"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Cameras" Chapter 1 — The Camera Caught the Wrong Person
The first thing Sadie Quinn learned about Julian Corsini was that he never raised his voice.
He didn't have to.
On her first morning at the Corsini estate, she moved the newspaper beside his coffee so the business section faced up.
Julian looked at it.
Then at her.
"The crossword goes on top."
Sadie froze with the coffee pot still in her hand.
"Excuse me?"
"I do it first."
That was it.
No smile. No explanation.
Julian went back to his coffee.
Sadie stared at the forty-six-year-old man sitting at the end of a breakfast table long enough to host a minor diplomatic summit.
"Good to know," she muttered.
His eyes lifted.
Sadie smiled sweetly.
"I said, good morning."
One corner of his mouth almost moved.
Almost.
She had taken the live-in housekeeping job because debt had a funny way of making dangerous men seem reasonable.
The salary was nearly twice what she'd made at a boutique hotel in Back Bay. She got a furnished apartment above the garage, meals, health insurance, paid vacation, and enough money left over each month to start digging herself out of the hole she'd spent years pretending wasn't that deep.
There was only one problem.
Her employer was Julian Corsini.
Nobody in Boston called Julian a gangster to his face.
They called him a businessman.
Corsini Holdings owned shipping interests, construction companies, nightclubs, commercial real estate, and a private security firm.
People whispered about the rest.
Sadie had decided whispers didn't pay her credit-card bills.
For the first two weeks, the job was almost disappointingly normal.
Then the train ticket disappeared.
It had been framed above the fireplace in the west sitting room.
Sadie was dusting the mantel when she noticed the empty rectangle on the wall.
The silver candlesticks were still there.
So was a small Degas sketch that Sadie had been terrified to clean after Maggie O'Connor informed her what it was worth.
Only the ticket was gone.
Martin Doyle arrived within minutes.
At fifty-two, Julian's head of security had the permanent expression of a man who believed everyone was lying until proven otherwise.
He checked the windows.
The doors.
The security logs.
"No forced entry," Martin said.
Julian stood in front of the empty frame.
"What else?"
"Nothing."
"The silver?"
"Untouched."
"The drawing?"
"Still there."
Julian's face changed.
It wasn't fear.
Sadie would later realize fear would have been less disturbing.
Recognition.
"They didn't come here to rob me."
That evening, Maggie found Sadie eating leftover lemon cake in the kitchen.
"That's number five," she said.
Sadie lowered her fork.
"Number five what?"
"Thing that's gone missing."
Maggie began counting on her fingers.
"A cheap tie clip. Matchbook from some seafood place in Revere that closed twenty years ago. One cuff link. Old record sleeve with the corner ripped off. Now the train ticket."
Sadie frowned.
"That's what someone's stealing?"
"Apparently."

"There's a painting upstairs worth more than my entire bloodline."
"Two of them."
"And somebody stole a matchbook?"
Maggie nodded.
"Mr. Corsini kept every one of those things for more than twenty years."
Three days later, technicians from Corsini Security spent the afternoon inside the mansion.
Sadie assumed they were upgrading the alarm system.
Nobody mentioned hidden cameras.
That was unfortunate.
Because on Friday night, the washing machine in the basement tried to drown her.
Sadie was sorting linens when a hose came loose.
Water exploded across the floor.
She lunged for the shutoff valve, slipped, soaked her uniform, and somehow managed to lock the key to her apartment inside the pocket of the dress she'd thrown into the industrial washer.
Her phone was upstairs.
Her spare key was with the property manager, who lived forty minutes away.
Sadie stood ankle-deep in water wearing a camisole and shorts and considered every decision that had led her to this moment.
Then she saw the laundry basket.
Freshly pressed men's shirts.
"No."
She stared at them.
"No, Sadie."
Five seconds later, she was wearing one.
Julian's white dress shirt fell nearly to her knees. The sleeves swallowed half her hands.
She looked ridiculous.
And strangely, wonderfully free.
The mansion was silent when she crossed the living room on her way toward the kitchen.
Then she saw the record player.
Sadie stopped.
There was an old soul record beside it.
She hadn't danced properly in nineteen years.
Once, she'd taken real classes.
Not Saturday-afternoon-for-fun classes.
Auditions. Rehearsals. Blisters. Ice packs. Dreams that had felt so real she could almost touch them.
Then her mother got sick.
Money disappeared.
Sadie got a job.
Then another.
And somewhere along the way, she learned to tell people she'd "grown out of" dancing.
It sounded better than admitting she'd never stopped missing it.
She put the record on.
Just one song.
That was the deal.
She started carefully.
Then the old instincts returned.
Sadie slid across the polished floor in her socks.
She spun beneath the chandelier, nearly collided with an antique side table, recovered dramatically, and bowed to a portrait of some dead Corsini ancestor.
Then she grabbed a wooden spoon from the kitchen.
It became a microphone.
She sang badly.
She danced worse.
She laughed harder than she had in months.
When the song ended, Sadie performed an absurd final turn, threw one arm into the air, and bowed to an audience of antique chairs.
Three floors above her, Julian Corsini watched all four minutes and eleven seconds.
Then he played the recording again.
Sadie learned that part the next morning.
She walked into the breakfast room carrying coffee.
A small white card rested beside Julian's plate.
Her name was written across it in his precise handwriting.
SADIE.
Her stomach dropped.
Julian took a sip of coffee.
"Read it."
She picked up the card.
The first line made every drop of blood leave her face.
You missed a step at 2:47.
Sadie slowly looked up.
Julian's expression was unreadable.
"You have cameras."
"I have a thief."
"You watched me?"
"The camera watched you."
"That's not better."
"And that's my favorite shirt."
Sadie closed her eyes.
"Please fire me."
"No."
"Then kill me."
Something astonishing happened.
Julian almost smiled.
Then the amusement disappeared.
He reached beside his chair and placed an old photograph on the table.
"There's something else."
Sadie looked down.
Three young people stood outside a waterfront warehouse.
A young Julian.
A dark-haired woman she didn't recognize.
And a skinny man with a crooked grin Sadie hadn't seen since childhood.
Her fingers went cold.
"Where did you get this?"
Julian didn't answer.
Sadie picked up the photograph.
"That's my uncle."
"I know."
Her head snapped up.
"How?"
Julian leaned back.
"What's his name?"
"You already know his name."
"I want to hear you say it."
Sadie's throat tightened.
"Daniel Quinn."
Silence settled over the breakfast room.
"Tell me why my uncle is standing next to you."
Julian looked at the photograph for a long moment.
Then at Sadie.
"Because twenty-three years ago, your uncle saved my life."
