"The Little Girl Who Knocked at Midnight" Chapter 7: The Wrong Recipient
Chapter 7: The Wrong Recipient
Nora canceled the transfer before the progress circle completed.
“Your files didn’t go through,” Gideon said.
“I know.” She turned the phone so Vega could see the address. “Someone replaced the recipient.”
Vega compared it with the address on her own phone. The first half matched. The last two letters did not.
Nora had insisted on identity verification for exactly this reason. She locked her screen, removed the flash drive from the phone’s adapter, and put it in Vega’s hand.
“Give it to the technician who made the forensic copy this morning,” she said. “I’ll watch him confirm it’s the same drive. Then we can decide how the archive inventory gets to your investigator.”
Gideon’s smile faded.
“You think that fixes the problem?” he asked.
“No. It tells me where the problem is.”
Vega called the investigator on the number she had saved before the case began. She did not say the verification phrase. She asked him to meet her at the station in person. Then she told the officers at the door to keep Caleb there while she took statements.
Caleb looked at Gideon. “You said no one could trace that account.”
One of the officers asked him to keep his hands visible.
I had spent the last hour trying to make Gideon talk. Nora had made Caleb do it in one sentence.
At the station, the evidence technician confirmed that the drive Nora carried matched the copy he had taken at the hospital. Vega sealed it and gave Nora a receipt. The archive inventory and Tessa’s correspondence went separately through Vega’s case system while Nora stood beside her. No one asked her to trust another voice on a phone.
The investigator arrived half an hour later. He showed his credentials to Vega, not to Nora, and confirmed that he had never called her. The false address had been sent from a number assigned to a contractor who handled document intake for the department.
“Gideon knew the phrase,” Nora said. “Someone gave it to him.”
“We’ll find out who,” Vega answered. “We’re removing that contractor from this case now.”
Nora had won the immediate fight. I could see how tired she was when she finally sat down.
I brought her a paper cup of coffee. She took it, then set it aside without drinking.
“Maisie?” she asked.
I showed her Peter’s latest message: Maisie was asleep, Grace was beside her, and two officers remained nearby. Nora read it twice.
Helen appeared at the interview room door with a file under her arm. Her face told me that Gideon had begun his next attack.
“He’s submitted a statement to the board,” she said. “It includes copies of payments from a company you controlled before the Pier Nine fire.”
I took the pages she offered. They showed transfers from a Vescari holding company to a consulting firm connected to harbor officials. The amounts were small beside the sums Gideon had moved, but the dates were ugly.

Nora saw my expression. “Are they real?”
“Yes.”
“What were they for?”
“Access. I paid people to tell me which bids were coming and who was opposing them.”
“You bribed them?”
“Some of those payments may be treated that way.”
Nora put down her phone. “And you kept a record?”
“I kept every record.”
“Why?”
“So no one could tell me later that I’d agreed to something I hadn’t.”
She looked at the pages again. “That worked well.”
I could not argue.
Helen closed the door. “Gideon wants Roman removed before the board can see the rest of the archive file. If we hand over the complete ledger, he’ll lose the ability to select only the pages that hurt Roman. But the rest will hurt him too.”
“There are names in there,” I said.
“Yes. There are also payments that intersect with the night of the fire.”
Nora looked up. “You’ve seen them?”
“I saw one entry before we came here,” Helen said. “I need the full ledger to establish what it means.”
It was locked in my office at the estate. Caleb knew the safe existed, though he did not know the combination. If I waited, Gideon might convince the board that I had destroyed it. If I produced it, I would expose transactions I had spent years pretending were ordinary business.
Vega came back to tell us Caleb had been taken for questioning about the assault and the threat to Maisie. Gideon had left with his lawyer. He had refused to answer questions about the altered recipient address.
“You’re free to go,” Vega told Nora. “I may need you again tomorrow.”
Nora stood. “I’ll come.”
Vega turned to me. “Mr. Vescari, I’d like to speak with you about the ledger your lawyer mentioned.”
Helen stiffened. I had not realized how much of our conversation carried through the door.
“You can,” I said. “After I retrieve it with you present.”
Helen asked for a moment alone. Vega waited outside.
“If there’s anything else in that safe, tell me now,” Helen said.
“Contract records. My grandfather’s watch. The ledger.”
“Anything that could make tonight worse?”
“I’ll know when we open it.”
Nora rose from the chair. She did not offer to come with me.
“You believed Gideon because his version let you close Evan’s case,” she said. “If that ledger tells a different story, I need you to let everyone read it.”
“I will.”
“I’m not asking for another promise, Roman. I’m telling you what happens next. I’ll keep going with or without you.”
She went to call Maisie.
Helen watched her leave. “You could still speak to me before you decide.”
“I know.”
Back at the estate, officers accompanied me past the damaged ceiling in Nora’s apartment and the corridor whose cameras had gone dark. My office was untouched. I opened the safe myself.
The ledger lay beneath three years of contracts. I gave it to Vega.
She opened to the week of the fire. One payment was marked as consulting, routed through the firm Gideon had used. Beside it, in my own handwriting, was a question mark.
I remembered writing it. I had asked Gideon for an explanation at the time. He told me it covered emergency transport after a safety complaint.
Vega turned the page. A second payment, made the morning after Evan died, went to the same firm. This one carried no question mark. My office had approved it.
“You knew enough to ask about the first payment,” Vega said.
“And I accepted his answer.”
She closed the ledger and placed it in an evidence bag.
By morning, it would help Nora’s case. It might also end my career. I signed the receipt anyway.
