"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 7 — The Lullaby Code
Dante asked for a screwdriver.
Ricardo refused.
Clara took the device from the guard and held it where both men could see. “Someone wants you to kill each other before either of you examines this.”
“It is transmitting,” Dante said. “The green light means an active connection.”
Ricardo ordered the estate’s wireless network shut down. The light kept blinking.
“Cellular backup,” Dante said. “Remove the battery, and we lose the chance to identify the receiver.”
“How do you know?” Ricardo asked.
“Because I purchased six of them after Sofia received threats. They were supposed to track vehicles, not children.”
Dante named the vendor, the date, and the serial-number range. One device had disappeared from his office inventory two weeks before Sofia died. He had reported it internally but never told Ricardo.
“Why?” Clara asked.
“Sofia asked me not to.”
Ricardo crossed the room in two strides and struck him.
Dante hit the wall but did not fight back.
Leo screamed from the doorway.
Clara had not heard him approach. He stood in dinosaur pajamas beside Mrs. Alvarez, his face white with fear.
“Daddy bad!”
The accusation froze Ricardo.
Clara rushed to Leo, but he backed away from everyone and hid behind Mrs. Alvarez.
Ricardo lowered his hands. A thin line of blood marked Dante’s lip.
“Leo,” Ricardo said.
“No!”
The boy ran.
Clara followed him into Sofia’s suite. Leo crawled beneath the vanity and covered his ears.
She sat on the carpet without reaching for him.
“Your dad scared you.”
Leo nodded.
“He scared me too.”
Ricardo stopped outside the room.
Clara looked at him through the mirror. “He needs to hear you say what you did.”
Ricardo knelt several feet from the vanity.
“I hit Dante,” he said. “I was angry, but hitting him was wrong.”
Leo watched him from the shadows.
“Daddy sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Tell Dante.”
Ricardo closed his eyes briefly. “I will.”
Leo crawled out but went to Clara, not his father.
The cost registered on Ricardo’s face.
Downstairs, he apologized to Dante in front of the same guards who had witnessed the blow.
It was not elegant. It was real.
Dante accepted with a nod, then opened his purchasing records on an isolated computer. All six trackers appeared. Five had been deactivated. The sixth—the one under Leo’s crib—had connected every night at 2:14 a.m. to a relay near White Plains.
“Can we trace the final receiver?” Clara asked.
“Only if it connects again.”
The device blinked.
Dante copied the signal. It led to an account registered to a company named Aria Child Services.
Evelyn searched the state corporate database. “The company dissolved three years ago. Its registered agent was Malcolm Reed’s brother-in-law.”
“The judge,” Clara said.
“Or someone using his paper trail,” Dante cautioned.
Ricardo studied him. “What did Sofia ask you to hide?”
Dante’s shoulders dropped.
“She believed someone had copied your security credentials. She asked me to build a second access log that no one inside the house could alter.”
“Where is it?”
“She never told me. She said Leo would remember the password if anything happened to her.”
They all looked toward the child.
Clara remembered the music-box cylinder from Box 317.
She carried it to Sofia’s carousel music box and replaced the original cylinder. When she turned the key, the familiar lullaby began, but six notes repeated in an unnatural pattern.
Leo hummed along.
At the repeated notes, he sang words instead.
“Blue moon, red door, Daddy comes home.”
Dante typed the phrase into Sofia’s encrypted cloud archive.
The screen opened.
Access logs filled the monitor. Someone had entered the north wing on the night Sofia died using Ricardo’s code. The same code opened the garage gate seven minutes after Ricardo arrived.
The biometric record beside it did not belong to Ricardo.
It belonged to Gabriel.
“He was in the garage,” Clara said.
Dante enlarged another line. “And Judge Reed entered the estate remotely from a court-issued secure account.”
Ricardo’s voice went cold. “Reed altered the trust records while Gabriel handled Sofia.”
Evelyn pointed to a third entry. “Not alone. Someone approved the change from inside this house.”
The authorization belonged to Sofia herself.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
“She helped them?” Ricardo asked.
Clara read the time stamps. Sofia approved the trust transfer six hours before her death, then created the secret log afterward.
“Maybe she thought she was protecting Leo,” she said. “Then she discovered what they really wanted.”
Evelyn opened the underlying certificate. Sofia’s approval was attached to an earlier, legitimate version naming a retired federal judge as trustee. Reed had replaced only the final pages, preserving Sofia’s digital signature.
“She never authorized Aria,” Evelyn said. “He grafted her signature onto a different instrument.”
Clara looked at the access time. The altered file was created while Sofia sat at Leo’s birthday dinner.
Someone at that table had kept her occupied while Reed changed her son’s future.
Ricardo turned to Dante. “The birthday table. What happened after I left?”
Dante had avoided the answer for three years.
Sofia followed Ricardo into the hall, but Gabriel remained behind. He asked Dante to pour a drink, then told him that Sofia had named an outside trustee. When Sofia returned, she and Gabriel spoke privately near the terrace.
“I heard her say, ‘The judge promised Leo would be free,’” Dante said. “Gabriel answered, ‘Leo is the key, not the beneficiary.’”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ricardo demanded.
“Because Sofia made me swear I would get Leo out if you went to war. She was afraid of Gabriel, but she was also afraid of what grief would make you do.”
Ricardo looked as if the truth had struck him harder than any bullet.
That evening, Clara insisted everyone eat together.
Ricardo sat beside Leo. Dante joined them with a bruised mouth. Mrs. Alvarez placed spaghetti on the table because it was the only dinner Leo requested.

At first, nobody spoke.
Mrs. Alvarez deliberately placed the bread basket in front of Ricardo. “Pass it like a normal person.”
He stared at her.
“Mr. Moretti, I have served this family for twenty-one years. I am no longer impressed by the stare.”
Ricardo passed the bread. Leo copied him, solemnly handing Clara one roll and Dante another. The ordinary ritual did what armed security never had: it lowered every shoulder at the table.
Clara saw what Sofia must have wanted—not a child without a father, but a father who could enter his son’s world without bringing war through the door.
Then Ricardo set down his fork. “Dante, I was wrong.”
Leo watched carefully.
“You say sorry,” he prompted.
“I am sorry.”
Dante inclined his head. “Accepted.”
Leo pushed one meatball onto Dante’s plate. Peace, apparently, required sauce.
Clara laughed. Ricardo did too, quietly.
For ten minutes, they looked like a family that had not been assembled by danger.
After dinner, Ricardo found Clara alone in the kitchen.
“You made him speak to me again.”
“You did that when you apologized.”
“I would not have known how.”
“You’re learning.”
He touched the emerald ring. “Is this still only a prop?”
Clara’s pulse changed.
“Ask me when there isn’t a custody hearing, a killer, or a fake engagement between us.”
“That may be the most difficult condition anyone has given me.”
The lights flickered.
Dante shouted from the security room.
Clara smelled smoke.
The fire alarm erupted. Guards rushed toward the west wing as black smoke poured beneath a service door.
Mrs. Alvarez carried Leo outside. Ricardo turned to coordinate the evacuation.
A firefighter in breathing gear seized Clara’s arm.
“This way, ma’am.”
She followed him two steps before noticing his boots.
They were dry.
Every real firefighter entering through the rain had left wet prints.
Clara tried to pull away.
The man pressed a cloth over her mouth.
The last thing she saw was Ricardo turning toward her through the smoke.
He shouted her name.
Then the world went black.
