"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 2 — Thirty Days in His House
Clara entered Ricardo Moretti’s Escalade for the child, not the money.
She repeated that fact while Leo held two of her fingers and refused to release them.
Ricardo sat opposite her, making the spacious vehicle feel smaller than it was. Dante rode in front beside the driver, his bitten hand wrapped in a white napkin.
“Does he have a car seat in every vehicle?” Clara asked.
“Yes,” Ricardo said.
“Who installed this one?”
His eyebrows drew together. “Why?”
“The chest clip is too low.”
Ricardo leaned forward.
Clara moved it level with Leo’s armpits and tightened the straps.
“Like that.”
Ricardo looked toward Dante. “Check every vehicle before morning.”
Dante nodded.
It was the first time Clara saw Ricardo receive criticism without punishing the person who offered it.
Leo fell asleep before they crossed into Westchester County. Forty minutes later, iron gates opened onto an estate overlooking the Hudson River.
The stone house was not a home. It was a fortress pretending to be one.
Security cameras followed the Escalade along the drive. Men in dark coats stood beneath the portico. Beyond them, warm light glowed through windows three stories high.
Clara looked at Ricardo. “How many people live here?”
“Leo and I.”
“That wasn’t what I asked.”
“Thirty-two employees work on the property in rotating shifts.”
“And the men with guns?”
“They are included in that number.”
“That’s comforting.”
“It was not intended to be.”
Inside, a housekeeper named Mrs. Alvarez met them in the marble entry hall. She was in her late fifties, with silver threaded through her dark hair and kindness in her tired face.
Her relief at seeing Leo asleep was unmistakable.
“Mr. Moretti, his room is ready.”
“Clara will take him.”
Mrs. Alvarez glanced at Clara’s wet clothing but asked no questions. She quietly ordered another employee to bring towels and hot tea.
Clara carried Leo upstairs. His room contained a custom wooden train set, shelves of picture books, and expensive toys that looked untouched. A framed photograph stood on the dresser.
A laughing blonde woman held a baby beside a lake.
Sofia Moretti.
The empty chair at the restaurant suddenly made sense. It had been set as though Ricardo expected a ghost to join them.
Leo woke when Clara tried to place him in his bed. His eyes flew open, and his hands caught her blouse.
“No car,” he whispered.
“There’s no car.”
“No Mommy car.”
Ricardo stopped in the doorway.
Clara sat on the edge of Leo’s bed until he fell asleep again. She found a rabbit beneath the blanket and tucked it against his chest.
In the hallway, Ricardo was waiting.
“What did he mean by ‘Mommy car’?”
“He associates cars with the accident.”
“What accident?”
“My wife died when her vehicle went through a guardrail.”
“Was Leo with her?”
“No.”
“Did he see anything?”
“No.”
Ricardo answered too quickly.
Clara folded her arms. “If you want me to help him, you can’t decide which truths are convenient.”

“You are here for thirty days.”
“I haven’t agreed yet.”
He led her into a dark-paneled study. A contract waited on the desk beside a cashier’s check for ten thousand dollars.
“Half now,” Ricardo said. “Half at the end.”
Clara did not touch either.
The contract called her a child-development consultant. It provided private accommodations, meals, transportation, and medical coverage during employment. It allowed her to end the arrangement at any time but prohibited her from removing Leo from the estate without written permission.
One clause allowed Ricardo to terminate her immediately if she disclosed anything about the family.
Clara picked up a pen.
Ricardo watched her cross out a sentence.
“What are you doing?”
“Changing your contract.”
“No one changes my contracts.”
“I just did.”
She wrote in the margin: Nothing in this agreement prevents Clara Hayes from reporting suspected child abuse, neglect, or an immediate threat to Leo Moretti.
Ricardo read it.
“You believe I would hurt my son?”
“I believe good people become dangerous when they care more about secrecy than children.”
His gaze remained on her face.
Then he initialed the change.
Clara added two more conditions. No one searched her phone without cause, and she could consult an outside child therapist approved by both parties.
“You negotiate aggressively for someone who arrived with two hundred dollars,” Ricardo said.
“My bank balance doesn’t determine whether I’m right.”
Something close to approval moved through his eyes.
Clara signed.
“Thirty days. I’m not your employee outside matters involving Leo. You don’t control who I speak to. And nobody points a gun at me.”
“Do you often require that last condition?”
“I don’t usually work for alleged criminals.”
“Alleged?”
“I’m trying to be polite.”
A knock interrupted them.
Evelyn Shaw entered without waiting for permission. She wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather folder.
Her eyes moved from Clara to the contract.
“This is her?”
Ricardo’s expression darkened. “Why are you here?”
“Because someone filed an emergency petition in Westchester County Family Court.”
She placed the folder on the desk.
Clara saw Leo’s name on the first page.
Ricardo did not sit. “Who?”
“The petitioner is Gabriel Moretti.”
Something dangerous entered the room.
“My cousin has no standing.”
“He’s claiming you’re emotionally unavailable, that your residence is unsafe, and that Leo’s behavior has deteriorated since Sofia’s death.”
“He wants custody?”
“Temporary guardianship,” Evelyn said. “Which would give him access to Leo’s trust and Sofia’s voting shares while the case proceeds.”
Ricardo’s hand closed around the back of a chair.
Clara understood then. This was not only about a grieving child.
It was about control of an empire.
“How did Gabriel know what happened tonight?” Ricardo asked.
“He included an account of the restaurant incident.”
The room went quiet.
Only people inside Il Verano could know the details. Or someone inside Ricardo’s security operation had reported them immediately.
Evelyn opened another document.

“Child Protective Services may conduct an unannounced home visit. The judge has ordered a developmental evaluation. You’ll appear at a preliminary hearing in twelve days.”
“Which judge?”
“Malcolm Reed.”
Dante’s expression tightened. “Reed handled the Moretti trust dispute five years ago.”
“And ruled for Gabriel’s branch of the family,” Evelyn said.
Ricardo turned toward Clara.
She recognized the calculation in his eyes and hated it.
“No,” she said.
“I haven’t asked anything.”
“You’re about to turn my presence into evidence that your house is stable.”
Evelyn looked between them. “Who is she?”
“The first person Leo has allowed near him in months,” Ricardo said.
“And now,” he added, “she is going to help me keep my son.”
Clara stepped closer to the desk. “I’m going to help Leo. Whether that helps you depends on your behavior.”
Evelyn’s mouth twitched. “I like her.”
“That makes one of us,” Ricardo said.
The household slept uneasily. Clara was shown to a guest room across from Leo’s suite. Mrs. Alvarez brought dry clothes and explained that Sofia’s rooms remained untouched because Ricardo had never allowed anyone to pack them.
“He loved her?” Clara asked.
Mrs. Alvarez looked toward the hallway camera. “Mr. Moretti loves deeply. That has never meant he loves wisely.”
Before Clara could ask more, something struck the wall in Leo’s room.
She ran.
Leo stood in the middle of the room, staring at the open doorway. His rabbit lay on the floor. His body shook so hard that his teeth clicked.
Clara lifted him.
“What happened?”
He pointed beyond her shoulder.
“Bad man.”
Ricardo arrived with Dante and two guards.
“What bad man?” Clara asked.
Leo buried his face against her neck.
“The man Mommy said not to trust.”
Ricardo’s gaze snapped toward the empty hallway.
On the floor outside Leo’s room rested a single wet footprint.
Someone had been standing there.
