"The Protocol That Knew Our Names" Chapter 6 — The Choice in the Glass Room
Chapter 6 — The Choice in the Glass Room
By sunrise, every local business channel had played Calder’s statement.
The video showed Rowan on the terrace, edited so Eli’s hand dragging him back was cut away. It showed Rowan in the hotel lobby. It showed a blurred image of Eli entering the archive floor beside him. Calder did not say the word lover, but he did not need to. He used phrases like compromised judgment and unstable attachment.
At eight, the board suspended Rowan from active duties.
At nine, two officers arrived at Eli’s repair shop with a warrant for the Sloane cassette and every device connected to the archive copy.
“They’re calling it evidence preservation,” Mara said from the doorway.
“They’re calling it theft,” Eli said. “Because that sounds less like Calder being terrified.”
The officers boxed up recorders, drives, and the old blue phone. Eli watched them carry out the tools he had used to rebuild broken sound for half the city. Rowan stood beside him, silent enough to worry him.
When the door closed, Rowan said, “I’m sorry.”
Eli rounded on him. “Don’t apologize like you arranged this.”
“My family arranged it.”
“Then help me beat them.”
That, at least, made Rowan look up.
Mara had saved one thing before the warrant arrived: a low-resolution duplicate of Sloane’s tape embedded in an old voicemail export. Eli spent the afternoon repairing the distortion with software and headphones at June’s apartment, while Rowan paced and attempted not to interfere.
At last, beneath the hiss, a tone sequence emerged. Eli recognized it from audio calibration work: a location handshake, not music.
“It’s a server address,” he said.
Mara checked it against old property files. “The original Halcyon facility. Closed twelve years ago. Northside medical district.”
The server opened with Rowan’s H-17 mark scanned against Eli’s bandaged finger. A black screen became a simple white page.
EXIT PARAMETERS:
No command may create consent.
Either subject may stop the process at any time by stating: Harbor.
Termination requires both original subjects to enter Observation Room One and make a shared choice without coercion.
Eli read it twice. “Harbor.”
Rowan closed his eyes. “That was our word.”
“You remember it.”
“I remember everything I wish I didn’t.”
Eli waited.
Rowan sat across from him on June’s battered sofa, hands clasped so tightly the knuckles had whitened. “I loved you then,” he said. “Not in a way I understood. Not in a way I could say. You were terrified, and I was terrified, and when you offered to take the surge for me, I thought I would spend the rest of my life owing you something I could never repay.”
Eli’s throat tightened.
“Afterward, you asked to forget,” Rowan continued. “Sloane said memory deletion might reduce the trauma. I agreed for you. I refused it for myself. I thought someone should remember what you gave up.”

“That wasn’t your decision alone.”
“No.” Rowan looked directly at him. “It was cowardice dressed up as protection.”
Eli wanted to argue. Instead, he reached across the space between them. “You can stop making it alone now.”
Rowan’s fingers met his. He did not squeeze. He simply held on.
The server map showed the observation room still had power. It also showed a new lock signal.
CALDER VALE: ACTIVE ADMINISTRATOR.
Mara cursed. “He’s already there.”
The map expanded under Eli’s fingers. Beneath the facility layout was a record of every command sent since midnight: access doors, camera routing, medical telemetry. Calder had not merely discovered the old system. He had been using it for weeks, quietly testing whether it would still respond to Rowan’s biometric data.
“He triggered the terrace episode,” Eli said.
Rowan went still.
“Not all of it,” Mara said. “The program amplifies existing feedback. But he knew exactly where to push.”
Eli felt a clean, bright rage replace the fear. The near-fall had not been fate, or a system malfunction, or some unavoidable residue of the past. It had been a man deciding their bodies were leverage.
A secure message arrived on Rowan’s phone.
Bring Eli Mercer to the facility by 7:00 p.m. Sign the consent waiver. Or I will initiate a full memory purge remotely.
Eli stared at the words until they steadied into something cold.
“We go,” he said.
“Absolutely not,” Rowan said.
“The system says both of us are needed to end it.”
“Calder wants you there because he can hurt you.”
“He can hurt me from anywhere. He has been.”
Mara put a hand on Eli’s shoulder. “If you walk into that facility, he will make it public. He wants proof Rowan cannot function without you.”
“Then we give him proof of something else.”
Eli opened the hidden upload panel in the server code. Mara watched him understand it and swore again, this time approvingly.
“You can route a broadcast,” she said.
“To every outlet you trust?”
“I trust three reporters and exactly no outlets.”
“Good. Send them the original files when I say.”
Mara nodded, already moving between encrypted windows. “I can send the archive and the internal command logs. But if he cuts the building network, the release dies with us.”
“It won’t,” Eli said. He pulled the old blue phone from the evidence inventory photograph Mara had taken before police loaded it away. “The phone synced to the protocol once. It may still be a physical relay.”
Rowan looked at him with equal parts alarm and reluctant admiration. “You figured that out from a distorted tone sequence?”
“I fix old things for a living.”
“You are not old.”
“Focus, Vale.”
Yet Rowan’s gaze stayed on him for one charged second longer. “I’m trying.”
Rowan gripped Eli’s wrist. “You shouldn’t have to do this.”
Eli met his eyes. “I know. But I choose to.”
At six fifty-five, the old facility waited beneath a boarded medical annex, its elevator still descending when all the abandoned floors above had gone dark. Calder stood behind glass in the central observation room, silver-haired and immaculate.
The place smelled of dust, disinfectant, and old rain. Eli saw the outline of small handprints beneath peeling paint along the corridor wall, then realized they were not handprints but faded sensor marks. The building had been designed to make frightened children feel observed from every angle.
Rowan’s fingers brushed Eli’s at his side. Not quite holding him. Asking.
Eli threaded their hands together before he could second-guess it.
“Eli,” he said over the speaker. “How kind of you to come.”
“Your invitation lacked charm.”
Calder smiled. “Sign the waiver.”
Eli signed a false document prepared by Mara, then walked into the glass room with Rowan. The door sealed behind them.
Their heart rates appeared on the screens outside. Two pulsing lines. Red and blue. Every camera in the facility swung toward them.
Calder raised his hand.
“Begin,” he said.
The Halcyon Protocol woke in a voice that sounded almost gentle.
FINAL DIRECTIVE:
Choose separation, or choose each other.

Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone.
