"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Son" Chapter 11 — Ask Me Again
“Is Dad coming later?”
Leo asked the question at Gate C17.
Elena looked up from her phone.
“What?”
Leo was sitting beside Mia, holding the repaired airplane.
“Dad.”
His use of the word no longer sounded accidental.
“Is he coming to our house?”
Mia quietly became fascinated by the departures screen.
Elena crouched.
“Would you like him to?”
Leo nodded.
“He doesn’t have toys in Zurich.”
“That is a serious problem.”
“He can bring dinosaurs.”
“Also possible.”
Leo frowned.
“Why doesn’t Dad live with us?”
There it was.
Another question with no three-year-old answer.
“Because Mommy and Daddy have things to figure out.”
“Are you mad?”
Elena smiled sadly.
“A little.”
“At Dad?”
“At Dad. At Grandpa. At Aunt Victoria.”
Leo considered this.
“Are you mad at me?”
Her heart broke.
“Never.”
She hugged him.
“Never, ever.”
Leo wrapped his arms around her neck.
“Then Dad can come?”
Children made everything sound simple.
Maybe that was why adults spent so much time complicating it.
Elena sat beside Mia after Leo returned to the window.
Mia waited.
Finally Elena said, “Say it.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You’re thinking loudly.”
Mia smiled.
“You don’t have to forgive him today.”
“I know.”
“You also don’t have to punish yourself forever because forgiving him might look weak.”
Elena looked toward the runway.
“I built a life in Zurich.”
“Yes.”
“I like that life.”
“I know.”
“Leo likes it.”
“Yes.”
Mia paused.
“But?”
Elena hated her.
“But I spent three years believing Dante chose Victoria.”
“He didn’t.”
“He still lied.”
“Yes.”
“He still made decisions for me.”
“Yes.”
“He hurt me.”
“Yes.”
Elena looked at her.
“You’re terrible at this.”
“You didn’t bring me for emotional support. You brought me because I can carry two suitcases and a toddler at the same time.”
Elena laughed.
Then her smile disappeared.
“What if he does it again?”
Mia shrugged.
“Then you leave again.”
“That’s your advice?”
“My advice is that this time you know you can.”
The boarding announcement began.
Elena’s stomach tightened.
Passengers stood.
Leo grabbed his backpack.
“Airplane!”
Elena did not move.
Three years ago, she had boarded a plane because staying in Chicago felt impossible.
Today she was about to board because leaving felt safer.
There was a difference.
Safety was not always the same as choice.
“Mom?”
Elena looked at Leo.
Then at the gate.
Then at her phone.
No messages from Dante.
Of course not.
He had finally learned not to chase her.
Damn him.
“Mia.”
Her friend smiled before Elena said anything.
“Oh, thank God.”
“What?”
“I really didn’t want to spend nine hours listening to you pretend you weren’t going to regret this.”
Elena stood.
“We’re not moving back.”
“I didn’t say we were.”
“I’m not marrying him.”
“Didn’t say that either.”
“I haven’t forgiven him.”
“Elena.”
“What?”
“Go.”
Forty minutes later, Dante stood in his kitchen staring at a cup of coffee he had forgotten to drink.

The house was silent again.
No dinosaurs on the floor.
No toy airplane noises.
No Leo asking whether a T. rex could beat a shark.
He hated it.
Nico entered.
“You want me to drive you to the office?”
“No.”
“You want company?”
“No.”
“You want me to stop asking questions?”
“Yes.”
Nico nodded.
Then the front door opened.
Dante reached for the weapon beneath the counter.
Nico turned.
Small footsteps thundered across the marble.
“Dad!”
Dante froze.
Leo came flying into the kitchen.
Dante barely had time to crouch before his son crashed into him.
He caught him.
“What—”
Leo hugged his neck.
“We didn’t go.”
Dante looked toward the doorway.
Mia stood there holding three suitcases.
Beside her was Elena.
Dante slowly stood with Leo in his arms.
“What happened?”
Elena looked at him.
“I forgot something.”
His eyes moved to the luggage.
“What?”
She stepped closer.
“Eight years ago, I kept asking you the wrong question.”
Dante said nothing.
“I kept asking if you would marry me.”
“Elena—”
“Put Leo down.”
He did.
Mia immediately took the boy’s hand.
“Come on, dinosaur expert. I hear there are about four hundred upstairs.”
“Ankylosaurus!”
“Yes. Those too.”
They disappeared.
Dante and Elena were alone.
