"Shh, My Rival Is the CEO" Chapter 10 — No More Pretending
Six weeks later, Julian woke to the smell of coffee.
He opened one eye.
The other side of the bed was empty.
“Traitor.”
From downstairs, Ethan called back.
“I heard that.”
Julian sat up.
They were back in Tribeca.
Technically.
The penthouse no longer looked like Ethan’s penthouse.
A guitar leaned against the living-room wall.
Two helmets sat beside the elevator.
There were engine magazines on the coffee table.
One of Ethan’s pristine storage cabinets now contained enough racing equipment to violate several building regulations.
And the carburetor was back.
Ethan had stopped asking Julian to remove it.
Julian considered that love.
He walked downstairs wearing Ethan’s shirt.
Ethan stood in the kitchen in a white dress shirt and dark trousers.
Julian stole his toast.
Ethan stared at him.
“Every morning.”
“It tastes better.”
“It’s the same bread.”
“We’ve had this conversation.”
Ethan poured another cup of coffee.
“You have a meeting at eleven.”
Julian groaned.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I survived a criminal conspiracy. I shouldn’t have meetings.”
“You now control forty-one percent of Cross Holdings.”
“Exactly. Sounds like Marcus’s problem.”
“Marcus disagrees.”
“Marcus disagrees with joy.”
Ethan slid the coffee toward him.
Julian took it.
Six weeks.
No engagement announcement.
No family contract.
No cameras following them through charity galas.
They had been given the option to quietly terminate the alliance.
Neither had signed.
But neither had discussed marriage again.
Not yet.
The war had ended.
The difficult part was figuring out what came after.
---
Blackwood Technologies remained Ethan’s company.
That had never changed.
What changed was everything underneath it.
Ethan dissolved Blackwood Command.
The family’s illegal enforcement network was dismantled piece by piece.
Some operations were sold.
Some disappeared.
Some became legitimate security companies under outside oversight.
Richard hated half of it.
Ethan did it anyway.
Julian’s transformation was less elegant.
At his first official Cross board meeting, he wore a leather jacket.
Marcus nearly had a stroke.
At the second, Julian fired three executives connected to Kane.
At the third, he discovered he was irritatingly good at corporate strategy.
He blamed Ethan.
“You made me boring,” Julian said one night.
Ethan looked up from his laptop.
“You raced through Queens at one hundred and twenty miles per hour yesterday.”
“Exactly. I’m losing my edge.”
“You were chased by two police cars.”
“They weren’t chasing me.”
“They called me.”
Julian paused.
“That feels like a privacy violation.”
Ethan returned to his screen.
“I paid the ticket.”
“See? Husband behavior.”
Silence.
Julian froze.
Ethan looked up.
Neither man spoke.
Julian cleared his throat.
“I meant controlling billionaire behavior.”
“Of course.”
The laptop became suddenly fascinating.
Julian walked away.
Neither mentioned it again.
---
The Hollow reopened in November.
Blackwood Development still owned the block.
But the redevelopment plan changed.
No luxury tower.
No demolition.
The old buildings were restored instead.
Affordable commercial leases.
Music venues.
Independent workshops.
Mason’s garage received a twenty-year lease at a rate so low he accused Julian of sleeping with the landlord.
Julian replied that technically he was.
Ethan did not find that funny.
Mason did.
On reopening night, Julian returned to the stage.
The room was packed.
He adjusted the microphone.
Then he saw Ethan.
Same seat at the bar.
Same black suit.
This time, Julian smiled.
“You stalking me again?”
The audience laughed.
Ethan lifted his glass.
“I was here first.”
Julian shook his head.
Some things apparently never changed.
He played for forty minutes.
Afterward, Ethan was waiting backstage.
“You were good.”
“Good?”
“Very good.”
“That’s better.”
Ethan handed him his jacket.
Julian stared at it.
“What?”
“Put it on.”
“Why?”
“We’re going somewhere.”
Julian narrowed his eyes.
“Is this a kidnapping?”
“You’re impossible to kidnap.”
“Romantic.”
“Just get in the car.”
---
The car took them to Red Hook.
Julian recognized the warehouse immediately.
The place where everything had started.
Except it looked different.
The broken fencing had been replaced.
The pavement had been resurfaced.
Lights surrounded the track.
Julian got out slowly.
“What did you do?”
Ethan stood beside the Mercedes.
“Nothing.”
“You bought it.”
“I already owned it.”
“You threatened to shut this place down.”
“I did shut it down.”
Julian looked around.
Cars were arriving.
Mason stepped out of the garage building.
Julian stared.
“You knew?”
Mason grinned.
“For three weeks.”
“You are dead to me.”
“Get in line.”
Julian looked at Ethan.
“What is this?”
“A legal track.”
Julian blinked.
“What?”
“Permits. Insurance. Safety crews. Proper barriers.”
Julian looked horrified.
“You made underground racing responsible.”
“I made it harder for you to die.”
“That is deeply offensive.”
Ethan almost smiled.
Julian looked toward the track.
The black Mustang waited at the starting line.
His Mustang.
Rebuilt.
Mason tossed him the keys.
“Try not to remove the mirror this time.”
Julian caught them.
He looked at Ethan.
“You did this?”
“Mason did most of it.”
“Who paid?”
Ethan said nothing.
Julian laughed.
