"The Fiancée He Named Before Dawn" Chapter 3 — What Her Mother Took
Chapter 3 — What Her Mother Took
June made coffee while I spread two decades of her life across my kitchen table.
She had brought a thin folder in her overnight bag. Inside were photocopies of ledger pages, a letter she had never opened, and a bus ticket so old it had begun to split along the fold.
“You kept these?” I asked.
“I kept what I could replace before I left. The other copies disappeared from my apartment.”
The ledger pages were from the late nineties. Some entries listed wages, repairs, and catering bills for Bellini properties. Others carried the initials
HLF
beside large transfers.
“Harbor Light Fund,” I said.
“I didn’t know that name then. The entries looked like money leaving a family business under false descriptions.”
“Did anyone explain them?”
“I showed Vittorio Bellini.” June watched my face. “Nico’s father.”
“What did he say?”
“That I’d found something I wasn’t supposed to see. He promised to talk to me the next day.”
“And the lawyer?”
“Arthur said the figures were part of a private arrangement. He wouldn’t say whose. After the break-in, I didn’t know which of them to believe.”
I studied the pages. Some transfers ran to names rather than companies. June tapped one with her fingertip.
“I found out later that this woman had worked for the family. Her husband died, and she had two children. If the money went to her, I’m glad.”
“But the other entries?”
“I never found out.”
I looked at the sealed envelope. Vittorio Bellini’s name was printed in the return address. The postmark was dated four years after June had left New York.
“Why didn’t you open it?”
“Your father asked me that every few years.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That I was happy.”
“That doesn’t answer it.”
“No,” she said. “It never did.”
I pushed the letter back toward her. I had plenty of questions without opening something addressed to my mother.
My phone lit up with a call from Nico. June saw his name and raised her eyebrows.
“He’s helping with the badge,” I said.
“That is a narrow answer.”
“It’s the answer I have.”
I took the call on speaker.
“The floral assistant gave her badge to a guard at the loading entrance,” Nico said. “We’ve identified him. He logged the return, then put the badge in an unlocked tray.”
“Anyone could have taken it?”
“Six people had access before morning. We’re speaking to them.”
“My mother is here. She brought some old records.”
Nico went silent.
“June Vale?” he asked.
June leaned toward the phone. “June Ward.”
“You knew her name,” I said.
“My grandmother recognized it on a staff list after the gala. She thought June Vale had died years ago.”
“I’ve been paying taxes in plain sight,” June said.
“Rosa would like to see you,” Nico replied.
June’s expression softened despite herself. “I’d like to see her too.”

“First, tell us who asked the agency about my mother,” I said.
“That call came from the fund’s administrative office. I’ve asked for the call record.”
“Can you get me the current list of trustees?”
“It’s public. I’ll send the link.”
I appreciated that he had not offered to select what I should see. “Thank you.”
After the call, June opened her laptop. We found the fund’s annual reports and spent the afternoon matching what she remembered against the people named in them.
Harbor Light paid for apprenticeships, emergency rent, medical travel, and school fees for families connected to New York’s docks. Many recipients were protected by privacy rules. That explained why June’s ledger had used codes; it did not explain why someone had taken her copies or begun asking about her daughter.
I made three columns on a sheet of paper:
What we know. What we can prove. What we need.
June read over my shoulder. “You used to do that with school projects.”
“I do it with weddings now.”
“Does it help?”
“Usually before someone asks for ice sculptures.”
We found one name repeated across older and newer reports: Arthur Voss. He had been a legal adviser when June left. He no longer held that position, but his firm still represented a donor to the fund.
At four, a courier arrived with a document addressed to me. I signed for it, opened it, and read the first paragraph twice.
A firm representing Harbor Light’s administrators was reviewing the appointment of an independent trustee. An interested party had raised concerns about my connection to Nico Bellini. Until those concerns were resolved, the administrators would delay considering members of June Vale’s family for the role.
“I never applied,” I said.
June took the letter. “Neither did I.”
Nico’s announcement had lasted less than five hours. Someone had used it anyway.
I called the number at the bottom. An assistant connected me to a woman named Miriam Chen, the fund’s interim director.
“Why was this sent to me?” I asked.
“Your mother was named in instructions left by a former trustee. We’ve been trying to contact her.”
June reached for the phone. “I’m here.”
Miriam paused. “Ms. Vale?”
“Ward. And if someone wanted to find me, they could have sent a letter.”
“The instructions were sealed during a records review. We learned your current name recently.”
“Who challenged my daughter?” June asked.
“I can’t discuss the filing until it’s formally served.”
“Then tell me when I can read it,” I said.
“It becomes available to the parties tomorrow morning.”
“I haven’t agreed to become a party.”
“The objection names you, Ms. Ward. I’m afraid that decision has been made for you.”
I looked at June. She looked as angry as I felt.
“Send the appointment instructions,” I said. “I want to know what they say before I decide anything.”
Miriam agreed.

After the call, I sent Nico a photograph of the letter. He phoned immediately.
“I’ll have counsel challenge it,” he said.
“No. Send me the name of a lawyer who has never worked for your family.”
“You don’t need to do this alone.”
“I don’t plan to. I plan to choose who helps.”
He exhaled. “I know someone. She’s handled nonprofit disputes and has no connection to us. I’ll send her details. You can decide whether to call.”
“Good.”
“Tessa, I didn’t know the announcement could be used this way.”
“I believe you.” I looked at the letter again. “But someone was ready when you said it.”
That evening, June finally opened Vittorio’s envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten page. She read it standing beside the kitchen counter. Halfway down, she sat.
“Mom?”
She handed me the letter.
Vittorio apologized for letting Arthur dismiss her questions. He wrote that some of the transfers supported people who had asked the fund to keep their names private. He also admitted June had found entries he could not reconcile. He had ordered a separate review after she left.
At the bottom was a sentence underlined twice:
If Arthur tells you the matter is closed, ask him for the second ledger.
I looked up. June was staring at the old pages spread across my table.
“He told me there was only one,” she said.
I took my pen and added
SECOND LEDGER
to the third column.
Then I opened the list Nico had sent me. Arthur Voss’s firm still represented a fund donor. His name remained close to Harbor Light after twenty-seven years.
Tomorrow, the objection would be available. Tonight, I had enough to know what to look for.
I placed Vittorio’s letter in a clear sleeve and photographed both sides. June watched me save copies in two places.
“What happens now?” she asked.
“We read what they filed. We ask where the other ledger went.” I closed the folder. “And this time, nobody gets to tell you that you misunderstood it.”
