"The Maid Who Locked Down the Mafia Boss’s Mansion" Chapter 10 — The Empire at the Table
Don Romano came to the table without a gun.
At 6:58 p.m., he entered the forty-third-floor boardroom of Romano Holdings wearing a black suit over fresh bandages. Twelve directors sat beneath a ceiling of smoked glass. Vincent occupied the chair at the opposite end.
Emma walked beside Don in a simple navy dress borrowed from Rachel Kim.
Every head turned toward the maid Vincent had blamed on live television.
“You brought her,” Vincent said.
“She chose to come,” Don replied.
The distinction was not lost on Emma.
Rachel waited downstairs with federal teams positioned near the ballroom, loading docks, and Red Hook warehouse. Ben monitored the encrypted manifests from a surveillance van. Marcus and Rosa guarded Grace at a separate location known to only three people.
Or so they believed.
Vincent’s attorney activated the boardroom screen. Photographs of the damaged estate appeared, followed by Don’s medical report and a carefully edited clip of him firing into the dining-room ceiling.
“Don Romano has become a threat to the company,” the attorney said. “His obsession with an unverified recording and his relationship with an employee demonstrate impaired judgment.”
One director looked at Emma. “Were you hired to provide domestic services?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mr. Romano conceal that he hired you to locate your fugitive brother?”
“Yes.”
Vincent leaned back, satisfied.
“Did he confine you inside his residence?”
“During an active assassination attempt.”
“Please answer yes or no.”
Emma looked down the table. “That is how men like Vincent survive. They take one true fact, cut away everything around it, and demand a yes or no.”
The attorney objected.
“This is not a courtroom,” Don said.
“Not yet,” Emma replied.
She placed Angela’s red folder on the table.
Vincent’s composure cracked.
Don opened it. “These manifests show Romano trucks transporting weapons and human beings under charitable exemptions. The orders carry my authorization.”
Several directors began speaking at once.
Vincent smiled again. “At last, you admit it.”
“I admit the system was mine. The code was mine. The ports were mine.” Don looked at each director in turn. “And I admit that refusing to examine how my power was used made me responsible for what grew beneath it.”
Emma watched shock move around the table.
Don Romano had survived by never offering an enemy his throat.
Now he did it deliberately.
“Effective immediately,” he continued, “I surrender control of the illegal freight, gambling, and collection operations associated with this company. Romano Holdings will provide complete records to the United States Attorney’s Office.”
Vincent rose. “You cannot surrender what belongs to the family.”
“There it is,” Emma said. “Not denial. Ownership.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Rachel entered with two federal agents. “Vincent Romano, step away from the table.”
Vincent’s attorney stood. “On what charge?”
“Conspiracy, kidnapping, witness tampering, trafficking, illegal arms transport, and murder. We can discuss the longer list downstairs.”
Vincent did not run.
He looked at Don with something close to pity. “You think handing them your empire makes you clean?”

“No,” Don said. “It makes the truth available.”
Rachel’s phone rang before the agents reached Vincent.
Her expression changed.
“Kim.” She listened, then looked at Emma. “Grace’s vehicle never reached the second safe location.”
Don moved so fast his chair struck the wall.
Vincent smiled.
An agent grabbed him. He twisted free, pulled a thin ceramic blade from his belt, and drove it into the fire-control panel.
The lights died.
Emergency alarms screamed. Sprinklers discharged across the boardroom. In the confusion, glass shattered near the service corridor.
By the time backup power returned, Vincent was gone.
Don seized Rachel’s phone. “Where is Grace?”
Marcus answered through static. “Motorcade was hit under the FDR. Rosa and I were separated. They took the decoy car.”
“Grace?”
“She changed vehicles before we left Yonkers. She was with Rosa.”
Rosa’s voice came over another line, breathless. “We were safe. Then Grace received a message from Emma’s phone.”
Emma checked her purse.
Her phone was missing.
“What message?” she asked.
“It said Ben had been shot in the ballroom kitchen. Grace ran before I could stop her. One of our own drivers took her.”
Don turned toward Emma, devastation sharpening into accusation before he forced it away.
She saw the effort. Trust was not instinct for him. It was a decision made under pressure.
“Vincent wants the trust shares,” she said. “But he also wants the room to watch Don fail.”
Music began below them.
The gala.
Hundreds of guests were entering the ballroom.
Emma looked at Angela’s recorder. “He’ll bring Grace here.”
Rachel ordered agents to seal every exit without alarming the crowd. Don, Emma, and Marcus descended through the service stairs.
The ballroom glittered with crystal, white roses, and television cameras. Vincent stood on the stage beneath the Saint Catherine Relief logo.
One arm encircled Grace’s shoulders.
His blade rested beneath her hair.
The crowd applauded, believing the appearance was part of the program.
“Smile,” Vincent whispered to Grace.
She stared at Don across the room.
Don stopped behind the last row of tables. Marcus disappeared toward the lighting booth. Federal agents blended into the exits.
Vincent lifted a microphone. “Tonight, the Romano family begins again.”
Emma saw the remote control in his left hand. The same black shape Grace had drawn beside Angela’s car.
Rachel murmured through Emma’s earpiece. “Possible explosive trigger. We need him to release it.”
Don started forward.
Emma caught his wrist. “He expects you.”
“He has my daughter.”
“And Angela taught us how to make him talk.”
Emma stepped into the center aisle holding the recorder.
“Vincent.”
The microphone carried his laugh. “The maid arrives.”
“Angela left you a message.”
His eyes fixed on the recorder.
Emma pressed play.
Angela’s voice filled the ballroom. “Vincent moved three containers through Pier Forty-Eight under the Saint Catherine Relief account.”
Guests stopped smiling. Cameras swung toward the stage.
Vincent tightened his hold on Grace. “Turn it off.”
“She copied everything,” Emma said. “Including your plan to replace Don.”
“Angela understood nothing.”
“She understood you were afraid of her.”
“I was never afraid of Angela.”
“Then why did you kill her?”
The room went silent.
Vincent’s face changed. “Because she would have destroyed what my father and I built.”
The confession traveled through every microphone in the ballroom.
Grace drove her heel down on Vincent’s foot.
He jerked. The blade moved away from her throat.
Don ran.
Vincent lifted the remote.
Emma hurled the recorder. It struck his hand, and the remote skidded across the stage.
Marcus killed the stage lights. Don reached Grace in the darkness and covered her with his body.
A single shot cracked.
When the lights returned, Vincent lay beside the podium with Rachel’s agents over him. Blood darkened his shoulder. His hand was empty.
Marcus held up the remote. “It controls the loading-dock doors. No explosives.”
Across the ballroom, frightened guests slowly lowered themselves from beneath the tables. The cameras kept recording.
Vincent had used their fear as his final weapon.
Don knelt on the stage, holding Grace’s face between his hands. “Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
Emma climbed the steps. Grace reached for her without releasing her father.
The three of them stayed together while agents handcuffed Vincent and cameras broadcast the fall of the Romano empire.