“Of course.”
---
Twenty minutes later, Julian crossed the finish line first.
Again.
He spun the Mustang sideways.
Again.
Smoke rolled across the pavement.
Again.
But this time, when he climbed out, Ethan was waiting at the finish line.
Julian removed his helmet.
“Are you here to shut me down again?”
“No.”
Ethan held something in his hand.
A folded document.
Julian recognized it immediately.
The original engagement contract.
His smile faded.
“Where did you get that?”
“Claire.”
“She kept it?”
“She keeps everything.”
Ethan opened the contract.
Ninety-day engagement.
Shared residence.
Public appearances.
Marriage alliance.
Two signatures.
Ethan Blackwood.
Julian Cross.
Julian shoved his helmet beneath one arm.
“So.”
Ethan tore the document in half.
Julian stared.
Ethan tore it again.
The pieces fell onto the hood of the Mustang.
“So we’re done?” Julian asked.
Ethan looked at him.
“With the contract.”
A pause.
“Not with us.”
Julian swallowed.
He covered it with a smile.
“Good line.”
“I practiced.”
That surprised a laugh out of him.
“You practiced?”
“Twice.”
“CEO rehearses emotional conversation. Shocking.”
“Julian.”
“Sorry.”
Ethan reached into his pocket.
Julian immediately stopped smiling.
“Wait.”
Ethan paused.
Julian stared at his hand.
“If you pull out another contract, I’m leaving.”
“It’s not a contract.”
“If it’s paperwork of any kind—”
“Would you stop talking?”
Julian grinned.
“Nervous?”
“Yes.”
That answer silenced him.
Ethan Blackwood did not admit fear easily.
Ethan took Julian’s left hand.
The old engagement ring was still there.
“You kept it.”
Julian looked down.
“Maybe I liked it.”
“You said it looked pretentious.”
“It does.”
“You said the stone was obnoxious.”
“It is.”
“You said—”
“Are you proposing or reviewing my complaints?”
Ethan stared at him.
Julian’s heart began pounding.
Ethan removed the old ring.
For one terrible second, Julian felt the absence of it.
Then Ethan placed another ring in his palm.
Simple.
Dark platinum.
No family crest.
No Blackwood symbol.
No Cross symbol.
Nothing inherited.
Nothing political.
Julian looked at him.
“This one means nothing to them,” Ethan said.
Julian understood immediately.
No alliance.
No ceasefire.
No family obligation.
Just them.
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“I spent most of my life being told exactly what I would inherit, who I would become, what I would protect.”
Julian said nothing.
“So did you.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t want them choosing this.”
Julian’s throat tightened.
Ethan continued.
“I want you to.”
Around them, engines rumbled.
People talked.
Music played from the warehouse.
Yet somehow the world felt completely quiet.
Julian looked at the ring.
Then at Ethan.
“What exactly are you asking?”
Ethan’s mouth tightened.
“You know exactly what I’m asking.”
“I want to hear you say it.”
“Of course you do.”
Julian smiled.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Marry me.”
Julian let the silence stretch.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Julian.”
Julian burst out laughing.
“You should see your face.”
“This isn’t funny.”
“It’s a little funny.”
Ethan turned away.
Julian caught his jacket.
“Hey.”
Ethan looked back.
Julian’s amusement disappeared.
“Yes.”
Ethan went still.
Julian took the ring.
“Yes, Ethan.”
No families.
No photographers.
No lawyers.
No armed guards.
No one negotiating territory in exchange for their lives.
Just two men standing beside a black Mustang in the same Brooklyn lot where they had once been certain they hated each other.
Ethan slipped the ring onto Julian’s finger.
Julian examined it.
“Better.”
“You approve?”
“Barely.”
Ethan pulled him closer.
Julian placed one hand against his chest.
“One condition.”
Ethan sighed.
“Of course.”
“No joint checking account.”
“Fine.”
“I keep racing.”
“I know.”
“The carburetor stays in the living room.”
“No.”
“Then the wedding’s off.”
Ethan stared at him.
Julian smiled.
Ethan kissed him.
The crowd somewhere behind them cheered.
Julian pulled back.
“You planned that too?”
“No.”
“Mason?”
“Probably.”
Julian glanced toward the warehouse.
Mason immediately looked away.
Julian laughed.
Then Ethan’s hand settled against the back of his neck.
“You know what your problem is?” Julian asked.
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“I assume you’re about to tell me.”
Julian smiled.
“You still think buying something means you own everyone standing on it.”
Ethan remembered.
The first night.
The first argument.
The beginning of everything.
“No,” Ethan said.
He pulled Julian closer.
“Just the ground beneath their feet.”
Julian laughed.
“Still an asshole.”
“And you’re still trespassing.”
“Not anymore.”
Julian held up his hand.
The ring caught the warehouse lights.
“I’m marrying the landlord.”
Ethan finally laughed.
Not the controlled almost-smile Julian had spent months trying to steal from him.
A real laugh.
Open.
Warm.
His.
Julian looked at the man he had once believed was everything he hated.
The billionaire.
The rival.
The Blackwood heir.
The man behind the gun.
The man who had stood beside him when every person in their lives demanded they stand apart.
Julian kissed him again.
This time, there was nothing fake about it.
No contract.
No ceasefire.
No game.
And no more pretending.
