"The Mafia King Hunted a Hacker… Then Found His Five-Year-Old Son" Chapter 6 — My Mother Is Lying

Theo discovered his mother was lying on a Tuesday.

Not because Evelyn made a mistake.

Because Theo had inherited two unfortunate qualities from his parents.

Adrian's suspicion.

And Evelyn's refusal to leave a puzzle unsolved.

The external drive had bothered him for months.

Now it bothered him more.

At 1:08 a.m., Theo sat under his blanket with his laptop.

The Moretti estate was silent.

His mother slept two rooms away.

Adrian was downstairs.

Theo knew because he had already checked the security cameras.

The encrypted folder opened after thirty-seven minutes.

Theo smiled.

Then stopped.

There were hundreds of files.

Bank records.

Server logs.

Photographs.

Names.

MORETTI HOLDINGS.

2021.

HAWTHORNE.

His smile disappeared.

He opened another folder.

One file was labeled:

E.C. — FORENSIC REPORT.

Theo clicked.

At the top was a name.

EVELYN CARTER.

Underneath:

CYBER FORENSICS CONSULTANT.

Theo frowned.

His mother planned hotel events.

She did not do cyber forensics.

At least, that was what she had told him.

He opened another document.

A photograph appeared.

His mother.

Five years younger.

Standing outside Moretti Tower.

Then another.

Adrian beside her.

They were looking at each other.

Not like enemies.

Theo leaned closer.

"Oh."

His parents had definitely lied.

---

The next morning, Evelyn found Theo waiting at the kitchen island.

Her external drive sat in front of him.

She stopped.

"Theo."

"What's cyber forensics?"

Her stomach dropped.

Adrian, pouring coffee across the room, became still.

Evelyn walked toward Theo.

"Where did you get that?"

"Your bag."

"You went through my things?"

"You lied."

"Theo."

"You said you planned events."

"I do."

"You also investigated computer crimes."

Adrian put down his coffee.

"What?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Not now.

Theo opened his laptop.

A report appeared.

Adrian crossed the room.

Evelyn slammed the screen shut.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"Open it."

"No."

"Evelyn."

"Not in front of him."

Theo folded his arms.

"It's about me."

"It is not."

"It's about him."

He pointed at Adrian.

"And he's about me."

Adrian looked almost impressed.

Evelyn was not.

"Upstairs."

"Mom—"

"Now."

Theo didn't move.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Theo."

The boy looked at him.

"Give us ten minutes."

"Are you going to yell?"

Adrian glanced at Evelyn.

"Probably."

Evelyn glared.

Adrian added, "Quietly."

Theo considered it.

"Fine."

He slid off the chair.

At the doorway, he turned.

"Eleven minutes and I'm coming back."

Then he left.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

"Cyber forensics?"

She said nothing.

"How many more things don't I know about you?"

"Enough."

He laughed without humor.

"Start talking."

Evelyn looked toward the staircase.

Then at the external drive.

"Five years ago, I wasn't working in hospitality."

"I gathered that."

"I worked for a private digital-forensics firm in Washington."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What firm?"

"Blackridge Analytics."

He knew the name.

Blackridge handled financial breaches, corporate espionage, and government contracts.

"You were an investigator."

"Yes."

"And Moretti Holdings?"

"Was a client."

Adrian stared at her.

"You came into my life because you were investigating me."

"No."

"Don't lie again."

"I was investigating transactions moving through companies connected to you."

"That's the same thing."

"No, it isn't."

Her voice sharpened.

"The money was being routed through your infrastructure, but the authorization signatures didn't match your normal patterns."

Adrian went quiet.

Evelyn continued.

"Someone was moving millions through shell companies. If federal investigators found the records as they were, every trail would lead back to you."

"Hawthorne."

"Yes."

Adrian's expression changed.

Project Hawthorne.

The same files Theo had opened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I was going to."

"When?"

"When I knew who was behind it."

"You slept with me before or after that decision?"

The question landed between them.

Evelyn's face hardened.

"Don't."

"I deserve an answer."

"You want one?"

She stepped closer.

"After."

Adrian went still.

"That night wasn't part of an investigation."

"Then what was it?"

"A mistake."

Something flashed across his face.

She immediately hated the word.

But it was safer than the truth.

Adrian looked away.

"You disappeared two weeks later."

"Because someone discovered what I knew."

"Who?"

"I never confirmed it."

"Five years and you never confirmed it?"

"I was pregnant, Adrian. My priority changed."

He looked back at her.

"What happened?"

Evelyn sat down.

For the first time, the weight of five years showed on her face.

"I found an authorization key buried in the transaction records. It belonged to someone inside the Moretti organization."

"Whose?"

"It had been masked."

"That's possible?"

"Not easily."

"Who had the access?"

"You. Nico. Vincent. Two finance executives."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"One of those executives died."

"Three months after I left."

"The other went to prison."

"I know."

"That leaves—"

"You, Nico, and Vincent."

Silence.

Adrian stared at her.

"You thought it was me."

"At first."

That answer hurt more than he expected.

"And then?"

"I received the ultrasound photograph."

"What photograph?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Mine."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"Someone had accessed my medical records."

She swallowed.

"The image was printed and left inside my apartment."

"What was written on it?"

Evelyn's voice became quieter.

"Disappear, or your son never gets born."

Adrian's face emptied.

No anger.

That was worse.

"Where is it?"

"I kept it."

"Show me."

Evelyn retrieved a sealed envelope from the drive case.

She handed it to him.

Adrian pulled out the faded ultrasound print.

On the back, five words.

DISAPPEAR OR HE NEVER GETS BORN.

His fingers tightened.

"You had this for five years."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I didn't know whether the person who sent it was standing beside you."

Adrian looked at her.

"You thought I could have threatened my own child?"

"I didn't know you were his father when the threat was sent."

That stopped him.

"The timing?"

"I hadn't told anyone."

"Except?"

"My doctor."

"And?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"One person."

"Who?"

She looked at him.

"Vincent."

The room went silent.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"My uncle?"

"He came to see me two days before I disappeared."

"Why?"

"He said you knew about my investigation."

"I didn't."

"I know that now."

"What did Vincent say?"

"That you considered me a liability."

Adrian stared at her.

"He told me to leave New York."

Something cold settled inside him.

"And you believed him."

"Then I found the ultrasound photograph."

Adrian looked down at the threat.

Five years.

Five years of hunting Evelyn.

Five years of believing she had betrayed him.

Five years in which Vincent had stood beside him and encouraged every search.

Adrian's phone was in his hand before Evelyn realized it.

"Nico."

He answered immediately.

"What?"

"Where is Vincent?"

A pause.

"Moretti Tower. Why?"

"Don't let him leave."

"Adrian?"

"Don't tell him anything."

He ended the call.

Evelyn stood.

"You don't know it's him."

"No."

Adrian slipped the photograph into his jacket.

"But I'm going to find out."

From the hallway came a small voice.

"You said eleven minutes."

Both adults turned.

Theo stood there.

He had heard enough.

His face was pale.

"Mom?"

Evelyn walked toward him.

"Theo—"

"Someone wanted me dead before I was born?"

She stopped.

He looked at Adrian.

"Because of you?"

Adrian couldn't lie.

"Maybe."

Theo swallowed.

Then looked at his mother.

"And you ran because of me?"

Evelyn crouched.

"I ran for you."

Theo's eyes filled, but he refused to cry.

Adrian recognized that too.

He crouched beside them.

Theo looked between his parents.

Then said something neither expected.

"Then we stop running."
