"My Husband Swore He Never Touched Me. Then Who Got Me Pregnant?" Chapter 4 — My Sister Came Back from the Dead
Chapter 4 — My Sister Came Back from the Dead
“You really thought they buried me in that empty coffin?”
Evelyn reached for the call button.
Audrey caught the cord and pulled it out of reach.
“Yes, I’m alive,” she said. “No, Nathaniel didn’t spend those weeks believing I was lying at the bottom of the river. Your father surrendered the company because he thought he was protecting you from a murder investigation. It worked beautifully.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“You changed the messages.”
Audrey smiled.
“You confessed to sending them.”
“You made him believe I threatened you.”
“You should ask him what he believed.”
Audrey pulled the visitor’s chair closer and sat.
Evelyn tried to stand, but pain caught beneath the dressing on her abdomen. She lowered herself slowly, refusing to let Audrey see her wince.
“Give me my phone.”
“What are you going to do? Tell your lawyer you lied? I’m sure she’ll be delighted.”
“She warned me.”
“And you didn’t listen. That seems to be a habit.”
Evelyn picked up the paper she had written for Julian.
Audrey glanced at the words.
“Still collecting answers?”
“Who sent the man into the operating room?”
“Nathaniel’s signature was on the authorization.”
“I asked who sent him.”
For the first time, Audrey’s smile slipped.
Then she leaned back.
“You’re getting sharper. A little late, but it’s something.”
Evelyn folded the paper and placed it beneath her pillow.
Audrey watched the movement.
“Your father used to do that,” she said. “Put important things out of sight and pretend nobody else knew they existed.”
“Don’t speak about my father.”
“Why? He was mine, too.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Evelyn gripped the bed rail.
Audrey waited, enjoying the silence.
“My mother was good enough to keep in an apartment across town,” she continued. “Good enough to call when he was lonely. But when she had a daughter, suddenly there was his reputation to consider.”
“No.”
“You had birthday parties. I had promises. You got a bedroom in his house. I got told that things were complicated.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Audrey laughed.
“What would you have done? Invited me for Christmas? Explained to Marianne that your father had another family?”
Evelyn looked at the familiar face.
She could see it now, and hated that she could.
Richard’s eyes.
The same small crease beside the mouth.
“Does Nathaniel know?”
“Of course.”
The answer hurt more than Evelyn expected.
He had known something about her family that she had not. He had watched her argue with Audrey, watched her make a fool of herself, and said nothing.
“He knows what Richard did,” Audrey said. “To my mother. To his family. You were the only person still pretending your father was a good man.”
“My father’s mistakes don’t explain what you did to me.”
“No. But they explain why nobody stopped me.”
Evelyn pushed herself upright.

“I want you out.”
Audrey opened her handbag.
“There’s one more thing you should understand. That night after the kidnapping—the one you keep insisting Nathaniel remembers?”
Evelyn’s mouth went dry.
“He told you he never touched you.”
“He did.”
“You woke up beside him. That isn’t the same thing.”
Evelyn remembered a glass of water held against her lips. A hand retreating when she flinched. A voice asking whether she wanted the light left on.
She held on to those details.
“You weren’t there.”
“I arranged it.”
The words settled between them.
Audrey watched her closely.
“Two women disappear. Nathaniel has to choose where to go first. You should have seen how quickly he came for me.”
Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the sheet.
“He came for me, too.”
“Eventually.”
“You’re lying.”
“About which part?”
Audrey took a photograph from her bag.
Evelyn looked away before she could see it clearly.
“Take it out of here.”
“You asked about your baby.”
The words forced her eyes back.
The photograph showed a small, still form beneath a hospital light. A label had been placed beside it.
Evelyn’s name was on the label.
She could not make herself read anything else.
“Where did you get that?”
“Someone thought you might want a keepsake.”
Evelyn took the photograph.
The edge bent beneath her fingers.
“I want to see my child.”
“There isn’t much to see now.”
Audrey stood.
“What did you do?”
Audrey paused at the door.
“There’s a service yard behind the west wing. Things get left there before collection.”
Evelyn stared.
“Don’t.”
Audrey’s face hardened.
