"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Son" Chapter 10 — The Ring He Never Gave Me
The ring was exactly where Dante said it would be.
Elena found it the next morning.
The safe stood behind a panel in his private study.
Inside were property documents, cash, two passports, a handgun she deliberately ignored, and a small black box.
Her hands trembled when she opened it.
A diamond ring rested inside.
Not enormous.
Not theatrical.
Elegant.
Simple.
Exactly what twenty-three-year-old Elena would have chosen.
Beneath the box was a receipt.
Seven years before Dante married Victoria.
Elena sat down.
For years she had imagined that Dante never wanted a future with her.
Now she was holding evidence that he had once planned one.
It did not erase what he had done.
That was the problem.
Love had existed.
So had betrayal.
Both were true.
Dante appeared in the doorway.
He stopped when he saw the box.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
He did not come closer.
Elena looked at the ring.
“Why this one?”
“You once stopped outside a jewelry store on Michigan Avenue.”
Her eyes lifted.
“I did?”
“You said big diamonds looked like they were trying too hard.”
A laugh escaped her.
“I said that?”
“You also said if a man needed a stone the size of a doorknob to prove he loved you, he probably didn’t.”
“That sounds like me.”
“It does.”
She closed the box.
Dante’s expression tightened.
“You’re not going to ask me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that ring became a promise I never gave you.”
Elena stared.
Dante leaned against the doorway.
“If I ask now because we have a son, I’m doing it wrong.”
Her chest tightened.
“If I ask because you learned the truth about Victoria, I’m doing it wrong.”
He looked at the box.
“And if I ask before you know whether you can forgive me, I’m doing it wrong again.”
Elena stood.
“So what happens?”
“You choose.”
There it was.
The thing she had demanded from him for years.
Not protection.
Not sacrifice.
Choice.
Before she could answer, Nico entered.
His face made both of them turn.
“We found Vincent.”
Dante’s expression changed.
“Where?”
“Moretti Club.”
“Who’s with him?”
“Half the old guard.”
Dante took his jacket.
Elena stood.
“I’m coming.”
His instinct appeared instantly.
“No.”
She raised an eyebrow.
Dante stopped.
He exhaled.
“Do you understand the risk?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still want to come?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Then stay beside me.”
It was the first time Elena remembered Dante asking instead of commanding.
The Moretti Club occupied the top floor of an old River North building.
When Elena entered beside Dante, conversation stopped.
Vincent stood near the windows.
Victoria was already there.
Elena froze.
“What are you doing here?”
Victoria lifted a folder.
“Finishing what I started.”
Vincent laughed.
“The Bennett sisters reunited. Richard would be touched.”
Victoria’s face remained cold.
“You should worry less about our father and more about his accounting.”
She dropped the folder onto the table.

Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Signatures.
Dante addressed the men in the room.
“Vincent used Moretti companies to manufacture Bennett’s debt. Then he bought that debt through intermediaries.”
Vincent smiled.
“You believe Richard Bennett?”
“I believe numbers.”
Nico distributed copies.
Men began reading.
Vincent’s smile faded.
Dante continued.
“For three years, he used the alliance with Bennett Holdings to hide transfers I never authorized.”
One of the older men looked up.
“Is this true?”
Vincent shrugged.
“Dante has become sentimental.”
His eyes moved toward Elena.
“First a woman. Now a child.”
Dante’s hands tightened.
Elena touched his wrist.
He looked at her.
Not a command.
A reminder.
Don’t let him choose for you either.
Dante relaxed his hand.
Vincent noticed.
“So that’s it?”
He laughed.
“The great Dante Moretti takes instructions from Elena Bennett now?”
“No,” Dante said.
“She reminds me when I’m about to make a stupid decision.”
A few men almost smiled.
Vincent did not.
Victoria stepped forward.
“There’s more.”
She produced the flash drive.
Charles had finally broken the encryption.
The files contained Richard’s recordings of conversations with Vincent.
Enough to prove coercion.
Enough to prove fraud.
And enough to establish that Vincent had threatened Richard shortly before his death.
But not murder.
The medical examiner’s supplemental review confirmed Richard had suffered a genuine cardiac event.
Vincent had not poisoned him.
Had not ordered a hit.
The truth was less dramatic and somehow crueler.
Richard had died frightened, under pressure from the trap he had helped create.
Vincent had pushed him.
But Richard’s own choices had brought him there.
For Elena, that mattered.
She did not need another convenient villain to carry all her father’s sins.
Vincent looked around the room.
The men who had once supported him no longer met his eyes.
“You think this ends me?”
Dante’s voice was calm.
“No.”
He placed one final document on the table.
“But the federal investigators downstairs might.”
Vincent’s face changed.
Elena looked at Dante.
“You called the authorities?”
“My world has taken enough from your family.”
Vincent stared at him.
“You’d hand your own blood to the government?”
Dante looked toward Elena.
Then Victoria.
Then back at his cousin.
“Blood isn’t permission.”
Minutes later, Vincent was escorted from the building.
No gunfight.
No execution.
No body on a floor.
Just a man discovering that power disappeared very quickly when everyone stopped being afraid of him.
Outside, Victoria stood beside Elena.
Chicago traffic moved below them.
“What happens to us?” Victoria asked.
Elena looked at her sister.
“I don’t know.”
Victoria nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“That doesn’t fix it.”
“No.”
Victoria looked down.
“I did choose the company over you.”
“Yes.”
“I wish I hadn’t.”
Elena studied her.
“Maybe someday that will be enough for us to start somewhere.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“Someday?”
“Don’t push it.”
Victoria laughed through her tears.
It was the first sound Elena remembered loving about her sister.
That evening, Elena returned to the Moretti house.
Her suitcase was waiting near the stairs.
Dante saw it.
“You’re leaving.”
“Tomorrow.”
His face tightened.
But he nodded.
“I had Nico confirm the flight.”
Elena blinked.
“You booked it?”
“No. Mia did.”
“And you didn’t cancel it?”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“I considered it.”
“I’m sure.”
“I also considered buying the airline.”
“Dante.”
“I didn’t.”
She almost laughed.
He handed her an envelope.
Inside were three first-class tickets to Zurich.
Elena stared.
“One for you. One for Leo. One for Mia.”
“You’re giving me plane tickets?”
“You said Zurich is his home.”
Dante’s voice remained steady.
“I don’t know what happens next. I know I want to be his father. I know I want you.”
He swallowed.
“But I’m not going to trap you in Chicago to get either.”
Elena looked at the tickets.
“You’re really letting me go.”
“No.”
She looked up.
Dante’s eyes were wet.
“I’m choosing not to stop you.”
That was different.
And both of them knew it.
The next morning, Dante drove Elena and Leo to O’Hare.
The same airport where everything had begun.
At security, Leo hugged him.
“Come to Zurich.”
Dante closed his eyes.
“If your mom says I can.”
Leo looked at Elena.
“Mom?”
“Not today.”
Dante smiled sadly.
“Your mom said not today.”
Leo seemed satisfied.
“Tomorrow?”
“We’ll negotiate.”
Leo hugged him again.
Elena took her suitcase.
Dante did not ask her to stay.
Did not touch her.
Did not pull out the ring.
He simply said:
“Goodbye, Elena.”
She walked toward security.
For eight years, she had wanted Dante Moretti to stop her from leaving.
Now he finally loved her enough not to.
