"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 10 — The Choice That Made a Family
Gabriel’s confidence cracked beneath the ballroom lights.
Reporters raised their phones. Moretti board members stared at Sofia’s image while her recorded statement described the forged trust, the payments to Judge Reed, and the threat that drove her into the parking garage.
“Turn it off,” Gabriel ordered.
No one moved.
Ricardo stepped onto the stage. His side was bandaged beneath his tuxedo, but his voice remained steady.
“Sofia left copies in three places. The original is now in federal custody.”
Gabriel looked toward the exits and saw agents blocking them.
“You surrendered family records to the government?”
“I surrendered everything.”
Murmurs spread through the room.
Ricardo faced the board. “Effective this morning, I resigned from Moretti Holdings. Every company used to conceal criminal revenue is in receivership. Legitimate employees will be protected through a court-supervised fund. The voting trust will belong to Leo when he is old enough to choose what the name Moretti means.”
Gabriel laughed, but the sound was brittle. “You destroyed generations of power for a waitress and a frightened child.”
“For my son,” Ricardo said. “And for the woman who taught me he was never mine to own.”
His eyes found Clara.
The room disappeared for one breath.
Then Gabriel seized a board member and pressed a gun beneath the man’s jaw.
Guests screamed and dropped behind tables.
Federal agents drew their weapons.
“Open the east door,” Gabriel shouted. “Or he dies.”
Ricardo raised empty hands. “Let him go.”
“You left me nothing.”
“You had a family. You chose control.”
Gabriel dragged the hostage toward the stage stairs. Clara crouched beside an overturned table, watching the giant screen. Sofia’s video had reached the birthday-dinner audio.
Gabriel’s younger voice filled the ballroom.
“Children don’t control shares.”
Onstage, his attention flicked toward the screen.
The hostage drove an elbow into his ribs.
Gabriel fired.
Ricardo moved between the gun and Clara.
The bullet struck high in his shoulder. He fell against the stage.
Dante fired once, hitting Gabriel’s leg. Agents rushed him before he could raise the weapon again.
Clara reached Ricardo.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
“Stay with me.”
His face tightened with pain. “I was planning to.”
“This is not the time to be funny.”
“I have been told my timing is terrible.”
She pressed both hands against the wound until paramedics took over.
As Gabriel was carried past, he looked at Ricardo with hatred.
“Sofia chose me to help her escape.”
Clara stood. “She chose the law. You and Reed turned it into another cage.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
That was the confession hidden beneath his pride: he had convinced himself betrayal was rescue because Sofia once trusted him.
Federal agents arrested him for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and Sofia’s death. Judge Reed was taken into custody at his home before midnight after investigators found trust drafts, Aria payment records, and Ricardo’s forged signature on his private server.

At Mount Sinai, surgeons removed the bullet without damage to Ricardo’s lung or major vessels.
Clara waited with Leo asleep across her lap. Mrs. Alvarez sat beside her. Dante stood near the door with his arm in a sling from the warehouse raid and refused three offers of a chair.
Evelyn arrived after dawn.
“The new judge vacated Reed’s placement order,” she said. “Gabriel’s petition is dismissed. Denise is recommending that Leo remain with Ricardo under temporary court monitoring while the criminal case proceeds.”
“Temporary?” Clara asked.
“Ricardo surrendered an organization and admitted enough financial wrongdoing to make sainthood unlikely.”
“Could he go to prison?”
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed the relief in the room.
Ricardo woke two hours later. Leo climbed carefully onto the bed and touched the bandage.
“Daddy broke?”
“A little.”
“Clara fix.”
Ricardo looked at her. “Clara already fixed more than she should have had to.”
She sat beside him. “Do not turn gratitude into another way of sending me away.”
“The agreement may cost me years.”
“Then tell me the truth about the years. Let me choose.”
He did.
Ricardo described the companies, the intimidation, and the money he had convinced himself kept his family safe. He did not minimize what he had done. Cooperation might reduce his sentence, but no promise had been made.
“I cannot offer you the life you saw at the estate,” he said.
“I never wanted the estate.”
“What do you want?”
Clara looked at Leo, who had fallen asleep with one hand over Ricardo’s.
“A home where nobody disappears because the truth is inconvenient.”
Ricardo removed the emerald ring from her finger.
Pain crossed her face before he placed it on the bedside table.
“That ring belonged to the lie,” he said. “If I ask again, it will be with one that belongs to us.”
Six months later, Ricardo stood in federal court and accepted responsibility for racketeering-related financial offenses. His cooperation dismantled the laundering network, recovered millions for victims, and secured convictions against Reed and Gabriel.
The judge imposed eighteen months in a minimum-security federal facility, followed by supervised release. It was not freedom, but it was less than the decade prosecutors had originally considered.
Clara attended every hearing.
During Ricardo’s sentence, she completed the pediatric nursing program she had abandoned while caring for Mia. A victims’ compensation review eliminated the hospital debt that had followed her for two years. She refused Ricardo’s money and accepted help only when it came without conditions.
Leo lived at the estate with Mrs. Alvarez, under Clara’s court-approved guardianship. Dante transformed the security company into a licensed protective-services firm and became the only man Leo allowed to cut his pancakes.
Ricardo called every night.
Sometimes Leo talked about preschool. Sometimes he placed the phone beside his pillow and demanded that Ricardo read the rabbit book from memory.
Ricardo never missed a call.
On the morning he came home, there were no reporters at the gate and no armed procession. Clara waited with Leo beneath the portico while autumn leaves crossed the drive.
Leo ran first.
Ricardo dropped his bag and caught him.
“Daddy stayed,” Leo said into his neck.
“Every day.”
Clara approached more slowly. Ricardo set Leo down and took a small box from his coat.
Inside was a plain gold ring with a tiny emerald set into the band.
“No performance,” he said. “No custody strategy. No contract.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
“Is there a question?”
“I am getting there.”
Leo sighed dramatically. “Daddy too slow.”
Ricardo laughed, then knelt.
“Clara Hayes, will you marry me and continue telling me when I am wrong for the rest of my life?”
“That sounds exhausting.”
“For me.”
She held out her hand. “Yes.”
They married in the garden the following spring. Evelyn signed as witness. Dante carried the rings after Leo decided he was too busy scattering flower petals in the wrong direction.
There were no newspaper exclusives and no Moretti board members.
At dinner, Leo climbed into the chair between Ricardo and Clara.
“Family table,” he announced.
Ricardo passed him the bread without being asked.
Clara looked at the man who had once believed love meant locking every door, and at the child who had taught both of them that safety meant someone choosing to stay.
Ricardo covered her hand with his.
“You were right that first night,” he said.
“About what?”
“He needed more than discipline.”
Leo leaned against Clara and smiled.
“I chose her.”
This time, Ricardo did not correct him.
“So did I.”
