"The Roommate Behind the Handle" Chapter 11
They did not move in together because they were in love.
At least, that was not the reason Ethan put on the rental application.
The form said they needed a two-bedroom apartment within walking distance of Hawthorne University. It said their current housing assignment had become unavailable due to a residence-life investigation. It said Lucas Vale and Ethan Cole would share responsibility for the rent.
It did not say that Ethan had once loved Lucas's voice before he knew his face.
It did not say that Lucas had kissed him between two packed dorm beds and then asked whether Ethan preferred south-facing windows.
It definitely did not say that they argued for forty-five minutes about whether a dishwasher was a luxury or a basic human right.
"It is a basic human right," Lucas said from the passenger seat of Ethan's borrowed car.
"You say that because you've never had to choose between a dishwasher and groceries."
"I have chosen groceries."
"Not with your own money."
Lucas looked wounded. "That was one time."
"It was literally this morning."
"The landlord said the unit had one."
"And I said we could wash dishes by hand."
"Which is a thing people say when they have given up on happiness."
Ethan grinned as he parked outside a narrow brick building three blocks from campus.
It was not glamorous. The front steps were chipped, and the mailboxes leaned slightly to one side. But the upstairs apartment had two small bedrooms, a living room with uneven hardwood floors, and a kitchen window that caught late-afternoon light.
Ethan walked in and felt something unclench.
"It has good windows," Lucas said softly.
"It has a stove that probably works."
"It has a pantry."
"It has rent that doesn't make me panic."
The landlord, an older woman named Mrs. Kline, watched them from the doorway with a knowing expression.
"You boys are students?"
"Yes, ma'am," Ethan said.
"Quiet?"
Lucas answered before Ethan could. "Mostly."
Ethan bumped his elbow.
Mrs. Kline smiled. "The downstairs tenant works nights. No parties. No drilling holes in the walls. No pets without asking."
"No problem," Ethan said.
"And the deposit is one month."
His heart sank a little.
Lucas started to speak, but Ethan caught his eye.
Not yet.
They left the apartment and sat on the front steps while the sun slipped behind the campus library.
"I can pay the deposit," Lucas said.
"I know."
"And you can pay me back over time, if that matters to you."
"It does."
"Okay."
Ethan twisted the key ring in his hands. "But I don't want a debt hanging over us. I don't want every nice thing you do to make me wonder whether I have to earn it."
Lucas was quiet.
Then he said, "What if we make a plan instead?"
"What kind of plan?"
"You tell me what you can pay. I tell you what I can pay. We divide the rest by income, not by pride."

Ethan looked at him.
"You don't have to say yes," Lucas added. "I just... I want to be your partner. Not your rescue."
The words settled into Ethan more gently than any promise of money could have.
"I picked up two extra library shifts," Ethan said. "And Professor Singh offered me a paid assistant position on the digital archive project."
Lucas's face brightened. "You got it?"
"I got it."
"Ethan, that's amazing."
The pride in his voice was so open that Ethan had to look away for a moment.
"Plus," Ethan said, "my scholarship office approved the emergency housing grant."
"Then we can do this."
"We can."
They signed the lease two days later.
Both names were printed beside the same blank lines.
Ethan stared at his name after he signed it. Then he watched Lucas write his underneath in a careful, architectural hand.
There was no drama in it. No grand speech.
Just ink, a date, two signatures, and a small apartment that was finally theirs.
Derek's hearing took place the following week. Ethan did not attend in person. Naomi called afterward to explain that the device records, corridor footage, fake messages, and voice memo had established the theft and framing. Derek lost his housing eligibility for the year and was referred for student-conduct proceedings.
Ethan listened in silence.
"You did the hard part," Naomi told him. "You spoke up."
After the call, he stood in the middle of the apartment surrounded by boxes.
Lucas came out of the kitchen holding two mismatched mugs.
"Good news?" he asked.
"It's over."
Lucas set the mugs down. "Mostly?"
"Mostly."
