"The Protocol That Knew Our Names" Chapter 7 — Choose Me Awake
Chapter 7 — Choose Me Awake
The screens waited.
Red and blue lines climbed with Eli’s pulse, projected high enough that Calder could watch every panic beat through the glass.
“Choose separation,” the Halcyon Protocol repeated, “or choose each other.”
Rowan’s hand tightened around Eli’s. “Harbor,” he said.
Nothing happened.
Calder smiled from the control room. “The safety word only interrupts coercion. It does not erase consequence.”
Eli looked at the cameras, at the tiny red lights that meant Mara’s reporters could already be watching. His mouth was dry. He was afraid. That had to be allowed to exist beside the choice.
“I choose him,” he said.
Rowan turned sharply.
Eli did not look away. “Not because your machine told me to. Not because I’m scared of what happens if I don’t. I choose him because when I’m awake, and no one is ordering me, I still want to be near him.”
The room went silent except for the equipment’s hum.
Calder’s smile thinned. “Sentiment is not evidence.”
“No,” Rowan said. He stepped closer to Eli but did not touch him until Eli reached for him again. “Consent is.”
He faced the ceiling camera. “Harbor.”
This time, the blue pulse line dropped. The lights changed from warning red to white. A prompt appeared on the central panel.
COERCIVE AMPLIFICATION PAUSED. USER CONSENT REQUIRED.
Calder hit the glass with his palm. “Override it.”
“You can’t,” Mara’s voice said through the speaker system. “Because he just proved your override is the contamination.”
For the first time, fear crossed Calder’s face. It was quick, but Eli saw it. The man had spent years treating emotion as a laboratory output, something to be measured and sold. He had never understood that fear looked different when it belonged to someone who had finally lost control.
“You have no idea what Halcyon can do,” Calder said.
“Neither do you,” Eli replied. “That is why you needed to make it hurt people. Pain was the only response you understood.”
The outer monitors flickered. Mara appeared on them from a broadcast room somewhere above ground, her red dress replaced by a charcoal blazer. Behind her were three windows of reporters, one city prosecutor, and the entire Vale board.
“The original archive is releasing now,” she said.
Files began to populate every screen: Calder’s access logs, his biometric tests, the terrace command sequence. Eli saw the precise timestamp of the pulse that had made Rowan stagger. Calder had chosen the setting. Chosen the intensity. Chosen to turn a fear response into a weapon.
“Manipulated,” Calder said. “My sister is protecting an unstable heir.”
“You are not my sister,” Mara said coolly. “And I am protecting the people you used as data.”
The door to the glass room unlocked. Calder entered before Mara’s security team could reach him. He moved faster than Eli expected, catching Eli’s arm and yanking him toward the threshold.

“Let go,” Eli said.
“You have no idea what you are,” Calder snapped. “A trigger. A liability. He will ruin himself trying to keep you.”
Rowan stepped between them.
For a breath, Eli thought Rowan would hit him. Instead Rowan took Calder’s wrist and peeled it away with terrifying calm.
“You do not touch him,” Rowan said.
Calder’s face twisted. “There. Look at you. Exactly what I said.”
“No,” Eli said. He reached past Rowan and slammed his palm onto the emergency panel.
Alarms erupted. The room’s screens went black one by one. Calder stumbled as magnetic locks released throughout the facility.
Mara’s voice cut in. “Police are on site.”
Calder tried to run. Eli caught his sleeve, not to stop him but to pull the blue phone relay from Calder’s jacket pocket. He had hidden it there when signing the waiver, exactly where the system would find the cleanest signal.
The phone lit up in his hand.
TERMINATION PATHWAY: 62% COMPLETE.
Then a final line appeared.
ADDITIONAL ORIGINAL SUBJECT DETECTED.
Calder was taken away still shouting about ownership, intellectual property, the Vale name. Eli watched him disappear into the corridor and felt nothing like victory. The room had become too quiet.
Mara entered a moment later, followed by two officers and a paramedic who insisted on checking both their pupils, pulse, and oxygen levels. Eli answered questions mechanically. Rowan hovered close enough to help but far enough not to crowd him. When the paramedic asked if he felt safe, Eli glanced at the shattered glass control panel and almost laughed.
“Safer than I did an hour ago,” he said.
Mara squeezed his shoulder. “That qualifies as progress.”
Outside, reporters were already calling the glass room a crime scene. Eli knew there would be hearings, statements, strangers with opinions about a kiss they had not earned the right to interpret. But Rowan was still there, waiting rather than pulling. That made the future feel survivable.
Rowan stood a few feet away, waiting.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
Eli laughed weakly. “I think that question has become impossible to answer.”
“Try.”
“I’m angry. I’m scared. I’m relieved you didn’t punch your uncle on camera.”
“I considered it.”
“I know.”
Rowan’s smile appeared, then faded. “And us?”
Eli crossed the room. He lifted one hand to Rowan’s face, stopping before he touched him.
“Do you want this?” he asked.
Rowan’s breath caught. “Yes.”
Only then did Eli kiss him.
There was no task prompt. No audience that mattered. Rowan held Eli’s waist and kissed him carefully at first, then with the same shaking want he had tried to hide for years. Eli let himself lean into it. When they parted, their foreheads stayed together.
The central monitor blinked awake.
SUBJECT THREE: ACTIVE.
Below it, a new location marker blinked once on the building map, then vanished before Mara could capture it. A shoreline coordinate. A wordless invitation, or a warning.
Eli memorized the number anyway. He had learned that the things trying to disappear were often the things that mattered most.
And he had learned, painfully, not to ignore a warning simply because it arrived quietly.

Claire didn’t look away. “I have nothing left to hide.” Madison glanced at Claire’s gown and laughed. “Pretty elegant for a woman who got dumped.” The entire red carpet went silent. Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone. He just repeats his mistakes.” Camera flashes exploded. Furious, Madison ordered security to throw Claire out.
