refused to attach to meaning.
“No,” Elias said.
Dr. Sato did not flinch. “The initial estimate is approximately three weeks.”
The fluorescent lights hummed above him.
Three weeks.
The Mercer Grand. The mechanical room. The gauze at his neck. Rowan’s face when he looked at his hands.
Elias gripped the edge of the exam table until his knuckles ached. “This record is sealed.”
“Yes.”
“No notification to family.”

“None without your consent or a medical emergency.”
“No notification to any biological—” His voice stopped.
Dr. Sato waited.
“To anyone,” he finished.
She nodded and made a note. “There are legal advocates who can assist with privacy orders. Given the circumstances, I strongly recommend—”
A raised voice cut through the hall outside.
Elias recognized Julian’s polished cadence before he heard the words.
“My nephew is under enormous strain. I only want to make sure he receives appropriate care.”
Cold anger cut through the shock.
“How does he know I’m here?” Elias asked.
Dr. Sato’s face tightened. “He should not know anything about this examination.”
Elias was already reaching for his shirt.
In the corridor, Julian stood beside a uniformed officer and a young reporter Elias recognized from the
Ledger
. The reporter’s phone was held low, camera lens angled toward the medical wing.
Elias stopped in the doorway.
“Get him out,” he said.
Julian turned, concern arranged perfectly across his features. “Elias. Thank God. I heard you’d been taken in.”
“You heard wrong things in the wrong building.”
The reporter lifted her phone.
Elias pointed directly at her. “If you record one second of a medical corridor, I will have your outlet in court before lunch.”
She lowered it, but not before he saw the notification flash across her screen:
HART OMEGA RUMOR? CONFIRM ASAP.
Julian’s eyes flicked to it too. Just once. Enough.
“You leaked this,” Elias said.
“I came because I care about you.”
“You came because you thought I would be too frightened to see you moving pieces.”
The officer stepped between them. “Mr. Ward, you need to leave.”
Julian’s smile thinned. “Of course. Elias, call me when you’re ready to stop treating help as an attack.”
He walked away without looking back.
At 12:37, Rowan Blackwood arrived at Precinct Nine.
Elias knew because the holding-room door opened and a lawyer he had never met stood in the doorway with a sealed envelope.
“Mr. Hart,” she said. “My name is Tessa Lane. I represent Rowan Blackwood in a limited evidentiary capacity.”
Elias laughed once. “That phrase should be illegal.”
“Mr. Blackwood has not requested to see you.”
That surprised him enough to remain silent.
“He has submitted his toxicology report from the Mercer Grand, the original photographs of the ventilation canister, and a sworn statement placing both of you on the locked service floor during the incident.” Tessa placed the envelope on the table. “He has also retained my firm to seek a protective order over your medical records, at his expense. You may decline representation.”
“Why?”
Tessa met his eyes. “Because he learned your test result from a detective who should not have disclosed it. He is furious. At the disclosure, at himself, and—if I may be candid—at every person who has treated your privacy as negotiable.”
Elias looked at the envelope but did not touch it.
“He knows,” he said.
“He knows you are an Omega.”
The room seemed to contract.
“Tell him he does not get to be sorry in my doorway.”
“I’ll tell him.”
“Tell him he does not get to decide what responsibility looks like for me.”
“I’ll tell him that too.”
Tessa paused. “There is one more thing. The city’s copy of the hotel footage was altered. Mr. Blackwood kept an original encrypted backup through his corporate security system. He is offering it to your forensic team, not to the police, if that is your preference.”
Elias finally took the envelope.
Inside was a drive, a chain-of-custody affidavit, and a handwritten note in Rowan’s severe, slanted handwriting.
You owe me nothing. Use this to protect yourself.
By late afternoon, Calder & Moss had forced the detectives to release Elias pending further review. The evidence against him had not disappeared, but neither had his counterclaim. In the back seat of Mira’s car, with the city blurred by rain outside, Elias plugged the drive into a secure laptop.
Mira sat beside him, silent until the video loaded.
The recovered footage showed the service corridor in clear black and white.
At 9:58 p.m., Miles Venn entered wearing a hotel technician’s jacket.
At 10:01, Julian Ward stepped out of the elevator.
Miles handed him a silver access card.
Julian turned it over once, smiled, and slipped it into his pocket.
Elias watched the image freeze on his uncle’s face.
Then he looked at Mira.
“Send this to Calder & Moss,” he said. “And tell them I’m done playing defense.”
