"The Baby He Called a Lie" Chapter 5 — Terms Written by Her
Chapter 5 — Terms Written by Her
Nina spread three documents across her desk: Mara's incident report, the surveillance invoice Damon had located, and a letter drafted for Vale Logistics.
"We can demand that they stop contacting you," she said. "We can also ask the hospital and clinic to preserve their records. None of this requires you to negotiate your pregnancy with his family."
"Good," Mara said. "Because they aren't invited."
Nina slid over a fourth page. It listed conditions for any contact with Adrian: no private investigators, no uninvited visits, no access to medical information, and no payments or gifts made on Mara's behalf without agreement. Any discussion of future parenting would go through their lawyers until Mara chose otherwise.
Mara took a pen and added a line. "He must correct what he told his family about me. He doesn't need to announce my pregnancy. He can tell them that calling me a liar was his mistake."
"That's personal," Nina said.
"So was Celia showing up at my job."
Nina kept the line. Mara signed the instructions, then called the loan servicer again. She wanted a written accounting of the third-party payment and asked what options she had for disputing an unauthorized payment made in her name. She did not pretend it could be erased by anger alone.
At the hospital, she met the security supervisor and reviewed the available entrance footage. The man in the delivery jacket had entered twice the previous week, never carrying a parcel. She saved the visit times and asked security to preserve the recordings. The supervisor agreed and told her to call immediately if she saw him again.
By evening, Mara had evidence organized by date instead of scattered across her phone. It made her feel less hunted.
Adrian received Nina's conditions in his office. He read every line, including the one Mara had added by hand.
"You don't have to sign that last part," Damon said.
"She asked me to tell the truth."
"Victor won't like it."
"I know."
Adrian signed. Then he called the executive who had arranged the proposed building purchase and ordered the offer withdrawn if the seller would release it. He demanded written confirmation that no document suggested Mara had accepted a transfer. For the loan payment, he gave Nina the payer's company name and full transaction records, and agreed to follow the resolution Mara chose through her attorney.
None of it brought him closer to Mara. That was not the purpose of the conditions.
Damon remained in the doorway after the call. "There's something I should have told you fourteen years ago."
Adrian looked up. "About the attack?"
"About the hospital. Victor brought in a consultant on the second night. She took a sealed envelope from Dr. Harlan's office. I was new. Victor said it was insurance paperwork."
"Did you see what was inside?"
"No. I photographed the handoff because it wasn't on my security log. I kept the photo when he told me to delete it."

"Why keep it from me?"
Damon held his gaze. "You believed every word Victor said. I thought I'd lose my job before I got you to look at it. Then I let too much time pass."
Adrian wanted to be furious. He was. He also knew what he had done to Mara with far less evidence.
"Send the original file to Nina," he said. "Tell her when and how you took it."
"It may implicate me."
"Then tell her that too."
The following afternoon, Nina showed Mara the photograph in her office. Victor's face was clear. Dr. Harlan's was partly obscured, but the name stitched on her coat could be read when the image was enlarged.
"It proves they exchanged an envelope," Nina said. "It doesn't prove what was in it. Damon says the original image still has its date and location information."
Mara considered the connection. A falsified diagnosis could explain why Adrian had believed he could not have children. It could not explain why Victor's people had begun watching her before Adrian's new appointment.
"There are two questions," she said. "What happened fourteen years ago, and what do they want from me now?"
Nina nodded. "That's how I'm treating it."
Mara asked whether she could obtain a copy of the surveillance report. Nina gave her one with the courier details attached. A charge on the invoice referred to a warehouse called Pier Nine. Mara recognized the address: it belonged to an old Vale Logistics property near the river. She had passed it on the bus often enough to remember the sign.
She called Adrian with Nina on the line.
"Did you know someone was using Pier Nine?" she asked.
"It's been closed for two years."
"The person following me billed a visit there last week."
"I'll check the company access records."
"Ask through your lawyer. If someone inside the company is involved, I want a copy before they can alter anything."
"All right."
He did not offer to take charge. Mara appreciated the restraint and resented that such a small courtesy still surprised her.
"I signed your conditions," he said.
"I know. Nina sent them."
"I told Celia and Victor I had accused you without proof. Celia has been told not to approach you again."
Mara looked at Nina. "Thank you for correcting it."
There was a silence. Adrian had once made silence feel intimate. Now it was simply a space in which she could choose whether to stay.
"I don't trust you yet," she said.
"I understand."
"Then you'll understand why Nina and I are keeping our own copies."
After the call, Nina forwarded a preservation request to Vale Logistics and the old hospital for the access and audit records. Mara left with copies of everything. On the way home, she stopped at the hospital security desk and confirmed the delivery-jacket man's image had been retained.
She had spent months trying to build a life without Adrian. She was not about to surrender that work because their enemies might overlap.
That night, Damon sent Nina the original photograph. Minutes later, his access badge stopped working at Vale Logistics.
