"My Billionaire Boss Held My Daughter. Then He Said Her Father’s Name." Chapter 8 — You Don’t Get to Buy My Silence
Chapter 8 — You Don’t Get to Buy My Silence
Martin stopped answering his phone the next morning.
By noon, I had called twice and left one message.
Maya told me not to keep calling.
“He knows how to reach us. Owen is checking on him.”
“What if he’s changed his mind?”
“Then we find out why. We don’t pressure him into being useful.”
I sat back at my desk.
Across the aisle, two colleagues stopped talking.
I waited for them to resume.
They didn’t.
At three, my supervisor told me I was being reassigned again.
This time, there was no project folder.
“We think it would be best for you to assist with data entry until the review is complete.”
“What happened to the invoice analysis?”
“Another team member will finish it.”
“I completed the exception report this morning.”
“I’m aware.”
I looked at him.
“Is this connected to the complaint?”
“It’s a temporary operational decision.”
“Please send me the reason in writing.”
He sighed.
“Claire, not everything needs to become a formal issue.”
I opened a blank email.
“Then it should be easy to explain.”
He left without answering.
For the rest of the afternoon, I entered figures from documents I would ordinarily have been expected to assess.
At five, I sent Maya the new assignment and my notes.
Then I opened my résumé.
Ethan called while I was making dinner.
“I heard about the reassignment.”
“Did you call my supervisor?”
“No.”
“Thank you.”
There was a pause.
“I wanted to.”
“I know.”
Lily was arranging pasta into a circle beside her plate.
I lowered my voice.
“I’ve started applying elsewhere.”
“You don’t have to leave.”
“I know I don’t have to. I want to stop having every decision about my work interpreted through you.”
“Your complaint should be handled properly.”
“And I’ll keep cooperating with it. Leaving doesn’t mean I’m admitting it.”
“No.”
“I need work that belongs to me.”
He was quiet.
Then he said, “Would you like me to look at your résumé?”
I almost smiled.
“No. But you can come over and help convince Lily that pasta is food rather than building material.”
“I can do that.”
After the call, Lily looked up.
“Is Uncle Ethan coming?”
We had told her two days earlier.
Not about the accident. Not yet.
Only that Ethan was her father’s brother, and that she could decide what to call him.
She had tried “Uncle Ethan” once, liked the sound, and kept it.
“Yes.”
“Can he have the broken noodles?”
“He can have dinner like everyone else.”
She considered that, then began moving the broken pieces to her own plate.
Richard’s retaliation became clearer the next day.
Ethan arrived at Maya’s office with a notice requesting a special board meeting.
The stated concerns included misuse of company resources, failure to manage conflicts, and conduct exposing the business to reputational harm.

I read the document while he sat beside me.
My name didn’t appear.
“An employee with a personal claim against the Callahan family” did.
“So that’s me.”
“Yes.”
Maya took the notice back.
“The company’s independent directors need accurate information. Personal correspondence shouldn’t be circulated indiscriminately, but relevant records must be preserved and reviewed.”
Ethan nodded.
“I’ve agreed to an independent review of my decisions.”
“Richard won’t agree,” I said.
“He may not be able to prevent it.”
“Can he remove you?”
“Not alone.”
“But with enough support.”
“Yes.”
I had grown accustomed to thinking of Ethan’s power as something permanent.
A building with his name on it.
A room that quieted when he entered.
Now I understood that people could stand inside those rooms and decide he no longer belonged there.
Owen joined us halfway through the meeting.
“Martin is safe,” he said. “He’s frightened and angry. The lost work mattered.”
“Can we pay his bills?” Ethan asked.
Maya looked at him.
“We cannot make his cooperation depend on money. Any support needs careful, transparent handling.”
Ethan nodded immediately.
Owen continued.
“I’ve arranged another conversation. His statement and the materials are already preserved. We’re also seeking records from independent sources.”
“What if Richard gets to someone else?” I asked.
“Then we need the case to rest on more than one person.”
I opened my notebook.
The invoices. The original project records. The recovery payment. The accident file. Caleb’s messages. Richard’s agreement.
Each came from somewhere different.
For the first time, the investigation looked less like a fragile collection of secrets and more like work that could be completed.
Two days later, Maya helped me draft my resignation.
I didn’t accuse anyone in it.
I gave notice, requested written confirmation of my final pay and benefits, and stated that I remained available to answer questions through the appropriate process.
Before submitting it, I finished the work on my desk.
My supervisor read the email while I stood beside him.
“You’re leaving?”
“Yes.”
“Does Mr. Callahan know?”
“Yes.”
He looked almost relieved.
That hurt.
Then I remembered the exception report I had completed, the years I had spent learning to do this job, and the applications already waiting in my sent folder.
His relief was not a verdict on me.
“Please confirm the handover arrangements,” I said.
Outside the office, I called Ethan.
“It’s done.”
“Are you sure?”
“I was sure before I sent it.”
“All right.”
“I’m still helping with the investigation.”
“I didn’t think otherwise.”
“And this doesn’t mean you’re taking care of everything now.”
“I didn’t think that either.”
I smiled despite myself.
“You’re learning.”
“Slowly.”
We moved into the temporary apartment that weekend.
Maya had reviewed the arrangement. It ran for a fixed period, with no requirement that I remain involved with Ethan personally.
I had agreed because the entrance was staffed, the locks worked, and Lily could still attend the same daycare.
Not because the kitchen had stone counters.
Lily loved the empty cupboards.
She put her rabbit inside one before I could stop her.
Ethan carried the last box in and left it where I pointed.
“Should I put the books away?”
“I’ll do it.”
He stepped back.
I watched him.
“What?” he asked.
“You really do have to stop yourself from organizing everything.”
“Yes.”
I opened the box.
Caleb’s photograph was on top.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then Ethan said, “There’s a shelf beside the window.”
I placed the frame there.
He didn’t look away from it.
Later, after Lily fell asleep, we sat together on the floor among the empty boxes.
I told him I was frightened that wanting him would make people think everything Richard said was true.
“People can think that,” he said. “It doesn’t make it true.”
“I don’t want our relationship used to discredit Caleb.”
“Neither do I.”
“And I won’t stop asking questions because I kissed you.”
“I’d be concerned if you did.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder.
He rested his hand over mine.
We stayed there until my phone began to vibrate.
It was a message from Maya.
The archived Westbridge packet arrived. There is a handwritten response from Caleb attached to the termination notice. Ethan needs to read it too.
I opened the scan.
Caleb had written across the bottom of Ethan’s instruction.
Richard is altering the records. Please look at the originals before you decide.
Beside it was a received stamp from Ethan’s office.
The warning had reached him.
