"Three Keys to the Same Room" Chapter 8: The Price of Belief
Chapter 8: The Price of Belief
The scholarship hearing was held in a room designed to make people feel smaller than the institution judging them.
It had a long oak table, framed portraits of former presidents, and windows that faced the immaculate Northbridge lawn. I sat at one end with a folder of evidence in front of me and an unopened bottle of water at my elbow.
Rowan and Miles waited outside. That had been my request.
Jace sat beside me as a witness. Priya joined by video. The student legal clinic had sent a third-year law student named Anika Patel, who had the soothing voice of somebody who could make a parking ticket sound negotiable.
Across from us sat Dean Armitage, the scholarship director, and a university counsel whose smile had not moved once since I entered.
"Mr. Cole," the director began, "we understand this has been an extraordinarily difficult situation."
"It has," I said.
"We also need to address the public allegations involving financial support from Mr. Hart."
I put both hands on the table. "I have never accepted money from Miles Hart outside our shared rent and normal roommate expenses, all of which I can document."
"We are not accusing you of misconduct."
"Then don’t ask the question like you are."
The room went quiet.
Anika’s pen stopped moving. Not because I had said something wrong. Because I had finally said it clearly.
I walked them through the timeline: the party drink, the clinic panel, the stolen photographs, the release of private scholarship information, the threats, the fake prototype, the guest-network logs, and the terrace recording.
Priya confirmed the original clips had been edited to imply facts that were never true. Jace testified that his old camera had been used without his understanding and that the metadata matched the Foundation event account. When the scholarship director asked whether I had encouraged the publicity by appearing on Student Media Live, I looked directly at her.
"I appeared because the harassment was already public. Silence would not have protected me."
She looked down.
Then Rowan’s plagiarism allegation entered the meeting like a second storm.
The university counsel placed a printout on the table. "Mr. Vale’s accessibility model contains concepts similar to a discontinued patent. Given his involvement with HavenLink—"
"Open the submission history," I said.
The counsel blinked. "Excuse me?"
"The patent was discontinued because it was never built. Rowan’s files include dates, sketches, and environmental testing from before that patent was purchased. The person who uploaded the accusation omitted the revision archive. It is in the folder marked R-Vale Timeline."
Jace passed the tablet across.
I had spent two days helping Rowan organize it, not because I could save him but because he had asked whether I would look. The difference mattered.
The director scrolled through the files. Her face changed as she reached the original dates.
"This will need independent review," she said.

"Everything does," I replied.
At noon, they recessed. Outside the hearing room, Rowan was leaning against the wall in a dark sweater, hands buried in his pockets. Miles stood a few feet away, tie loosened, staring at the tiled floor.
"How was it?" Rowan asked.
"Badly designed. Fluorescent lighting. Emotionally hostile."
His mouth almost smiled. "That wasn’t what I meant."
"I know."
Miles looked up. "Did they ask about me?"
"They asked about money. I answered about facts."
His jaw flexed. "I’m sorry you had to."
I stepped closer, stopping before I touched him. "You are allowed to be sorry. You are not allowed to turn that into a reason to disappear."
The words surprised him. They surprised me too.
"My father wants me to sign a statement," he said. "He says I should distance myself from HavenLink and from you until this is resolved."
"What do you want?"
For once, he did not answer immediately. "I want you safe."
"That’s not an answer."
Rowan’s eyes flicked from him to me, then away.
Miles let out a breath. "I want to stay. Even if it costs me everything he thinks I owe him."
"Then stay," I said. "But stay because you chose it. Not because you think suffering is proof of love."
His gaze held mine, blue and exhausted and honest.
Before I could answer, a student reporter rounded the corner with a phone raised at chest height. She slowed when she saw us, recognition flashing across her face.
"No," I said.
She stopped. "I wasn’t recording."
"Then put it away anyway."
Her cheeks colored. For a second I expected another argument, another person telling me that public meant available. Instead, she lowered the phone and nodded.
"I’m sorry," she said. "I didn’t think."
"That’s the problem," I replied, but my voice was not cruel. "Please do next time."
She left without taking a picture.
Miles watched her go. "You make it look easy."
"It isn’t easy. I just don’t want fear to be the only thing I’m good at anymore."
Rowan glanced at the hearing-room door. "Then we go back in and make them write that down."
The hearing resumed after lunch. By four, the scholarship committee had voted to suspend any review of my funding pending the conduct investigation. It was not a victory. It was not even a promise. But it meant I could register for next semester. It meant the rumor had not been allowed to become a verdict.
Outside, the first snow of the season started falling over campus.
Rowan walked beside me to the media lab. "You were terrifying in there," he said.
"Compliment?"
"Absolutely."
At the lab door, he stopped. His eyes went to the red mark that had faded but not disappeared from my neck.
"Can I?" he asked.
I knew what he meant before he raised his hand.
"Yes."
His knuckles brushed the edge of my collar, barely there. The gesture lasted no more than a second, but everything in me noticed it.
Then Jace burst through the stairwell door with his laptop open.
"Please tell me nobody is having a life-changing moment without me," he said. "Also, I found the employee number."
The approval for Sloane’s event-media access belonged to Caleb Wren, executive assistant to Miles’s father.
And Caleb had emailed Sloane after the terrace incident.
Not to help her.
To ask whether she had kept copies.

Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone. He just repeats his mistakes.” Camera flashes exploded. Furious, Madison ordered security to throw Claire out.
