"The Double-Edged Bet" Chapter 10 — The Double-Edged Bet
Three weeks later, Mercer Dynamics was still independent.
That surprised almost everyone.
Callahan Capital had not acquired it.
Neither had Halcyon Ridge.
Whitmore Equity had withdrawn its offer after Daniel Mercer's board referred the manipulation scheme to federal authorities and outside counsel.
Thomas Vale was gone.
Grant Whitmore had stopped returning reporters' calls.
And the deal that remained looked nothing like the one that had started the war.
Callahan Capital would provide acquisition financing and restructuring expertise.
Halcyon Ridge would take a significant strategic position.
Mercer's management would retain operating control.
Nobody got everything.
Which, Sam had learned, was sometimes the only way to know a negotiation had actually worked.
At 4:17 on a Friday afternoon, Daniel Mercer signed the final document.
He put down the pen.
"Congratulations."
Sam exhaled.
Around the conference table, lawyers began shaking hands.
Mason opened a bottle of champagne.
Rachel immediately stole the first glass.
Leo remained seated.
Sam looked across at him.
Their eyes met.
Three weeks.
They had worked together every day.
Professionally.
No Hush.
No late-night calls.
No personal messages.
Leo had kept his word.
He hadn't pressured Sam.
Hadn't asked for forgiveness.
Hadn't even mentioned what had happened.
Somehow that made it harder.
Sam had expected Leo to negotiate.
Leo negotiated everything.
Instead, he had given Sam the one thing he'd asked for.
Space.
Rachel appeared beside Sam.
"You know you can talk to him."
Sam took a champagne glass.
"I talk to him every day."
"You discussed a debt covenant for forty minutes this morning."
"Very emotional."
"Sam."
He drank.
Rachel sighed.
"You're exhausting."
"So I've been told."
Her eyes narrowed.
"By him?"
Sam didn't answer.
Rachel smiled.
"Thought so."
The celebration moved to a restaurant near Bryant Park.
Sam stayed for one drink.
Leo didn't approach him.
That was becoming intolerable.
At 7:12, Sam left.
He walked without deciding where he was going.
By 7:40, he was in Central Park.
The September air had turned cool.
He sat on a bench near the Mall and took his phone from his pocket.
Hush was still installed.
He hadn't opened it since disconnecting from North.
For several seconds, he stared at the icon.
Then tapped it.
His account remained.
Messages remained.
North didn't.
Sam opened the archived conversation.
Months of text.
Ridiculous arguments.
Midnight jokes.
Insomnia.
Confessions.
He scrolled backward.
NORTH:
You're late.
SPARROW:
Were you waiting?
NORTH:
Don't flatter yourself.
Sam smiled despite himself.
Further.
SPARROW:
My nightmare CEO did something almost human today.
Further.
SPARROW:
I think I might actually like you.
Then:
SPARROW:
Don't ever lie to me.
Sam stopped.
Pain returned.
But it was different now.
Less sharp.
More complicated.
He finally understood something he hadn't been ready to understand three weeks earlier.
Leo had lied by omission.
Leo had violated his trust.
Both things were true.
But North had not been invented.
The dry humor was Leo.
The insomnia was Leo.
The loneliness was Leo.
The man who listened to Sam talk about his father at midnight was the same man who remembered an analyst's daughter's recital.
The same man who had given Halcyon the evidence that could have cost Callahan the Mercer deal.
One man.
Flawed enough to hurt him.
Real enough to regret it.
Sam closed the conversation.
Then deleted Hush.
Leo was still in his office at 9:06 p.m.
Mason had left.
The assistants had left.
Half of Manhattan appeared to have left.
Leo remained behind his desk reading a report he had already read twice.
He heard the outer office door.
Then footsteps.
Leo looked up.
Sam appeared in the doorway.
No jacket.
No tie.
Hands in his pockets.
Leo stood.
"Bennett."
Sam frowned.
"Really?"
Leo corrected himself.
"Sam."
"Better."
"What are you doing here?"
Sam walked inside.
"Terrible greeting."
"I wasn't expecting you."
"I noticed."
Leo studied him.
"Is something wrong with the Mercer documents?"
"No."
"Halcyon?"
"No."
"Then why—"
Sam pulled the silver half dollar from his pocket.
Leo stopped.
Sam walked to the desk.
He placed the coin between them.
The metal clicked against the wood.
Leo looked at it.
Then at Sam.
"Heads," Sam said, "I stay."
Leo's expression became unreadable.
"And tails?"
Sam's mouth curved.
"You ask me to."
Leo looked down at the coin.
For months, Sam had carried it into every important negotiation.
A habit inherited from a man who had trusted too easily.
Leo understood what Sam was offering.
Not forgiveness without consequences.
Not a return to what they had been.
A choice.
A new negotiation.
Leo reached for the coin.
Sam watched.
Leo placed one finger over it.
He didn't flip it.
Sam raised an eyebrow.
"That's cheating."
"I don't gamble when I know what I want."
"That's literally the opposite of a bet."
