"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Cameras" Chapter 6 — The Room He Never Opened
Julian didn't believe her.
Not at first.
He stood in the underground investigation room with Claire's confession playing through Sadie's phone.
When the recording ended, he said nothing.
Sadie had asked Claire's permission to record their second conversation. Claire had agreed, insisting that Julian finally deserved the truth.
"She saw him six days after the fire," Sadie said.
Julian stared at Daniel's photograph.
"Yes."
"Alive."
"I heard her."
"Then we need to change the entire timeline."
Julian turned away.
Sadie recognized the expression.
It was the same one he'd worn when the train ticket disappeared.
The look of a man trying to keep an entire building from collapsing through sheer force of will.
She stepped closer.
"Julian."
"He was alive."
"Yes."
"Claire knew."
"She was scared."
"He let me search for him."
Sadie hesitated.
"We don't know what happened after that."
Julian suddenly slammed his hand against the desk.
Sadie flinched.
He immediately stepped back.
"I'm sorry."
She studied him.
He looked genuinely ashamed.
"You're allowed to be angry," she said. "Just don't make me afraid to stand next to you."
Julian closed his eyes.
"Understood."
It was the first time Sadie had ever heard him apologize.
Martin arrived with a newly recovered report.
"Richard's credentials were used from a private server connected to Corsini Holdings," he explained. "But Ethan thinks someone cloned the authentication token."
"Meaning?" Sadie asked.
"Someone could have accessed the system while making it look like Richard."
Julian frowned.
"Who had access?"
"Richard. His senior assistant. Three members of corporate IT."
"And you," Sadie said.
Martin looked at her.
"Yes."
Julian's gaze sharpened.
Martin didn't move.
"I've worked for you for eighteen years," he said.
"That doesn't answer the question."
"No," Martin agreed. "It doesn't."
The room fell silent.
Sadie watched the two men.
For the first time, she understood something about Julian's life.
He couldn't simply trust someone.
Every friendship came with a security assessment.
Every favor might become leverage.
Every mistake could cost someone their life.
She suddenly felt exhausted on his behalf.
Then she remembered the threatening note on her bed.
Maybe sympathy could wait.
That afternoon, Sadie went through Evelyn's belongings again.
She found old letters, family photographs, birthday cards, and a handwritten list of recipes.
Nothing obviously important.
Until she noticed a small envelope tucked inside a cookbook.
It was addressed to Daniel.
The postmark was dated September 2003.
Three weeks after the fire.
Sadie's heart began pounding.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Daniel,
You were right about the records. I should have believed you sooner.
I have kept everything exactly where you told me.
If you cannot come back, I will make sure Julian knows the truth.
Please be careful.
Evelyn.
Sadie read the letter three times.
Then she ran.
Julian was in his study when she burst through the door.
"Your mother knew Daniel survived."
He stood immediately.

"What?"
She handed him the letter.
Julian read it.
Then read it again.
His face drained of color.
"My mother wrote this."
"Three weeks after the fire."
"She told me she hadn't heard from him."
"She lied."
Julian stared at the handwriting.
Sadie watched him struggle with the realization.
His mother had died eleven years earlier.
There was nobody left to confront.
Nobody left to explain.
Only the letter.
And twenty-three years of silence.
"Why would she do that?" he whispered.
Sadie didn't have an answer.
But she had an idea.
"Maybe she wasn't protecting Daniel from you."
Julian looked up.
"Maybe she was protecting you from whoever was looking for him."
That night, the mansion was unusually quiet.
Sadie couldn't sleep.
She went downstairs and found another record beside the turntable.
Etta James.
She smiled despite herself.
"Subtle, Mr. Corsini."
She put it on.
The music filled the living room.
Sadie began moving slowly.
Not the ridiculous performance from her first night.
This time, she danced properly.
She stretched one arm toward the ceiling, turned, and let her body remember movements her mind had spent nineteen years trying to forget.
Halfway through the song, she stopped.
She looked directly at the hidden camera.
"If you're watching, you owe me a drink."
A voice answered from the doorway.
"I brought the bottle."
Sadie spun around.
Julian stood there holding two glasses and an expensive bottle of bourbon.
She pressed a hand to her chest.
"Do you always sneak up on women dancing in your house?"
"Only the ones wearing my clothes."
"I'm wearing my own clothes tonight."
"I noticed."
Something in his voice made her cheeks warm.
He set the glasses on the side table.
Sadie approached.
"How many times did you watch that video?"
"Which video?"
"Julian."
He poured the bourbon.
"Twice."
She narrowed her eyes.
"You're lying."
"Three times."
"Julian."
He handed her a glass.
"I had to review the security footage."
"For four minutes and eleven seconds?"
"Thoroughly."
Sadie laughed.
For a few moments, the investigation disappeared.
There was only the music.
The warm light.
And a man who looked at her as though he'd forgotten how to look away.
Julian held out his hand.
Sadie stared at it.
"Are you asking me to dance?"
"No."
"Then what are you doing?"
"Making a questionable decision."
She placed her hand in his.
He drew her closer.
Not too close.
Just enough.
They moved awkwardly at first.
Julian was clearly more comfortable running a criminal empire than following a rhythm.
"You're terrible at this," Sadie whispered.
"I've been told."
"By who?"
"Nobody who survived the conversation."
She burst out laughing.
Julian smiled.
A real smile.
And suddenly Sadie understood why people might fall in love with dangerous men.
Not because they were dangerous.
Because sometimes, beneath all that armor, there was someone who looked almost painfully human.
The music ended.
Neither moved.
Then Julian's phone rang.
Martin.
Julian answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"What did you find?"
Sadie watched the warmth disappear from his face.
Martin spoke for nearly a minute.
Julian looked at her.
"We've identified the first part of Daniel's code."
Sadie's pulse quickened.
"What does it say?"
Julian lowered the phone.
"Richard Hale."