“You got everything, Evelyn. Even him. You could have left one thing alone.”
She opened the door.
“Ask for a bag if you go down there.”
Evelyn did not remember putting on her shoes.
She remembered the elevator taking too long.
She remembered a cleaner trying to stop her and asking whether she was supposed to be out of bed.
By the service entrance, a cart had been overturned near the bins.
There were torn bags.
Stray dogs scattered when she approached.
Something small lay among the refuse, partly wrapped in stained cloth.
Evelyn dropped to her knees.
“No.”
She reached for it.
A dog snapped at her hand. She pushed it away without looking.
Someone shouted behind her.
She gathered the cloth against her chest.
When Nathaniel arrived, she was trying to unfold it.
He knelt beside her.
“Evelyn.”
She looked at him.
He stopped reaching.
“What is this?”
“What did you let her do?”
His eyes moved to the bundle.
Then to the photograph beside her knee.
“Where did you get that?”
“She came here.”
“Who?”
Evelyn struck him across the face.
“Audrey.”
He did not move.
“You buried an empty coffin. You let me confess. You let me sit in a cell while she walked around outside.”
“Give that to me.”
“No.”
“Evelyn, that isn’t—”

“You don’t get to tell me what I’m holding.”
She bent over the bundle.
Nathaniel took off his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.
She threw it off.
A nurse arrived with a wheelchair.
Evelyn began to scream when they tried to separate her from the cloth.
By evening, Claire was beside her bed.
Audrey’s return had set everything in motion. Calls were made. Her custody status was reviewed. The hospital took photographs of Evelyn’s injuries and preserved what had been found in the service yard.
Claire asked careful questions.
Evelyn answered the ones she could.
When Claire asked about the bundle, Evelyn stopped speaking.
Nathaniel waited outside.
He did not leave when visiting hours ended.
Neither did Julian.
Days passed.
Evelyn ate when someone put food in her hand. She slept in short stretches, waking with the conviction that she had forgotten to feed a child.
Claire arranged for her to stay somewhere independent after discharge.
Nathaniel told her the apartment was not ready.
Rosa told her the river house would be quiet.
Evelyn was too tired to argue with both of them.
She let them take her home.
The nursery had never been finished.
Evelyn sat on its floor with the gift box from the night of the bridge.
She placed the ultrasound photograph inside.
Then she closed the lid.
Nathaniel found her there.
“You haven’t eaten.”
“Leave the plate.”
He stood in the doorway.
“Audrey won’t come here.”
“You said she was dead.”
“I know.”
“Did you know when you brought me to the bridge?”
His silence lasted too long.
Evelyn looked up.
“Get out.”
“We need to talk.”
“I’ve asked you a question.”
“I can’t explain everything tonight.”
“Then get out tonight.”
He came toward her.
She rose, holding the box.
He reached for her elbow.
“Don’t touch me.”
“You’re shaking.”
“I know what my body is doing.”
She moved past him.
He caught her arm before she reached the door.
“Evelyn, stop.”
Something broke inside her at the command.
She tried to pull free.
He held tighter.
She struck at his chest with the box. The lid flew open. The photograph slid across the floor.
Nathaniel looked down.
Evelyn twisted out of his grip and ran into the adjoining study.
He followed.
She grabbed the letter opener from the desk.
“Stay back.”
He stopped.
“Put it down.”
“Leave me alone.”
“Please.”
He reached toward her.
She swung blindly when his hand closed over hers.
He made a short sound.
Then both of them looked down.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Evelyn let go.
Nathaniel staggered against the desk.
For a second, she could not breathe.
He looked at her without anger.
That was worse.
“Evelyn—”
She ran.
Rosa called her name from the stairs.
Evelyn took the car keys from the entrance table and reached the garage before anyone caught up.
The engine started.
She drove without putting on her coat.
Rain thickened across the windshield.
By the time she reached the bridge, she could no longer distinguish tears from the water leaking through the open window.
She saw the place where Nathaniel had held her.
She heard herself telling him they were going to be parents.
Her hands went slack on the wheel.
The car struck the barrier.
For one suspended moment, there was nothing beneath her.
Then the river rose to meet her.