Leo slid the coin back toward him.
"Stay."
One word.
No clever strategy.
No leverage.
Sam's smile disappeared.
Leo's voice was quieter when he continued.
"Stay."
Sam looked at him for a long time.
"You're terrible at apologies."
"I apologized."
"Once."
"How many do you require?"
"I haven't decided."
"I can schedule them."
"Of course you can."
"Tuesday and Thursday?"
"Too corporate."
"Nightly?"
Sam's eyes softened.
"Maybe."
Leo didn't smile.
Not yet.
"Sam."
"What?"
"I meant what I said."
"Which part?"
"All of it."
Sam looked away briefly.
Leo continued.
"I can't promise I'll suddenly become easy."
"God, no. That would be suspicious."
"I can't promise I won't make mistakes."
"You will."
"Frequently?"
"Statistically? Almost certainly."
Leo's mouth twitched.
"But I can promise you won't have to wonder which version of me you're talking to."
Sam looked back at him.
"No North?"
"No North."
"Good."
Something flickered in Leo's expression.
Sam noticed.
"You miss him?"
Leo considered the question.
"No."
"That sounded convincing."
"I don't need him anymore."

Sam's breath caught.
Leo stepped closer.
Slowly.
Giving Sam every opportunity to move.
Sam didn't.
The distance between them became the same distance Leo had once deliberately used to make him uncomfortable.
This time it felt entirely different.
Leo stopped.
"Tell me to back up."
Sam looked into his eyes.
"No."
"Sam."
"You're talking too much."
That finally made Leo smile.
Sam reached for the front of Leo's shirt and kissed him.
For one second, Leo didn't move.
Samuel Bennett had apparently found the only reliable method of making Leo Callahan speechless.
Then Leo's hand came carefully to Sam's waist.
Not controlling.
Not trapping.
Just there.
Sam kissed him harder.
Weeks of anger collided with months of attraction.
North's midnight voice.
Leo's impossible stare across the conference table.
The man Sam had trusted.
The man he'd hated.
The man he'd wanted before realizing they were the same person.
When they separated, Leo rested his forehead briefly against Sam's.
Sam was breathing harder.
"So," Leo murmured.
"Don't ruin it."
"I was going to say something charming."
"Statistically unlikely."
Leo laughed.
Sam froze.
Then laughed too.
He knew that sound.
Of course he did.
He had fallen for it in the dark before he ever understood who it belonged to.
Leo looked at the silver coin still resting on the desk.
"You never flipped it."
"You didn't let me."
"What would you have done if it landed heads?"
"Stayed."
"And tails?"
Sam looked at him.
"Stayed."
Leo narrowed his eyes.
"So the bet was rigged."
Sam smiled.
"Now you're catching up."
Six months later, Leo and Sam were once again sitting across from each other in a conference room.
Not Mercer this time.
A healthcare technology deal in Boston.
Twelve lawyers surrounded them.
Three bankers were pretending not to look terrified.
Sam pushed a term sheet across the table.
"Your structure doesn't work."
Leo looked at him.
"We've had this conversation."
"Apparently you didn't learn anything."
"My return assumptions are correct."
"Your return assumptions are fantasy."
One of the junior attorneys looked nervously between them.
Everyone in New York finance knew that Callahan Capital and Halcyon Ridge had developed a strange habit of appearing on the same deals.
Sometimes as partners.
Sometimes as opponents.
Frequently both.
Nobody completely understood it.
Mason did.
Rachel did.
Unfortunately.
Leo leaned back.
"You always talk this much when you're wrong?"
Sam smiled.
"Only when the other side needs extra time to understand me."
Leo stared at him.
Sam's smile widened.
Under the table, his phone vibrated.
A message.
From Leo.
LEO:
You're impossible.
Sam typed without looking down.
SAM:
You like me.
Across the table, Leo checked his phone.
His expression didn't change.
Sam's phone vibrated again.
LEO:
Debatable.
Sam looked up.
Leo was already watching him.
That night, back in New York, Sam stood in Leo's kitchen while Leo opened a bottle of wine.
"You know," Sam said, "Hush said we were ninety-eight percent compatible."
Leo handed him a glass.
"Only ninety-eight?"
"Apparently."
"Algorithm error."
"I thought so too."
"Obviously."
Sam leaned against the counter.
"Maybe the missing two percent was you being an asshole."
Leo took a drink.
"More likely your inability to recognize superior judgment."
"There he is."
"Who?"
"The cold-blooded demon."
Leo stepped closer.
Sam smiled.
"No anonymous profile to complain to now."
"Tragic."
"You'll have to complain directly to me."
"I think I can manage."
Leo kissed him.
Later that night, Sam's silver coin rested on the nightstand beside Leo's watch.
No one had flipped it.
There was no reason to.
They had spent months believing they were making two separate bets.
One across a conference table.
One through a phone screen after midnight.
They had been wrong.
There had only ever been one.
Two men.
Two identities.
One dangerous advantage.
And one choice neither of them was willing to leave to chance.
