"The Little Girl Who Knocked at Midnight" Chapter 2: The Man Who Held the Keys
Chapter 2: The Man Who Held the Keys
“Put it down, Caleb.”
He did not move his gun. “You don’t know what’s on that drive.”
“Then tell me.”
Behind me, Peter guided Nora off the bed. She could stand, barely. Maisie crawled into her arms, rabbit dragging by its torn seam.
Caleb saw them move. “Nora, you’ve made this worse.”
“You injected me.”
“I told you to hand it over. I didn’t know you’d fight.”
“You came into my room while my daughter was asleep.”
His silence answered her.
For nine years, Caleb had stood beside me at negotiations, funerals, and the opening of every building with my name on it. He knew which doors I left unlocked. He knew Peter’s car. He knew that if a child came to me for help, I would open my bedroom door.
The three shots downstairs had been part of his plan. He needed my attention on the stairs while he came for the drive.
“Gideon won’t pay you enough to survive this,” I said.
Caleb’s mouth tightened. “You still think this is about money.”
Nora took a careful breath. “The original files are in the old carriage house.”
I turned my head a fraction.
There were no files in the carriage house. I had cleared it the previous spring. Nora had never been inside.
Caleb glanced toward the window. “Show me.”
“I need to sit down first,” she said. “I can’t carry Maisie.”
“You don’t need to. He can.”
Caleb shifted his gun toward me.
In that brief movement, Nora threw the empty IV bag at his face. It bought us less than a second. I drove into him and forced his arm against the doorframe. The gun fired into the ceiling. Peter pulled Maisie behind the bed while Nora kicked the weapon down the hall.
Caleb struck my jaw with his free hand. I hit him again, hard enough to send him into the dresser. He went down but reached for the gun.
“Move,” I told the others.
I shut him inside Nora’s apartment and pulled the heavy security bolt across the exterior door. He slammed into it once.
It would not hold long. He had the keys to half the house.
Nora leaned against the wall. Peter steadied her. From below came the shout of a guard and the sound of someone running.
“Are those your men?” Peter asked.
“I don’t know anymore.”
I took them toward the service corridor. Caleb had designed the current security system, but the east wing was older than he was. Behind a linen cabinet lay a narrow passage once used to reach the original boiler room. I had kept the old plans because developers are sentimental about unusual architecture.
Tonight, the passage was useful for something other than a tour.
Nora stopped at the cabinet. “You knew this was here?”
“Yes.”
“And Caleb doesn’t?”

“He has the plans. He thinks it was sealed.”
She looked at me sharply. “Was it?”
“Until last winter.”
I moved the cabinet, opened the narrow panel, and let Peter lead Nora through. Maisie refused to leave her mother’s arms. The passage smelled of dust and old plaster. Our phones gave just enough light to see the next step.
Behind us, metal scraped against metal. Caleb was opening the apartment door.
Peter checked Nora’s pulse as we walked. “We need to get her to the hospital.”
“We will.”
Nora heard the hesitation. “Where are you taking us first?”
“Out of his reach.”
“That isn’t a place.”
She was right. I gave her the answer. “The north garage. My driver keeps an older car there, one that isn’t on the security board.”
“You trust the driver?”
“I trust that Caleb thinks I fired him six months ago.”
That earned a tired, suspicious look. Nora did not ask why a supposedly fired man still had a car on my property.
At the end of the passage, I called Ellis.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“Outside Ms. Ellis’s room. Ward ordered us to the stairs.”
“Who’s with you?”
“Two men.”
“Does Caleb know you’re there?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Then listen carefully. There’s a drive in that room. Tell him Peter took it to the carriage house.”
“Sir?”
“Repeat it exactly.”
I heard him relay the message. A pause followed. Then Caleb’s voice sounded through the phone, distant and furious, giving an order to search the grounds.
Nora met my eyes. Her lie had worked.
We reached the garage without seeing anyone. My driver, Luis, was there within four minutes. I had called him from the passage. He took one look at Nora and opened the rear door.
Peter climbed in beside her. “I’m coming to the hospital.”
“Use the south exit,” I told Luis. “Call the hospital on your way.”
I lifted Maisie into the car. She caught my sleeve.
“Are you coming?”
“In another car.”
“Promise?”
I looked at Nora. She had one arm around Maisie, but her eyes were on the flash drive I still held.
“I promise,” I said.
Luis started the engine. Before he could pull out, a pair of headlights washed across the garage windows.
A security vehicle stopped outside.
Nora’s fingers closed on the door handle. “How?”
I knew the answer. Caleb could track the car if he reached the board, and he knew where the north garage was. The lie had given us minutes, not safety.
I pressed the flash drive into Nora’s palm.
“Keep it.”
“You need it to draw him away.”
“I can give him something else.”
I took an identical drive from my key ring. It held building plans I had meant to review that morning. In the dark, Caleb would see only what he wanted to see.
Peter frowned. “Roman—”
“Get them out.”

I stepped into the garage doorway with the false drive between my fingers. Caleb emerged from the security vehicle. Two guards followed him. One held his gun low. The other kept looking from Caleb to me, confused.
“You found it,” Caleb said.
“Let the car leave.”
“Hand it over.”
Luis rolled the car forward. Caleb’s eyes darted to the windshield, where Maisie sat against Nora’s shoulder.
I raised the drive. “You want this, or you want to explain to Gideon why it went through the hospital doors?”
Caleb signaled his men to stand aside. Luis drove past them and out into the night.
Only when the taillights vanished did I throw the false drive onto the garage floor between us. Caleb bent for it. I stepped back into the shadows, through the side door I had left open, and locked it behind me.
He would discover the switch. By then, I meant to be gone.
I took a maintenance truck through an ungated service road and reached the hospital twenty minutes after Nora. Peter had persuaded the staff to admit her under her own name, with security alerted to a possible assault. Nora was awake and sitting upright when I entered her room.
Maisie slept curled in a chair, Bunny tucked beneath her chin.
“You gave me the real drive,” Nora said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Caleb expected me to keep it.”
She studied the bruise forming along my jaw. “That’s not the only reason.”
I pulled up a chair but left space between us. “Your brother’s name. What was it?”
“Evan Ellis.”
I remembered the name from a file I had signed six years ago: an employee killed in a warehouse fire, a settlement, a report declaring the cause accidental.
Nora saw the recognition.
“I didn’t come to your house because I needed a job,” she said. “I came because your name was on the paper that closed my brother’s case.”
