"Our Marriage Contract Expired. My Billionaire Husband Wouldn’t Let Me Go." Chapter 3
The Wife He Wouldn't Surrender
Audrey went home carrying a box of old sketchbooks.
Julian found her spreading them across the dining table after Poppy was asleep. He took one look at her face and pulled out a chair.
"Show me."
"I've already asked a lawyer to review it."
"I didn't ask whether you could handle it. I asked what happened."
She hesitated, then turned the laptop toward him.
He read the accusation without moving. When he reached the comments about her father's conviction, his hand tightened beside the keyboard.
"Don't read those," she said.
"You read them."
"And I wish I hadn't."
He closed the comments.
"What do we have?"
We. Such a small word. She tried not to let it mean too much.
She showed him the sketches. He held the pages carefully, studying notes she had made before the polished design existed.
"These prove the development," he said.
"They help. I also remember a student exhibition. If the university still has the catalog—"
"Call Elise. I'll drive you to the archive in the morning."
"You have a flight."
"Then Miles can drive."
"Julian."
He looked up.
"Thank you for helping without taking the whole thing away from me."
Something changed in his expression.
"I don't want your work, Audrey."
No, she thought. Only the rest of her life.
Before his departure, he kissed her forehead by the car. It was unexpectedly difficult not to follow him.
"Call me if anything happens," he said.
"You said you'd be busy."
"For you, I can answer."
She watched the car disappear and hated the hope that sentence gave her.
Elise found the printed exhibition catalog. Audrey's bracelet appeared months before Sophie's claimed creation date. Their lawyer sent the evidence with a demand for a correction.
Then Ryan sent a message.
He knew who had organized the complaints. He could make them stop. Meet him at a café beneath Renshaw Holdings, and he would explain everything.
Audrey went with a recording device and a determination not to cry.
Ryan admitted arranging the pressure because she otherwise wouldn't have listened to him. She demanded he retract it. He repeated the story about Julian's threats, then covered her hand as she stood to leave.
She pulled away.
A photographer caught the moment before she did.
By the following morning, the image was everywhere.
Billionaire's Wife Reunites with Former Lover.
The studio's statement cleared the design allegation. It couldn't make a still photograph move.
Ryan made matters worse by posting that he'd never stopped caring for her and that their separation had been forced. He described the café meeting as an encounter full of unresolved feeling.
Audrey read the statement with her mouth open.
He had turned her refusal into a love story and made himself its wounded hero.
She sent the complete recording to the lawyer, along with a request to preserve the photographer's original sequence if it could be obtained. She refused a draft response that apologized for embarrassing her husband.

"I won't apologize for a story I didn't tell," she said.
But by the time she returned home, the certainty she'd shown at work had begun to fail. Julian might hear Ryan's voice and believe his version. She could defend the meeting with evidence. She couldn't defend the way she'd felt when her husband stopped answering.
Julian didn't answer.
First she was angry. Then frightened. By the third call to Miles, she was ashamed of how badly she needed to hear her husband's voice.
"He's occupied," Miles said. "I gave him your message."
"Is he angry?"
"Mrs. Mercer—"
"Just tell me."
Miles paused too long.
She understood the pause as an answer.
At night, Audrey lay in their bed with her hand on Julian's pillow. It still carried the faint scent of his soap. She turned the pillow over, furious with herself, then held it anyway.
She had wanted to leave a man she thought indifferent.
Now his silence was teaching her how much she had depended on the attention he never named.
Thomas Bennett arrived the next afternoon.
Julian's foster father had never approved of her. He had been polite at Christmas, cool at the wedding, watchful whenever Poppy called him Grandpa.
Today, he didn't pretend politeness.
"Send the child upstairs."
Audrey did, asking the new nanny to keep Poppy occupied.
Mrs. Webb had left after admitting she'd passed household information to Harriet for money. Audrey had learned the reason from Julian before his trip. Another small breach inside a house she had thought secure.
Thomas sat opposite her.
"Do you know what this has done to him?"
"I didn't meet Ryan for the reason people think."
"I am discussing the result."
"The result was arranged by someone who wanted you to think exactly this."
He looked unimpressed.
"Is Poppy Julian's biological daughter?"
Her voice failed.
She had promised never to reveal the truth she believed. Her fear gave Thomas enough to draw his own conclusion.
"I see."
"No, you don't."
"Then explain it."
She thought of the pregnancy, the marriage, Julian's command that anyone who asked should be told the child was his.
"That's something you should discuss with your son."
Thomas's mouth tightened.
"If you care about him at all, let him go."
She had rehearsed leaving for weeks. She hadn't expected someone else's demand to make it feel like being discarded.
"I won't let you call my daughter a burden," she said.
"I haven't."
"You've been careful not to. The meaning is still there."
He stood.
"Pack what you need. I'll arrange a place until the separation is settled."
"She already has a place."
Julian's voice came from the doorway.
Audrey turned so quickly she nearly knocked over her cup.
He looked pale beneath the travel fatigue, his coat still damp from the rain. But his gaze was steady, and it stayed on her as he came into the room.
He held out his hand.
She took it before she could remember to be proud.
"Here," he said, seating her beside him. "With me."
Thomas began to object. Julian interrupted without raising his voice.
"I know about the café. I have the recording. She went to obtain evidence. Ryan manufactured the rest."
"You're prepared to believe that?"
"I'm prepared to listen to my wife before a stranger's headline."
Audrey's fingers tightened around his.
Thomas looked at their hands.
"And the child?"
"Is mine."
"Would you prove it?"
Julian didn't hesitate.
"Choose a laboratory. I'll give them whatever they need."
Audrey stared at him.
Thomas's certainty faltered. He took his coat after another brief exchange, promising that this discussion wasn't finished.
Julian watched the door close, then turned toward her.
She pulled her hand free only to grip his sleeve.
"You shouldn't have said that about the test."
"Why?"
"You know why."
He looked at her with an intensity that made the explanation die in her throat.
"Then tell me why you did any of this," she whispered. "The marriage. Poppy. Taking my side when it makes everything harder for you."
He touched her cheek.
"Do you really think I married you out of pity?"
Her heart stumbled.
"What else was I supposed to think?"
Julian leaned closer.
"Ask me what I wanted, Audrey. This time, I won't change the subject."
