"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Son" Chapter 7 — Victoria’s Secret

Victoria was waiting in the Gold Coast house when Elena arrived.

Not Dante’s house.

Another one.

Elena learned that detail from Nico when he gave her the address.

Victoria had apparently lived there for most of the marriage.

Alone.

That should not have mattered.

It did.

The house was elegant and cold, overlooking Lake Michigan.

Victoria stood beside the fireplace with a folder in her hand.

“No Dante?”

Elena asked.

“I told him not to come.”

“Why?”

“Because this conversation is between sisters.”

Elena almost laughed.

“We stopped being sisters three years ago.”

Pain crossed Victoria’s face.

“I know.”

“Show me the contract.”

Victoria placed it on the table.

Elena opened it.

The first pages matched Richard’s copy.

Then she reached the marital alliance provision.

No redaction.

Her own name stared back at her.

ELENA BENNETT.

She stopped.

The words blurred.

Victoria sat opposite her.

“Dad originally wanted you to marry Dante.”

“I know.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“He told you?”

“Dante did.”

“And did Dante tell you why he refused?”

“He said he wouldn’t marry me as part of a business transaction.”

Victoria gave a small, sad smile.

“That sounds like him.”

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Talk about him like you know him better than I do.”

Victoria looked down.

“I probably know him differently.”

“You’re his wife.”

“On paper.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you keep refusing to understand it.”

Elena slammed the folder shut.

“Then make me understand.”

Victoria inhaled.

“Dante and I have never been husband and wife.”

“You had a wedding.”

“We had a contract.”

“You lived together.”

“No.”

Elena stared.

“After the wedding, I moved into this house. Dante stayed at his.”

“But the photographs—”

“Scheduled.”

“Galas?”

“Scheduled.”

“Christmas at the Moretti estate?”

“Four hours.”

Elena felt sick.

“The honeymoon?”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“There was no honeymoon.”

Elena remembered sitting in Zurich believing Dante was somewhere with Victoria.

“I thought—”

“I know what you thought.”

“You let me.”

Victoria’s eyes hardened.

“You disappeared before I could explain anything.”

“You had years.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“Because Dad made me promise I wouldn’t.”

“Dad is dead now.”

“Yes.”

“And I’m done protecting him.”

The sentence settled between them.

Elena leaned back.

“Why did you agree to marry Dante?”

Victoria walked to the window.

“Because Dad offered me Bennett Holdings.”

Elena stared at her.

Victoria did not turn around.

“He spent our entire childhood preparing a son he never had. When he finally accepted that his daughters were all he had, he chose you.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

“Dad and I fought constantly.”

“Because you were the only one he respected enough to fight with.”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“I did everything right. Business school. The internships he chose. The people he wanted me to know. I stayed in Chicago while you traveled and built your own life.”

Elena said nothing.

“Then the company started collapsing. Dad came to me and said if I agreed to the Moretti marriage, Bennett Holdings would eventually be mine.”

“So you said yes.”

“Yes.”

“Even though you knew I loved Dante.”

Victoria turned.

“Yes.”

There was no excuse in her voice.

No attempt to soften it.

“I knew it would destroy you.”

Elena’s eyes burned.

“And you did it anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted what he was offering more than I wanted to be a good sister.”

The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

Elena stood.

“I should hate you.”

“You should.”

“I did hate you.”

“I know.”

“Maybe I still do.”

Victoria nodded.

“I know.”

Elena moved toward the door.

Then Victoria spoke.

“There’s something else.”

Elena stopped.

“Of course there is.”

“Dad’s death.”

She turned.

“What about it?”

Victoria picked up another folder.

“He called me two nights before he died.”

Elena’s pulse changed.

“What did he say?”

“He wanted out.”

“Out of what?”

“The agreement. The debt. Everything.”

“The debt was settled years ago.”

“The money was. The leverage wasn’t.”

Victoria handed her a page.

It was a record of calls.

One number appeared repeatedly.

Elena recognized the name beside it.

Vincent Moretti.

“Dad was talking to Vincent?”

“For months.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Dante?”

“No.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because Dante hates Vincent.”

Elena looked up.

“They’re family.”

“That means less in the Moretti family than you think.”

Victoria sat again.

“Dad said he had proof Vincent manipulated the original debt and used Bennett Holdings to move money without Dante’s knowledge.”

“What kind of money?”

“I didn’t ask.”

“Why not?”

“Because Dad sounded terrified.”

Elena stared at the call log.

“When did he die?”

“The next night.”

“You told me it was a heart attack.”

“That’s what the report says.”

“You don’t believe it?”

Victoria hesitated.

“I did.”

“And now?”

“Yesterday I found something else.”

She pulled a small flash drive from her pocket.

“This was taped beneath the bottom drawer of his safe.”

“What’s on it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You didn’t open it?”

“It’s encrypted.”

Elena took it.

“Then why give it to me?”

“Because the password hint is your name.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Elena?”

“No.”

Victoria slid a piece of paper across the table.

The handwritten hint read:

THE ONE THING SHE NEVER KNEW.

Elena stared at it.

A chill traveled down her spine.

“Did Dad know I was coming back?”

“He requested you personally handle his remains.”

“Why?”

“I think he wanted you to find this.”

Elena looked at the flash drive.

Then another realization came.

“At the airport.”

“What?”

“Dante was there before he knew I was in Chicago.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was meeting someone.”

“Who?”

“Charles Whitmore.”

Elena’s head snapped up.

“My father’s lawyer?”

Victoria’s expression darkened.

“Dante had already started investigating Dad’s death.”

Elena stared at her.

“So seeing Leo really was an accident.”

“Yes.”

For some reason, that frightened her more.

Because it meant two separate secrets had collided at O’Hare.

Her son.

And her father’s death.

Victoria’s phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

All color drained from her face.

“What?”

Victoria turned the phone toward Elena.

A photograph had arrived from an unknown number.

It had been taken through the Bennett house window that morning.

Leo was visible inside.

Playing with Dante on the living room rug.

Beneath it was one sentence.

Dante has his father’s weakness after all.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Who sent this?”

Victoria didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Elena looked again at the photograph of her son.

Then at the name on Richard’s call log.

Vincent Moretti.
