"The Double-Edged Bet" Chapter 4 — Sparrow
Leo did not believe in coincidence.
He believed in insufficient information.
By Friday morning, he had a hypothesis.
By Friday night, he intended to prove it.
The first test was harmless.
The Mercer meeting ended shortly after six.
People were packing their laptops when Leo looked toward Sam.
"There's a place on West Tenth."
Sam glanced up.
"What?"
"Jazz club. Used to be there."
Rachel looked between them.
Sam frowned.
"You're giving me nightlife recommendations now?"
"It closed years ago."
"Then it's a terrible recommendation."
Leo ignored that.
"Blue Lantern."
Sam's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Leo saw it.
"I know it," Sam said.
"Do you?"
"My dad used to go there."
Leo nodded once.
"Interesting."
Sam narrowed his eyes.
"Why?"
"No reason."
"There is absolutely a reason."
"Not everything is about you, Bennett."
"Coming from you, that's impressive."
Leo walked away.
---
At 11:42 that night, North called Sparrow.
Leo waited fourteen minutes before mentioning music.
Too fast would be obvious.
He asked about jazz.
Sam said he liked it.
Leo asked why.
"My dad."
Leo stared at the windows.
"He was a musician?"
"No. He just loved live music."
"Any favorite place?"
Sam hesitated.
"There used to be a club on West Tenth."
Leo's pulse changed.
"Name?"
"Blue Lantern."
One.
The next test came Saturday.
Coffee.
During an emergency strategy session, Leo arrived with drinks for the small team.
He handed Sam a cup.
Sam looked suspicious.
"What is this?"
"Coffee."
"I can see that."
"Then why ask?"
Sam took a sip.
His eyebrows lifted.
Oat milk.
No sugar.
Exactly how Sparrow had once described it.
Sam looked at Leo.
"How did you know?"
Leo opened a folder.
"Lucky guess."
"You're not lucky."
"Thank you."
"That wasn't a compliment."
Two.
Then Leo noticed Sam signing a document with his left hand.
Three.
Saturday night, North casually mentioned food.
Sam announced that cilantro tasted like soap and should be prosecuted.
Four.
Leo didn't sleep much.
By Sunday, he no longer seriously doubted it.
But doubt and proof were different things.
Leo wanted proof.
So Monday morning, as the Mercer teams gathered again, he created it.
The meeting was hostile from the beginning.
Daniel Mercer wanted revised numbers by noon.
Halcyon Ridge challenged Callahan's financing protections.
Callahan challenged Halcyon's governance structure.
At 10:26, Sam interrupted Leo for the third time.
Leo closed his folder.
"Do you ever get tired of hearing yourself argue?"
Sam leaned back.
"Do you?"
"I get paid to."
"So do I."
Leo stared directly at him.
Then he said, very deliberately:
"Careful, Bennett. Confidence looks good on you. Certainty makes you reckless."
Sam's eyes narrowed.
It was an oddly specific sentence.
Leo moved on immediately.
Three hours later, the meeting ended.
Leo returned to his office.
He waited.
At 10:18 that night, Sparrow appeared online.
Leo didn't message him first.
At 10:23, Sam called.
Leo answered.
"Long day?"
"You have no idea."
Leo looked out over Manhattan.
"Callahan?"
"Who else?"
Leo smiled.
"What did he do now?"
"He spent six hours being professionally intolerable."
"Specific."
"And then he said something so unbelievably condescending."
Leo's fingers tightened around the phone.
"What?"
Sam changed his voice, imitating Leo's colder tone.
"Careful, Bennett. Confidence looks good on you. Certainty makes you reckless."
Silence.
Leo stopped breathing for half a second.
There it was.
Not probability.
Not pattern recognition.
Proof.
Sparrow was Samuel Bennett.
Samuel Bennett was Sparrow.
The man who attacked Leo's models every morning was the same man who called him after midnight when he couldn't sleep.
The man who described Leo as a cold-blooded demon was the same man who had admitted he might like North if they ever met.
Leo should have felt alarmed.
Instead, something dangerously close to satisfaction spread through him.
"North?"
Sam's voice brought him back.
"I'm here."
"You went quiet again."
"Thinking."
"About?"
Leo walked slowly toward the window.
Far downtown, somewhere beyond the lights, Sam was probably sitting in that West Village apartment he'd never named.
Leo could end this now.
He could tell him.
He should tell him.
Instead, he asked, "Does he make you nervous?"
Sam laughed.
"Leo?"
"Yes."
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Leo noticed.
"That sounded convincing."
"Shut up."
"Interesting."
"What's interesting?"
"You."
Sam became quiet.
Leo smiled.
A new possibility had opened in front of him.
A reckless one.
For years, Leo had understood negotiations through information.
Who knew what.
Who wanted what.
Who was bluffing.
Information created leverage.
And now Leo possessed something Samuel Bennett did not.
He knew both sides of their relationship.
Sam only knew one.
The thought should have made Leo uncomfortable.
Instead, it fascinated him.
"Can I ask you something?" Sam said.
"You usually do."
"Why do you listen to me complain about him?"
Leo's smile faded slightly.
"Maybe I enjoy it."
"That's concerning."
"Maybe I enjoy you."
Silence.
Leo hadn't planned to say it.
Sam didn't answer.
For the first time all night, Leo wondered if he had gone too far.
Then Sam said quietly:
"That's even more concerning."
But Leo could hear the smile in his voice.
And suddenly the situation was no longer amusing.
It was dangerous.
Because Leo knew exactly who Sparrow was now.
He knew his face.
His name.
His office.
His coffee order.
The way he rolled a silver coin across his fingers when nervous.
Tomorrow morning, Sam would sit across from him again and look at him with open hostility.
Tomorrow night, the same man would call North and lower every wall between them.
Leo looked at Sparrow's icon glowing on his phone.
For the first time in years, Leo Callahan had an advantage he wasn't sure he wanted.
And for the first time in his life—
he didn't intend to give it up.
