"The Little Girl Who Knocked at Midnight" Chapter 6: What She Kept
Chapter 6: What She Kept
Grace took Maisie into the back room. Peter was eight minutes away. Caleb’s watcher could see the front windows but had not yet approached the house.
Nora held Grace on the phone while I called Vega. We gave her the photograph, Grace’s address, and the live location of the car outside my estate. Vega sent officers toward Grace and told us not to lead anyone there ourselves.
“I’m already in the car,” Nora said.
“Nora,” Vega answered, “if the person watching sees you arrive, they may use the child against you.”
“Then tell your officers which window he photographed. He’s across the street, not at the door.”
Vega asked for the image. Nora sent it and pointed out the reflection of a red delivery sign in the kitchen glass. There was only one place across from Grace’s house with that sign. Officers arrived there before we did.
Peter called as we turned into the neighborhood. He had Maisie in his car, Grace beside her. The watcher had tried to drive away when he saw the police and had been stopped at the next intersection.
Nora asked to hear Maisie’s voice.
“Mommy? Grace’s dog ate a purple crayon.”
Nora closed her eyes. “I’ll buy him another one.”
“He can’t eat another one.”
“I know, sweetheart.”
We met Peter two blocks away. Nora held Maisie until the child complained that she was squeezing too hard. Only then did Nora let me take the rabbit while she buckled her daughter back into the car.
“We have a safe place for them,” Vega told us over the phone. “The man we stopped won’t identify who hired him.”
“He doesn’t need to,” Nora said. “Caleb sent the photograph to my phone.”
Caleb had wanted her frightened and predictable. Instead, she had given Vega a witness, a message, and a vehicle to search.
Gideon moved before the police could bring him in for questions. His lawyers called an emergency meeting of the harbor company’s board, claiming I had mishandled evidence and endangered an employee. Helen warned me that he had enough allies to remove me from day-to-day control.
“I can suspend his access first,” I said.
“You can try. He’ll challenge it.”
“Let him do it in person.”
I signed the temporary suspension order under the company’s emergency provisions. Helen delivered it to Gideon’s office and copied the board. Within twenty minutes, he called me.
“You’ve made this public,” he said.
“You started with a press release about a child.”
“That woman stole my records.”
“She says your security chief injected her.”
Gideon’s voice cooled. “Meet me before your board does. Bring whatever she took, and perhaps we can still settle this.”
Nora, seated across from me at Vega’s office, shook her head. She wanted him to think the drive was the only thing we had. I put the call on speaker.

“Where?” I asked.
“The old project office. Six o’clock.”
“Caleb will be there?”
“He works for you, Roman.”
The call ended.
“He’s going to offer you a way out,” Nora said. “He’ll say Evan broke the rules, and you can blame Caleb for everything that happened last night.”
“He knows I can’t accept that.”
“He’s counting on you wanting to.”
I had signed the settlement six years ago because closing the case had been easier than opening the report again. Gideon knew exactly how much I had once wanted a clean ending.
At four, Helen obtained the inventory for the sealed insurance file. The physical records were intact. An investigator could request them, though the process would take time. Tessa’s missing page might tell us which alarm log mattered, but we had not found her.
Nora refused to wait for that page before acting. With Vega present, she recorded a full statement about Tessa’s messages, Evan’s voicemail, the flash drive, and Caleb’s assault. She gave Vega a copy of every file in her possession. Helen sent the board a preservation notice forbidding deletion of project records, including messages from my office.
Gideon would arrive believing he could buy the only copy. The investigators would already have one.
At the project office, I went in with the drive Nora had given me. She stayed nearby with Helen and Vega. Maisie remained with Peter and Grace at the police-arranged location, far from the building. Nora had told her where she would be and when she would call.
Gideon waited beside a wall of photographs celebrating the development of the harbor. Caleb stood near the door, bandaged wrist at his side. He looked surprised to see me alone.
“You brought the files?” Gideon asked.
I placed the drive on the table. “You first. What happened at Pier Nine?”
“A fire happened. Your company compensated a family.”
“Evan Ellis warned us about the exits.”
“Thousands of people warn companies about thousands of things.”
“And someone removed the warning from the report I signed.”
Gideon’s eyes moved to Caleb. It was a small movement. He could not take it back.
“He acted without my authority,” Gideon said.
Caleb straightened. “That isn’t what you told me.”
I had wanted them in the same room for that exact reason. Gideon tried to regain control by offering me the story Nora had predicted: Caleb had exceeded his instructions; the old report had contained an administrative error; Nora could receive another payment in exchange for silence.
“You could keep your company,” Gideon said. “You could make sure that little girl never has to hear any of this.”
From the doorway, Nora answered him.
“She’s already heard enough.”
Helen entered behind her. Vega remained outside with two officers, close enough to intervene. Nora had insisted on hearing Gideon speak for herself, but she did not go near Caleb.
Gideon looked at me. “You brought her here?”
“She chose to come.”
Nora laid Evan’s inspection photograph on the table. “You knew the fire doors were chained. Tessa found the payment you made after Evan reported it.”
Gideon glanced at the photograph, then at the drive. “A scan and a frightened former employee. That’s what you have?”
Nora’s hand trembled as she took out her phone. She steadied it against the table.
“No. We also have the location of the original records.”
Gideon’s confidence faltered. Caleb took a step toward the door and found Vega waiting there.
Nora opened the secure transfer Vega had arranged for the archive inventory and Tessa’s correspondence. Gideon watched her select the files.
“You don’t know who gets hurt when you send that,” he said.
“I know who got hurt when nobody did.”
She pressed send.
For one second, the progress circle turned. Then a warning filled her screen.
Recipient identity could not be verified.
Nora pulled the phone back before anyone else could touch it. Vega came to her side and looked at the address.
“That isn’t the account I gave you.”
Gideon smiled. “It’s the one the man on the phone gave you.”
Nora looked up. Only Vega and the investigator assigned to receive the files were supposed to know their verification phrase. Gideon spoke it aloud, word for word.
Somewhere between the police office and this room, a man claiming to be that investigator had reached Nora first.
