"My arch-nemesis is dead, but I see him every night." Chapter 7
An Offer I Could Refuse
For a moment, I wondered whether I had heard the amount correctly.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
That would cover rent, replace my aging laptop, and leave enough for several months without worrying about clients who treated payment deadlines as gentle suggestions.
Then I looked at the two mugs on the counter.
Julian’s was beside mine. There was still a little tea in it.
“What makes you think I’d know?” I asked.
Grant gave a quiet, agreeable laugh.
“You’ve been friends for a long time.”
“Then you should know he doesn’t tell me everything.”
“I’m not asking for everything. Just whether he’s contacted you since the accident.”
I leaned against the counter and glanced at the time. Julian had left eleven minutes ago.
Grant had chosen his moment well enough to make my skin prickle.
“And if I say he hasn’t?”
“Then I’d ask you to keep me informed if that changes.”
“Twenty-five thousand for answering a phone call?”
“For helping me establish the truth.”
He spoke as if truth were something he could order and have delivered.
I thought of Julian smiling on my living-room floor. His hand beneath mine. The faint scar I had touched.
The evening had been mine until this man called.
I resented him for that before I even decided what to do about the money.
“Send the details in writing,” I said.
Grant paused.
“You’re interested?”
“I’m a freelancer. I don’t agree to work without seeing what someone expects.”
He seemed to like that answer. He asked for an email address, and I gave him the one printed on my professional website.
Before hanging up, he suggested we keep the conversation between ourselves.
I told him I would read the proposal.
That was the only promise he got.
***
I called Julian immediately.
He answered while I was still looking at his mug.
“Did I leave something?”
“Your tea. But that isn’t why I’m calling.”
His voice changed when I said Grant’s name.
I explained the offer, keeping close to what had actually been said. Julian listened without interrupting. By the time I finished, I could hear a car indicator clicking through the phone.
“Are you turning around?”
“I’d like to come back.”
“Then come back. You can see the email if it arrives.”
He asked whether the door was locked. I checked, told him it was, and waited at the counter with my phone in my hand.
The email arrived before he did.
It contained no mention of death, accidents, or twenty-five thousand dollars. Grant described a confidential consulting opportunity and asked to meet the following day.
I read it twice.
Then I stopped reading and looked at my own reflection in the dark kitchen window.
I still had a faint smile on my face from the evening.
That made me angrier.
***
Julian knocked nine minutes later.
I opened the door, and his eyes went first to my face, then past me into the apartment.
“Nothing’s happened,” I said. “I’m still here, and the most suspicious object in the room is your toolbox.”
He looked down. He had forgotten it beside the door.
The sight seemed to bring him back to himself.
“Show me the message.”
I handed him the phone.
He read it standing in the kitchen. The softness from earlier had disappeared from his expression, replaced by a concentration I had seen occasionally when he took work calls.
For the first time, I understood why people might be intimidated by him.
I also understood how little of that version he usually brought into my apartment.
“Is he the reason you disappeared?” I asked.
“He’s one of the people we’ve been investigating. We didn’t have enough to act on everything we suspected.”
“Now he’s offering me money to find you.”
Julian set down the phone.
“I want to speak to the people handling security. You may need somewhere else to stay for a few nights.”
I folded my arms.
“Are you asking me, or have you already decided?”
He stopped.
I watched him work out what I meant.
“Neither, yet,” he said. “I’m worried, and I’m thinking too quickly.”
That was a better answer than I expected.
He pulled out a stool but didn’t sit.
“Let me make the call. Then we can discuss the options.”
I nodded.
***
The call was short.
Julian forwarded the email with my permission, then spoke to someone named Martin, who asked to hear Grant’s exact wording. I repeated it while Julian held the phone between us.
There was nothing dramatic about Martin’s voice. He sounded practical and tired, which I found reassuring.
He told me not to meet Grant or respond further that night. The contact could have been an attempt to test whether I knew anything, but he wanted it documented.
Afterward, Julian leaned against the counter.