He looked almost afraid.
Good.
She had been afraid enough for both of them.
“You still have the ring?”
“Yes.”
“Get it.”
Dante stared.
“Elena.”
“I didn’t say propose.”
He closed his mouth.
Then went upstairs.
When he returned, the black box was in his hand.
He stopped several feet away.
Elena looked at it.
“That ring belonged to a woman who spent years waiting for you to decide her future.”
Dante’s face tightened.
“I’m not her anymore.”
“I know.”
“So if you ask me anything today, you ask me. Not the woman from eight years ago.”
He nodded.
“Not Leo’s mother.”
Another nod.
“Not Richard Bennett’s daughter. Not Victoria’s sister. Not the woman you think needs protecting.”
Dante’s eyes never left hers.
“Just me.”
“Elena.”
She took a breath.
“Ask me again.”
His hand tightened around the box.
For once, Dante Moretti had no prepared words.
No strategy.
No contract.
No family agreement.
He opened the box.
Then stopped.
“I don’t want to ask you the old question.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
“I spent years thinking marriage was the answer.”
He closed the box again.
“I was wrong.”
She stared at him.
Dante stepped closer.
“Do you want a life with me, Elena?”
Her breath caught.
“Not because of Leo.”
Another step.
“Not because of our families.”
He was close now.
“Not because of the eight years we already lost.”
His voice softened.
“Because you choose it.”
Elena felt tears rise.
This was what she had wanted.
Not a diamond.
Not the Moretti name.
Not a public wedding.
A choice.
“Yes.”
Dante stopped breathing.
Elena smiled through her tears.
“Yes. I want a life with you.”

He touched her face.
Then stopped himself.
“Can I?”
She laughed.
“You’re asking permission to kiss me?”
“I’m learning.”
“Slowly.”
“Very slowly.”
“Yes.”
He kissed her.
There was no audience.
No contract.
No photographer.
No ivory invitation.
Just the man she had loved, the man she had hated, and the man who finally understood that loving her did not mean choosing for her.
When they separated, Dante opened the ring box again.
Elena looked at it.
“You can ask that one too.”
His mouth almost curved.
“Elena Bennett.”
“Yes?”
“Will you marry me?”
She let him wait.
Three seconds.
Four.
Dante narrowed his eyes.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“Eight years, Dante.”
“That seems excessive.”
“You survived.”
“Barely.”
She held out her hand.
“Yes.”
Months later, Elena still had her apartment in Zurich.
Dante still had his house in Chicago.
They divided their time.
It was inconvenient.
Complicated.
Real.
Victoria remained in Chicago and took control of Bennett Holdings after cooperating fully with investigators.
She and Elena spoke once a week.
Some conversations lasted five minutes.
Some ended badly.
But neither stopped calling.
Dante dismantled several parts of the Moretti organization that had allowed Vincent to build power unnoticed.
He never became harmless.
Elena never asked him to pretend he was.
She only demanded that the life touching her and Leo contain no lies.
One Sunday morning in Lincoln Park, Elena walked into the kitchen and found Leo sitting at the breakfast table.
Dante stood at the counter making coffee.
“You’re doing it wrong,” Elena said.
Dante looked offended.
“I’ve been making coffee longer than you’ve been drinking it.”
“And somehow you’re still doing it wrong.”
Leo looked from his mother to his father.
Then his small forehead creased.
Exactly like Dante’s.
Elena stopped.
Dante noticed.
“What?”
She pointed at Leo.
“That.”
“What?”
“The face.”
Leo frowned harder.
Dante frowned too.
They looked identical.
Elena started laughing.
Neither understood why.
Three years earlier, she had left Chicago carrying a secret.
She had believed distance could protect her son from the man she loved and protect herself from the woman she had once been.
Maybe it had.
For a while.
But protection had never been the same thing as living.
Dante placed her coffee on the table.
This time, he had made it exactly right.
Leo pushed a plastic ankylosaurus between them.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can dinosaurs get married?”
Dante looked at Elena.
She raised one eyebrow.
“Careful.”
He smiled.
“I’ve learned my lesson.”
Leo waited.
Dante considered the question.
“Only if both dinosaurs say yes.”
Elena laughed.
“That’s the correct answer.”
Dante reached for her hand beneath the table.
She let him take it.
Not because he demanded it.
Not because their families arranged it.
Not because they shared a son.
Because she wanted to.
Because this time, when Dante Moretti offered her a future, he finally understood that the future was hers to choose.
And Elena chose him.
