"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Son" Chapter 5 — Eight Years of Lies
“Was it me?”
Elena’s question hung between them.
Dante stood on the other side of the desk, his face unreadable.
He had spent his entire adult life learning how to remain silent when silence gave him power.
Tonight, it only made him look guilty.
Elena held up the contract.
“Was I the woman my father originally offered you?”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“Elena—”
“Yes or no.”
“Yes.”
One word.
That was all it took to rearrange eight years of her life.
Elena stared at him.
She expected rage.
Instead, she felt strangely empty.
“My father tried to arrange my marriage to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you refused.”
Dante looked directly at her.
“Yes.”
A laugh escaped her.
Of course.
Of course he had.
She dropped the paper onto the desk.
“So that’s it.”
“No.”
“You had the chance to marry me, and you said no.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“It sounds exactly like that.”
“Richard didn’t offer me you. He offered me a contract with your name attached to it.”
“And apparently that was worse than marrying Victoria.”
Dante came around the desk.
Elena raised one hand.
“Stay there.”
He stopped.
“Tell me everything.”
“Elena—”
“Everything.”
Dante studied her for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
“Your father came to me after Vincent acquired the debt. Richard needed protection. Vincent knew he couldn’t move openly against Bennett Holdings if doing it meant starting a war with me.”
“So Dad proposed an alliance.”
“Yes.”
“Through me.”
“At first.”
Elena folded her arms.
“And you refused.”
“I refused to marry you as part of a business agreement.”
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn’t.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“No. You chose not to.”
Dante’s eyes darkened.
“Richard made it clear that if you learned about the debt, you would become part of it.”
“How?”
“He knew you.”
“So did you.”
“You would have tried to save him.”
Elena opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Because he was right.
Dante continued.
“You would have sold your apartment. Liquidated your trust. Called every bank you knew. And when that wasn’t enough, you would have gone looking for whoever held the debt.”
“Vincent.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“And Vincent would have known exactly how much you mattered to me.”
Her stomach tightened.
“He already knew.”
“He suspected. There’s a difference.”
“So your solution was to lie to me.”
“My solution was to keep your name out of the agreement.”
“By marrying my sister.”
“That came later.”
Elena shook her head.
“I don’t understand.”
“After I refused the original proposal, Richard offered Victoria.”
“And you suddenly decided contractual marriage was acceptable?”
“No.”
“Then why did you agree?”
Dante’s silence returned.
Elena laughed bitterly.
“There it is again.”
“I’m trying to tell you without dragging you into something you can’t undo.”
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.”
“Elena.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.

“For eight years, every time I asked about marriage, you told me you couldn’t.”
Her voice trembled.
“You never said you didn’t love me.”
“I did love you.”
“That made it worse.”
Dante’s face changed.
“You let me believe there was something wrong with me.”
“There was never anything wrong with you.”
“How was I supposed to know that?”
He had no answer.
“I thought maybe I wasn’t respectable enough for the Moretti name. Then I thought maybe you had another woman. Then I thought you liked having me in your bed but couldn’t imagine me standing beside you in public.”
“That was never true.”
“But you let me believe it.”
Dante lowered his head.
Elena’s eyes burned.
“And then the invitation arrived.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She was crying now, and she hated it.
“You don’t know what it was like to see your name beside hers.”
“Elena—”
“I spent eight years asking you to choose me. Then you married my sister.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You didn’t protect me!”
The words exploded through the room.
“You made my choices for me.”
Dante went still.
Elena wiped her face angrily.
“You decided I couldn’t know about Dad. You decided I couldn’t know about Vincent. You decided I couldn’t choose whether the risk was worth taking.”
“I thought if you hated me, you would leave.”
“I did.”
“I know.”
“You got exactly what you wanted.”
“No.”
The answer came so quickly that she looked at him.
Dante’s composure was gone.
“No, Elena. I got to watch you leave the wedding before the cake was cut. I called you the next morning. Your number was disconnected.”
“I changed it.”
“I went to your apartment.”
“I had already left.”
“I sent people to find you.”
Her anger sharpened.
“I know.”
Dante stopped.
“You knew?”
“Mia saw them.”
“I wasn’t trying to bring you back.”
“Then what were you doing?”
“Making sure you were alive.”
That silenced her.
Dante looked exhausted.
“I found out you were in Europe. I found out you were safe. Then I stopped looking because I thought that was what you wanted.”
“It was.”
“I know.”
Neither spoke.
Then Dante’s gaze shifted toward the papers.
“When did you know you were pregnant?”
“Three weeks after I left.”
“Did anyone else know?”
“Mia.”
“Victoria?”
“Apparently Dad told her later.”
His expression hardened.
“Richard knew?”
“That’s what Victoria said.”
Dante turned away.
For the first time, Elena saw anger directed not at her, but at a dead man.
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
He swore under his breath.
Then looked at her.
“I want a DNA test.”
Elena stiffened.
“Not because I don’t believe you.”
“Then why?”
“Because there can never be a question.”
“To whom?”
“Anyone.”
She understood immediately.
The Moretti family.
Inheritance.
Enemies.
A world Leo had never asked to enter.

“I don’t want him turned into a Moretti asset.”
“Neither do I.”
“You say that now.”
“I’m saying it as his father.”
“You’ve been his father for less than twenty-four hours.”
Pain flashed across Dante’s face.
Elena regretted the sentence.
Not enough to take it back.
“He has a life,” she said. “He has preschool in Zurich. Friends. A bedroom with stars on the ceiling. He likes strawberries but refuses blueberries because he thinks they’re angry.”
Dante almost smiled.
“He thinks blueberries are angry?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I have no idea.”
For one second, they were simply two parents talking about their child.
Then reality returned.
Elena picked up her coat.
“I’ll agree to the test.”
Dante looked at her.
“But understand something. DNA gives you a biological relationship. It does not give you ownership.”
“I don’t want ownership.”
“What do you want?”
His answer was quiet.
“A chance.”
Elena left before she could respond.
The test was performed the next morning at a private clinic.
Leo complained about the cheek swab.
“It tastes weird.”
“It doesn’t taste like anything,” Elena said.
“It tastes like stick.”
Dante stood across the room trying not to smile.
Leo pointed at him.
“He thinks it’s funny.”
“I don’t,” Dante said immediately.
“You did.”
“I apologize.”
Leo considered this.
“Okay.”
The results arrived that evening.
Elena opened the secure email alone.
Probability of paternity:
99.99%.
She stared at the number.
She had never doubted it.
Still, seeing it made something permanent.
She forwarded the report to Dante.
No message.
No explanation.
Just the document.
An hour passed.
Then two.
Dante did not call.
At nearly midnight, Nico found him sitting alone in his office.
The printed report lay on the desk.
Dante had read it so many times the paper had begun to bend beneath his fingers.
Nico stopped at the doorway.
“You okay?”
Dante didn’t look up.
For years, men had feared his name.
Judges returned his calls.
Politicians accepted his invitations.
People twice his age lowered their voices when he entered a room.
None of it mattered.
Three years ago, somewhere thousands of miles away, his son had been born.
And Dante had not known.
He touched the line that contained Leo’s name.
His eyes burned.
“I have a son.”
Nico said nothing.
Dante looked at the report again.
Then he noticed something beneath the probability result.
A date.
Leo’s full date of birth.
Dante calculated backward.
His face changed.
He reached for his phone.
Not to call Elena.
To call Charles Whitmore.
Because if Richard Bennett had known about Elena’s pregnancy as early as Victoria claimed, then the old man had kept something from Dante too.
And Dante suddenly wanted to know exactly how many people had known his son existed while he did not.
