"The Scar No One Was Meant to See" Chapter 6 — Before the Doors Open
Chapter 6 — Before the Doors Open
The false cancellation cost them forty minutes. It also gave them a recorded call.
Rebecca asked the transfer company to preserve it. The employee who took the call could not identify the speaker, but the number matched a line assigned to a Varela Freight office. Elias had access to the line. So did more than a dozen other people.
"It's a lead," Rebecca said. "Keep it that way until we know more."
Marcus produced a second file. After the ambulance left the Varela house, he had returned for Dominic's phone and the security tablet. His camera was running as he crossed the bedroom, a habit he had developed during disputed incidents involving the family's guards. Kessler and Elias were arguing in the next room. Marcus had sent the untouched clip to Rebecca that morning. She had saved the original and made a working copy for review.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Dominic asked.
"I hadn't listened to the whole thing," Marcus said. "I was trying to get your belongings out before Elias changed the locks."
"Did he know the camera was running?" Claire asked.
"He knows I wear it on duty. I don't know whether he saw it then."
Rebecca did not promise the recording would settle everything. She said investigators could evaluate how it had been made. Claire listened through headphones and heard Kessler's frightened voice beneath the house alarm. The exchange could explain why Elias had expected Dominic to remain disabled. She asked Marcus to provide the original to police, then kept the working copy Rebecca had shared with her.
Dominic's fever rose again. The attending spoke with the receiving hospital and arranged a new ambulance. Claire remained with Dominic while Leah handed over care to the day team. Nobody had asked Claire to stay; her agency shift had ended hours earlier.
"You can go home," Dominic said.
"I will when the receiving crew has the records."
"You think I'll order them around?"
"I think you'll try. They're good at ignoring you."
For the first time, he smiled. It vanished when he looked down at his legs.
"I'm afraid I won't walk again."
Claire did not offer a promise. "The surgeon will tell you what the scans show and what treatment can do. You deserve an honest answer."
"You give terrible comfort."
"I've been told."
Rebecca appeared at the door. She had obtained the payment authorization from the company records Dominic released. Elias's electronic approval appeared beside the transfer to Briar. It established that he had paid Kessler's company. It did not establish what he had purchased.
"I can ask him," Dominic said.
"You can," Rebecca replied. "I'd rather you let investigators do it."
"He's my brother. He'll lie to them."
"He may lie to you too."
Dominic looked at Claire. "He told me I was too proud to accept help. I believed him."

"You're getting help now," she said. "Let us get you out of here first."
They moved him toward the service elevator under hospital security supervision. The ward doors opened onto a quiet corridor, then the elevator carried them to the ambulance entrance. Claire walked with the chart and imaging disk. Marcus followed at a distance Rebecca had insisted upon, his hands visible, no private guards beside him.
At the exit, two men stood near the automatic doors. One wore a hospital visitor badge. The other was the contractor Marcus had identified earlier. Elias emerged from behind them.
"Dominic," he said. "I came to take you somewhere safe."
The paramedics stopped the stretcher. A hospital security officer stepped between Elias and the crew.
"You're not authorized to direct this transfer," she said.
Elias showed her his empty hands. "I'm his brother. Ask him."
"Take me to the ambulance," Dominic said.
Elias's face tightened. "You have no idea what these people are making you sign."
"I read every page."
"She got to you," Elias said, looking at Claire.
"Claire found the wound you didn't tell me about."
"That woman lost her medical license. Ask her what she did to the last patient she touched."
Claire felt the old reflex to defend herself. Then she saw the stretcher waiting beneath the emergency lights. Dominic did not need her biography. He needed the doors opened.
"Security," she said, "please clear the route. The receiving surgeon is waiting."
Elias's contractor moved in front of the automatic doors. Marcus stepped toward him, but Rebecca caught his arm.
"Let hospital security handle it," she said.
The officer called for backup. Elias leaned down close enough for Dominic to hear him.
"If you hand over those accounts, the whole company goes down. The drivers. The warehouses. People who depend on us."
"You should have thought of them before using the company to pay Kessler," Dominic replied.
Elias glanced at Rebecca. The approval record was no longer secret.
"Kessler was trying to help you," he said.
"With an operation I never agreed to?"
Elias's hand slipped beneath his coat. The security officer ordered him to show it. Marcus stopped moving. So did Claire.
"Elias," Dominic said. "Don't make this worse."
He drew a handgun.
The nearest paramedic pulled the stretcher back around the corner. Claire went with him, shielding Dominic from the open corridor. The officer took cover behind a concrete pillar and called an emergency response. No one rushed the man with the gun.
Rebecca was still exposed near the wall. Claire called to her, and Rebecca crossed into the recessed doorway by the stretcher. Marcus stayed where he could see Elias without approaching him.
"I don't want to hurt anyone," Elias said. His hand shook. "I just want my brother away from her."
"Then put the gun down," the officer said.
Claire had sent the medical evidence to Leah and Rebecca. Marcus's recording was also in the hands of the attorney, and its original was ready for police. Claire knew what hearing his own voice might do to Elias now.
"Elias," she said, "I have what you said to Kessler when you thought I was out of the room."
His gaze snapped toward her. "You weren't there."
"Marcus's camera was."
Rebecca looked sharply at Claire. Claire understood the warning: don't make claims beyond the words themselves. She held the working copy up where the security officer could see it.
"I'm playing this for the officer," she said. "Listen to it with us."
"Claire," Dominic murmured. "What did he say?"
She tapped the file. For an instant there was only the sound of the house alarm. Then Kessler's strained voice came through the speaker.
The paramedic held the stretcher steady. Across the corridor, another security officer arrived and took cover. The automatic doors kept opening and closing behind Elias, letting in gusts of cold morning air. He still had the gun in his hand. Claire kept her eyes on that hand as the recorded voices grew clear.
"The infection wasn't part of our agreement."
Elias's recorded reply began:
"I paid you to—"