“We can arrange a place to stay. Miles’s would be an option if you’re comfortable there. So would a hotel.”
“And your place?”
His eyes met mine.
“I didn’t want you to think I was using this as a reason to get you there.”
The answer warmed me in the middle of a conversation that had no business doing so.
I looked away.
“I’m not moving in tonight,” I said. “I have work tomorrow, and I’d rather hear what Martin recommends after he’s read everything.”
“Then we’ll wait for that.”
Julian rubbed the back of his neck. He looked older than he had an hour earlier.
I reached for his hand before I could overthink it.
He looked down, surprised.
“You’re doing that thing where you assume worrying hard enough will prevent anything from happening.”
“It hasn’t been especially effective.”
“I noticed.”
His fingers closed around mine.
We stood beside the counter for a while. I had called him because I needed help understanding the offer, not because I wanted to surrender the rest of my evening to it.

Eventually, I tugged his hand.
“Sit down. We can be concerned on the floor.”
***
He sat beside me on the blanket.
The television was still displaying the game menu, cheerfully oblivious to the situation. I switched it off.
Julian glanced at our joined hands.
“Are you all right with this?”
“The hand-holding, or the attempted recruitment?”
“The evening getting interrupted.”
I thought about it.
“I’m annoyed. I was enjoying myself.”
His mouth softened.
“So was I.”
I felt suddenly shy, which was inconvenient after having already kissed him several times.
I leaned against his shoulder instead of finding an answer.
For a few minutes, he let me.
Then I said, “For the record, the money was tempting.”
“I would have been surprised if it wasn’t.”
“I thought about my laptop.”
“You’ve been complaining about it for a year.”
“And rent. And a vacation somewhere nobody knows what a revision request is.”
He looked at me.
I lifted our joined hands slightly.
“I didn’t think about giving him you.”
Julian went still.
The change was small, but I felt it through his fingers.
I hadn’t prepared that sentence. It had simply been true, and saying it made me understand my decision more clearly.
He turned toward me, close enough that I could see the tension leaving his face.
I kissed him before he could turn it into something I would have to answer.
It was brief, but less hesitant than the first one. His hand came to rest at the back of my neck, and I stayed near him when we separated.
Apparently, my confusion did not prevent me from developing preferences.
One of them was Julian looking at me like that.
***
We agreed he would stay until morning, in the living room.
There was no couch, which limited the dignity of the arrangement.
I brought him a spare quilt and a pillow. He accepted both without suggesting that my bed offered an obvious solution.
I was grateful. I wasn’t ready to make every decision in one night.
At the bedroom door, I looked back.
He had taken off his sweater and was arranging the quilt over the blanket. His phone lay within reach.
“Julian?”
He looked up immediately.
“I’m still expecting dinner on Friday. Don’t let this become another thing we keep postponing.”
His expression softened.
“I’ll be there.”
I went to bed with the door open.
Knowing he was on the other side of it felt different now.
I had asked him to stay.
***
By morning, Martin had recommended caution, routine check-ins, and a few temporary changes to my travel. Julian arranged a driver for the next couple of days after asking whether I would accept it.
I agreed because being stubborn about a car seemed less appealing than being stubborn about everything else.
We had breakfast at the counter. Julian burned one piece of toast and blamed the toaster.
I ate the other piece and declined to investigate.
He left first, taking the toolbox this time. I watched him go, then received a message before he reached the street.
Friday, seven. I’m looking forward to it.
I smiled at the phone and put it away.
At the office, Dana passed me a coffee without comment. I must have looked better than usual, because she studied me twice before asking whether I had finally slept.
I told her I had.
That afternoon, an account representative from a client called about a last-minute packaging change. They wanted me to look at a physical sample before production and asked whether I could stop by their temporary workspace.
The email arrived with the familiar project name, artwork I recognized, and the address of a converted industrial building.
I forwarded the location to Julian, checked that the arranged driver could take me, and packed my laptop.
For the first time in weeks, I had something pleasant waiting beyond work.
I intended to finish quickly and get home.
