"The Protocol That Knew Our Names" Chapter 8 — The Third Subject
Chapter 8 — The Third Subject
Nico Sloane was not in any public record after age eighteen.
Mara found that out by noon. She found a birth certificate, a sealed juvenile file, and a photograph of a dark-haired boy standing beside Adrian Sloane outside the Halcyon facility. Then the record went blank.
“The third original subject,” Eli said.
“Possibly,” Mara answered. “Or the person who has been keeping the system alive.”
Rowan sat beside Eli at June’s kitchen table, close but not touching. They had spent the night in separate rooms at Mara’s insistence, not because either of them wanted distance. The difference mattered. Eli kept noticing it.
On the table between them lay the blue phone, now silent.
“You can say it,” Rowan said.
“Say what?”
“That we moved too fast.”
Eli looked at him. “Did we?”
Rowan’s face tightened. “I don’t know. That’s the problem. I have wanted you for so long that I cannot tell the difference between relief and pressure.”
The honesty hurt more than a lie would have.
“I kissed you because I wanted to,” Eli said. “Not because a program told me to.”
“I know. But what if every feeling we have has been shaped by it?”
Eli pushed back from the table. “You think I’m a result.”
“No. I think you deserve certainty.”
“You keep saying things that sound noble when they mean you’re leaving.”
Rowan stood too. “I am trying not to take anything from you.”
“Then stop deciding what I can give.”
The silence after that was brutal.
Rowan lowered his gaze. “Until we know more, I won’t touch you unless you ask.”
Eli wanted to ask immediately. Instead he said, “Fine.”
It was not fine.
For the rest of the morning, they navigated each other like furniture in a house after an argument. Rowan asked whether Eli wanted tea instead of making it. Eli answered in single words. Every careful pause reminded him how easily desire had become another thing Rowan thought he had to protect him from.
At last Eli found Rowan on Mara’s balcony, watching the lake through a gray winter haze.
“You are allowed to be afraid,” Eli said.
Rowan gave a tired laugh. “That sounds generous.”
“I am also allowed to be angry that you keep turning fear into a management strategy.”
“Fair.”
“I do not need you to promise we are forever. I need you to stop treating me like I will break if we admit we want something.”
Rowan looked at him for a long time. “I want you,” he said. “I am only trying to make sure wanting you never becomes a reason I stop listening.”
Eli’s anger loosened, though it did not disappear. “Then listen when I say I will tell you no.”
“I will.”
“And if I say yes?” Eli asked.
“Then I will believe you,” Rowan said. “Without turning it into permission for everything else.”

It was not a perfect answer. It was better: an answer that left room for Eli to remain a person.
The bruise of their argument did not vanish, but it stopped feeling like a wall.
For now, that was enough to walk through together.
By evening, Nico made himself known. Every television in Mara’s office turned on at once. A man in his late twenties appeared on screen, pale in the blue light of a monitor-lined room.
“You should not have tried to close Halcyon,” he said. “It is the only thing that ever told the truth about you.”
“Nico,” Mara said.
He ignored her. “You think freedom means silence. You think choice means forgetting what made you. But the system did not invent your attachment. It recorded it.”
Rowan’s jaw clenched.
“Return the core server,” Nico continued. “Or I release every archived response from every child your company studied.”
The screen went black.
“He has the backup,” Mara said.
Eli replayed the recording until he heard it: a repeating foghorn behind Nico’s voice, followed by a metal bell and a gull cry. His old repair instincts took over. He separated the audio layers, removed Nico’s speech, and matched the horn pattern to lake navigation schedules.
“Not downtown,” he said. “The sound is too close. He’s near the old north shore rehabilitation campus.”
Rowan came to stand behind him. He stopped an inch away, respecting the boundary he had made.
Eli turned. “You can touch me, you know.”
Rowan’s expression cracked. “Only if you want me to.”
“I do.”
Rowan’s hand settled against Eli’s cheek, gentle enough to make anger impossible. “Then tell me when I’m wrong,” he said.
“I will.”
The rehabilitation campus sat empty beside the winter lake, its windows boarded and its sign hanging crooked. Inside the central hall, they found a room that had once been an art studio.
Photographs covered the walls.
Eli walked closer.
One showed three boys in hospital sweats climbing over a chain-link fence at dusk. Teen Rowan was in the middle, one hand locked around Eli’s. A third boy, laughing despite a bruised face, ran behind them.
Nico.
Eli touched the edge of the photograph.
For the first time, he remembered the sound of all three of them running.
Eli crouched beside a discarded box of art supplies and found a faded drawing underneath it: three stick figures holding hands beneath a crooked yellow sun. Someone had written
out together
across the bottom. He slipped that into his coat beside Sloane’s note.
Behind the studio door, a floorboard creaked. Eli and Rowan followed the sound into a narrow office where old hospital files were stacked to the ceiling. In the center sat a battery-powered monitor displaying a live feed of their faces.
Nico had been watching them arrive.
On the desk was a note in his father’s handwriting:
If they return, do not let them become subjects again.
Eli folded it carefully and put it in his pocket. It was not proof. It was not enough. But it was the first thing in the building that spoke of Nico as a son rather than a variable.

Claire stepped forward. “And you accepted a man who came to you already used.” Madison’s smile vanished. “At least he chose me.” “Did he choose you, or did he just run toward whatever was easier?” Ethan suddenly moved between them, but Claire’s final words landed first. “A cheater doesn’t choose anyone. He just repeats his mistakes.” Camera flashes exploded. Furious, Madison ordered security to throw Claire out.
