"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Cameras" Chapter 4 — What Happened in Charlestown

Claire arrived at the estate before noon.

She walked into Julian's study wearing a camel coat and an expression that suggested everyone else was wasting her time.

Then she saw Sadie.

Claire stopped.

"Who are you?"

"Sadie Quinn."

The color left Claire's face.

Julian closed the door.

"Sit down."

Claire ignored him.

"Quinn?"

Sadie nodded.

"Daniel was my uncle."

Claire gripped the back of a chair.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she looked at Julian.

"You brought her here?"

"I didn't know who she was when I hired her."

"You expect me to believe that?"

Sadie stepped between them verbally before the siblings could explode.

"Actually, he didn't hire me personally. Human resources did. And I'd really appreciate it if someone would explain why my missing uncle is apparently the third person in your family."

Claire's eyes filled.

That surprised Sadie more than anything.

"I loved him."

"I know."

Claire looked at Julian.

"He told you?"

"Eventually."

Claire sat.

The story came out slowly.

In 2003, Daniel worked in freight documentation at Corsini Shipping.

He discovered irregular shipments connected to shell companies.

Money was being moved through construction invoices and shipping contracts.

Daniel believed someone inside the Corsini organization was stealing millions.

"From your family?" Sadie asked.

Claire shook her head.

"Through the family."

Daniel copied documents.

He planned to take them to someone he trusted.

On August 18, he went to a warehouse in Charlestown.

The building caught fire.

Daniel disappeared.

"No body?" Sadie asked.

"Never," Julian said.

"Then why did everyone say he died?"

"Because there was enough blood at the scene to convince the police he'd been badly injured."

Sadie stared at him.

"And you were there."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"I arrived after the fire started."

"Daniel saved you."

"The roof structure collapsed. He got me out."

"And then?"

"I lost consciousness."

"When you woke up?"

"He was gone."

Sadie looked at Claire.

"Why didn't you tell my family?"

"I tried."

"My mother says Daniel disappeared because he trusted you."

Claire flinched.

Julian turned away.

Sadie noticed.

"What?"

Neither sibling answered.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Claire looked at her brother.

"Tell her."

"Claire."

"She deserves to know."

Julian's face went cold.

Claire's voice broke.

"The night Daniel disappeared, he and Julian fought."

Sadie felt the room shrink.

"What kind of fight?"

"Physical."

She looked at Julian.

"You told me you hurt him once."

"That was the night."

"Why?"

"Because he was going to the warehouse alone."

"You punched him to protect him?"

"He wasn't listening."

"That's your defense?"

"No."

Julian's answer was immediate.

"It's what happened."

Sadie remembered her mother's voice.

Leave that house.

Suddenly the warning felt different.

"Did Daniel leave that warehouse alive?"

Julian looked directly at her.

"I don't know."

Sadie laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient."

His face changed.

"You think I killed him."

"I think you've had twenty-three years to decide what version of this story people hear."

Claire stood.

"Sadie—"

"No."

Sadie backed toward the door.

"I came here to clean a house. Now somebody is breaking into my apartment, my mother is terrified, and I find out my boss beat my uncle hours before he disappeared."

She looked at Julian.

"I'm leaving."

Julian didn't stop her.

That hurt more than she expected.

Sadie packed one suitcase.

She had almost reached her car when Julian appeared outside the garage.

He didn't block her.

He simply held out a brass key.

Sadie stared at it.

"What's that?"

"The reason I never stopped looking for Daniel."

"I don't want another clue."

"Then throw it away."

He placed the key in her palm.

"The basement. North corridor. Last door."

Sadie looked at him.

"What am I going to find?"

"Everything I've been hiding for twenty-three years."

She should have driven away.

Instead, twenty minutes later, she stood in front of a steel door beneath the Corsini mansion.

The key turned.

Lights flickered on.

Sadie stepped inside.

And forgot how to breathe.

The walls were covered with Daniel Quinn.

Photographs.

Maps.

Police reports.

Newspaper clippings.

Private-investigator files.

Dozens of folders marked with years.

2004.

2005.

2006.

All the way to the present.

Julian had never stopped looking.

Sadie approached a corkboard.

A photograph showed a man leaving a bus station in Albany in 2007.

Another showed someone resembling Daniel outside a motel in Maine.

Every possible sighting had been investigated.

Every lead documented.

On the center wall were photographs of the five stolen objects.

Red lines connected them to dates, addresses, and names.

Sadie heard Julian enter behind her.

"You did all this?"

"Yes."

"For twenty-three years?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Julian looked at Daniel's photograph.

"Because he saved my life."

Sadie waited.

Julian's voice became quieter.

"And because I was supposed to save his."

She turned toward him.

"What are those objects?"

"I didn't know for years."

"And now?"

"I think Daniel gave them to my mother for a reason."

Sadie moved closer to the board.

Train ticket.

Matchbook.

Tie clip.

Cuff link.

Record sleeve.

Dates.

Numbers.

Scratches.

Serial codes.

Not memories.

Pieces.

Sadie suddenly understood.

"They're a code."

Julian nodded.

"That's what I think."

"Then whoever is stealing them—"

"Is trying to solve it before we do."

Martin appeared in the doorway.

"Julian."

Something in his voice made both of them turn.

"We recovered more footage."

"Claire?"

"No."

Martin held up the tablet.

"Someone accessed the camera system remotely during every theft."

Julian's eyes hardened.

"From where?"

Martin hesitated.

"Corsini Holdings."

"Whose credentials?"

Another pause.

Then Martin said the name.

"Richard Hale."

Julian went completely still.

Sadie recognized it from the corporate directory.

Richard Hale.

The Corsini family's attorney.

The man who had handled their contracts, estates, lawsuits, and secrets for more than twenty-five years.

Sadie looked back at the wall.

At Daniel's face.

At five worthless objects someone was willing to break into her home to recover.

"What did my uncle find?"

Julian stared at Richard Hale's name on the screen.

When he answered, there was no uncertainty left in his voice.

"Something Richard thought he'd buried twenty-three years ago."