Ethan thought he might feel triumphant. Instead, he felt tired. Relieved. Sad for the version of himself who had spent so long assuming he had to survive every bad thing quietly.
Lucas came close enough that Ethan could choose the distance.
Ethan chose to close it.
He put his arms around Lucas.
Lucas held him carefully at first, then tighter when Ethan leaned in.
"I'm proud of you," Lucas murmured into his hair.
Ethan closed his eyes. "You keep saying that."
"I plan to say it a lot."
"That could become annoying."
"I am willing to take the risk."
Their apartment slowly became real.
Lucas assembled a bookshelf and then pretended not to notice when Ethan used it for game figurines and textbooks instead of books. Ethan bought a cheap plant from the grocery store and nearly killed it in the first week. Lucas saved it by moving it closer to the window, then named it Orbit.
They learned that Lucas made terrible pancakes but excellent pasta. Ethan learned that Lucas could not work without music but only owned three playlists. Lucas learned that Ethan hated sleeping in complete darkness and left the hall light on when he was anxious.
This time, Lucas noticed.
This time, he asked.
One Friday in May, months after they moved in, Ethan woke to find Lucas sitting cross-legged on the living-room floor with a laptop open in front of him.

"What are you doing?" Ethan asked.
Lucas looked up. "Looking at apartments in Seattle."
Ethan blinked. "Why?"
"Not to move tomorrow. Your digital archive project posted a summer internship there. You said you were thinking about applying."
"I said it was impossible."
"You said it was expensive."
"Same thing."
Lucas turned the laptop around. He had made a spreadsheet.
Of course he had.
There were tabs for travel, temporary housing, internship pay, and scholarships. There was a section titled
WAYS THIS CAN WORK
.
Ethan stared at it.
"You made this for me?"
Lucas's ears went pink. "For us to look at. If you want to."
Ethan walked over and sat beside him.
"I don't want you to build your life around my opportunities," he said.
"I don't." Lucas looked at him seriously. "I want to build a life where we can tell each other what we want before we decide it is impossible."
Ethan took his hand.
"That's better," he said.
Their graduation ceremony arrived under a clear June sky.
Ethan's mother came wearing a blue dress she said made her look “too fancy for bleachers.” She cried through most of the speeches and hugged Lucas so warmly that he turned red.
"Thank you for taking care of my boy," she told him.
Lucas glanced at Ethan before answering.
"We take care of each other," he said.
Ethan loved him a little more for that.
Later, after the photographs and the exhausted congratulations, Ethan and Lucas went back to the apartment. The windows were open. Summer air moved through the rooms, carrying the distant sound of traffic and someone laughing on the sidewalk.
Ethan sat at his desk with his old headset in his hands.
Lucas leaned against the bedroom doorframe. "You keeping it?"
"It still works."
"Barely."
"It got me through some things."
Lucas smiled. "It got us through some things."
Ethan put the headset down. "Hey, Northstar?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever miss it?"
"What?"
"Not knowing. The calls. Having that whole separate place where we could say things without looking at each other."
Lucas considered it.
"I miss parts of it," he said. "I miss hearing you laugh when you thought I couldn't see you. I miss the first night you told me about the yellow dog outside your old grocery store."
"His name was Pickle."
"I know."
"But?"
Lucas crossed the room and sat on the arm of Ethan's chair.
"But I don't need a screen to prove you love me anymore."
Ethan looked up at him.
Lucas's smile was small and certain. "I get to come home to you."
Ethan reached for him.
Their kiss was familiar now. Not less electric, just safer. It carried all the things they had learned to say out loud.
When they pulled apart, Ethan glanced toward the bright kitchen, the plant on the windowsill, the two names still printed on the lease tucked into a drawer.
Once, he had thought love was a voice that could only reach him through headphones.
Now Lucas was here, close enough to touch.
"Come on," Ethan said. "We have dishes."
Lucas groaned. "The dishwasher is a human right."
"And yet we do not have one."
"A tragedy."
Ethan laughed, took Lucas's hand, and led him into the light.
