"The Dance He Almost Took Away" Chapter 10: The Next Dance
Chapter 10: The Next Dance
“The first vote concerns the course,” Leonard said.
Clare sat with her hands beneath the table so no one could see her folding the corner of her own agenda. The meeting room was small enough that she could hear the second hand of the wall clock.
Diane asked about the two pending students. Clare explained that neither was included in the minimum budget. Sixteen had registered; if the other two joined, the surplus would go toward substitute coverage and fee assistance within the program.
“And if enrollment falls below sixteen next term?” Leonard asked.
“We review it before accepting new payments. I won't keep a class open by counting students who aren't there.”
Marisol showed the board the center's projected room and administrative costs. Nora's substitute rate appeared as its own line. Clare had not hidden the expense to make her plan look cleaner.
“I'm satisfied,” Diane said. “We asked for a course that could stand on its own. This one can.”
The board approved a twelve-week pilot, with Clare as instructor and a review before renewal. She had a room on Thursdays while the center could safely open it, and the alternate small room for short interruptions. The approval was conditional on the center's ordinary access and safety rules; it was also real.
Leonard asked how soon she could send a written welcome to the sixteen registered students. “Tonight,” Clare said. “I'll include the start date, installments, the refund policy and a reminder that the smaller room is a temporary option.”
“We'll put the course on the center's calendar once Marisol checks the notice,” he said.
Clare crossed out the provisional date in her folder and wrote the approved one. A student who had asked whether the class was real would now receive a date, a price and an address. No amount of applause in a meeting could have pleased her more.
Clare wrote the decision down. She wanted to tell Rosa and Henry immediately, but Leonard was moving to the second vote.
“The construction request,” he said. “Exclusive access to the ballroom is off the table.”
The independent review of the outside lot was complete. Diane went through its conditions: a revised vehicle route, secured materials, and clear access to the center in the evenings. The contractor had accepted the added work, though it would change the timetable.
“What if they decide later they need the ballroom?” Leonard asked Ethan.
Ethan sat at the end of the table as the developer's representative. “They can submit another request. Until the board approves it, they cannot use the room.”
“And the roof?”
“The center's responsibility,” Marisol said. “We have two repair estimates and a separate funding discussion scheduled. Neither Clare's fees nor this construction agreement are being used to disguise that cost.”
Clare felt the relief arrive cautiously. No one had repaired a roof in an hour. They had, at last, said aloud who had to decide what.

The board approved the lot arrangement with Diane's safety conditions. It directed Marisol to publish an access notice for the center's users before any work began. Clare asked whether instructors would receive notice of schedule changes directly. Leonard added that to the minutes.
When the meeting ended, Marisol held out her hand. “Congratulations on the pilot.”
Clare shook it. “Thank you for letting me see the real budget.”
“You asked for it,” Marisol said. “That made my job easier.”
Outside, Henry was on a bench with Evelyn. Clare had told him not to spend the morning pacing the hall, and he had compromised by pacing outside. He stood when she appeared.
“Well?”
“Twelve weeks,” she said. “And Thursday stays Thursday.”
Henry opened his arms for a hug, then remembered she was carrying a folder. He took the folder and hugged her anyway. Evelyn asked about the roof before celebrating; Clare liked her more for it.
“Still needs funding,” Clare said. “We have a backup room for short closures. No one has promised more than that.”
Henry returned her folder. “Then I won't tell anyone the roof is fixed. I'll tell them you're teaching.”
“You sound like the woman who taught Henry not to rush a turn,” Evelyn said.
“I don't rush turns,” Henry objected.
“You've been rushing one for fifty-three years,” she replied.
They left together for lunch, leaving Clare by the center steps. Ethan came out a few minutes later, carrying the same marked-up construction plan he'd held on Saturday. He stopped beside her but did not reach for her folder.
“You made them change the vehicle route,” she said.
Ethan showed her the marked plan. The old line crossed the path Rosa used from the bus stop. The new one ran along the far edge of the lot, with a marked pedestrian entrance kept clear after six. Diane's reviewer had identified the risk; Ethan's team had drawn the correction. Clare could see where each person's work had changed the page.
“Diane made us prove it was safe. I told the team the old route wasn't an option.”
“That cost your company time.”
“Yes.”
He didn't turn the cost into a declaration of devotion. Clare was grateful. Her course hadn't been awarded because a powerful man chose to give her a room. She had earned the board's decision, and he had fulfilled his responsibility to the center.
“What happens now?” he asked.
“I teach on Thursday. I spend the weekend making sure everyone knows when and where. Then I teach again.”
“I meant with us.”
Clare looked at him. The question had come without his father nearby to stage an introduction and without a crisis that gave them a reason to keep meeting.
“We've had coffee,” she said.
“Usually while arguing about a spreadsheet.”
“Dinner at Miller's.”
“Henry called in the middle of it.”
“He'll call in the middle of any dinner.”
Ethan smiled. “I can tell him I'll call back.”
Clare tucked her folder under her arm. “Ask me plainly.”
“Would you have dinner with me on Saturday?”
“Just us?”
“Just us.”
“No construction updates.”
“No dance lessons.”
“I didn't agree to that.”
“Then I may have a chance.”
She said yes. Ethan seemed about to take her hand, but she reached for his first. His fingers closed around hers, warm and slightly unsteady.
“I may be bad at a dinner with no agenda,” he said.
“Then we can spend the first ten minutes choosing food.”
“And the rest?”
“We can learn something neither of us has prepared.”
He laughed. The sound carried down the steps to where Henry and Evelyn were waiting for a crossing signal.
From down the sidewalk, Henry turned and called, “Are you coming to lunch?”
“No,” Ethan and Clare answered together.
Evelyn took Henry's arm and kept walking. Ethan waited until they were out of earshot.
“Next dance?” he asked.
“The next one we choose,” Clare said.
