"Our Marriage Contract Expired. My Billionaire Husband Wouldn’t Let Me Go." Chapter 10
A Debt She Would Collect
Ryan delivered the first archive through his lawyer that morning.
Copies were preserved before anyone began negotiating what they might mean for him. The old records and the altered versions could finally be examined together.
Audrey spent the afternoon with counsel, asking questions until she understood the difference between promising evidence and a completed case.
When she came home, Julian was waiting in the kitchen.
"You've forgotten lunch," he said.
"I've remembered something more important."
"Remember both."
He put a plate in front of her. She looked at the food, then at him.
"You cooked?"
"Try not to sound so astonished."
"I like being astonished by you when nobody has to be frightened first."
He accepted the answer with a faint smile.
She ate while he explained the next steps. When he sat beside her, she leaned against him, tired enough to stop making affection look accidental.
"I know this isn't finished," she said.
"No."
"But it feels like something finally moved."
He kissed the top of her head.
"It did."
The following morning, Renshaw arrived to complete the sale of Luma Jewelry.
It was a business he no longer wanted to support at the price its problems demanded. Julian wanted it for Audrey, but she had insisted on discussing a real operating plan before accepting the role he offered.
She would keep Sunward Studio and lead Luma's design work, learning the larger business alongside experienced managers. Elise and several trusted colleagues would join the transition.
A company wasn't a ribboned box. Audrey refused to pretend it was.
Renshaw signed the agreement with ill-disguised bitterness. He brought Ryan, apparently hoping an obedient employee might reassure Julian that their dispute had been contained.
Audrey entered just after the signing.
Ryan apologized for the design accusations and the photograph.
She stood across from him, holding her folder too tightly.
"Is that all you're apologizing for?"
Renshaw glanced between them and found a reason to leave. Ryan remained, his lawyer waiting downstairs for another meeting.
Audrey turned to Julian.
"I want to speak to him alone."
His expression hardened at once.
"You don't need to."
"I need to hear him say it to me."
"Audrey—"
She touched his sleeve.
"I'm not asking because I want anything back. I'm asking because he keeps speaking about me as if I won't be in the room when the consequences arrive."
Julian looked at her hand.
He wanted to refuse. She could see it.
Finally, he nodded.
"The conference room has a camera."
"Then tell him it's recording. I don't mind."
He did. Ryan agreed.
Audrey sat opposite the man she had once expected to marry. Julian watched from his office, where the live feed carried more risk than any document he'd signed that morning.
Ryan knew the other secret. One sentence could change what happened in that room.
Audrey didn't know that.

She asked him directly whether he'd helped Renshaw frame her father.
Ryan admitted taking the records. When she asked whether he'd known how they'd be used, he tried to explain Edward's disapproval of him.
She stopped him.
"My father didn't owe you a daughter because he gave you a job."
Ryan stared at her.
"He humiliated me."
"You could have resigned. You could have stopped seeing me. You chose to sell information."
"I never wanted your mother to die."
Her fingers went numb against the table.
"But you were happy to begin something you couldn't control."
Ryan looked away.
For a moment, the old urge to shake an answer out of him rose inside her. She folded her hands instead.
"When you came back, you said you still loved me. Did you think that would make me forget what happened to everyone around me?"
"I do love you."
"Then you've made that word mean something I don't want."
In his office, Julian looked down from the screen.
Audrey continued.
"You're going to give the investigators everything. You're going to tell them how you got it, what you changed, and who told you to do it. Not only the parts that make you useful to my husband."
"I'm trying to stay alive."
"Then cooperate properly. I want you alive to answer for it."
Ryan looked toward the camera.
Julian knew he was considering the hotel. He also knew Ryan needed the protection surrounding his cooperation more than he wanted one final act of revenge.
Ryan lowered his gaze.
"I'll give them the rest."
"Good."
Audrey stood.
"Don't mistake that for forgiveness."
She walked out without looking back.
Julian met her in the corridor. His hand hovered near her waist until she stepped into him.
"Take me somewhere," she said.
"Where?"
"Anywhere he isn't."
He drove her to the lake.
They walked with her shoes in one hand and his jacket around her shoulders. The wind pulled strands of hair across her face, and he moved them away when she couldn't spare a hand.
"I used to think I needed an explanation from him," she said.
"Did you get one?"
"I got a list of things he thought entitled him to hurt people."
Julian watched the water.
She stopped walking.
"Look at me."
He did.
"I don't want to spend the rest of my life measuring every man against him."
"Then don't."
"You're not helping when you keep deciding things for me."
His jaw shifted.
"I know."
"But you were here today. And when I asked you to let me speak, you did."
He looked down at her.
"I didn't enjoy it."
"I noticed."
For the first time all day, she smiled.
Julian touched her face.
"I'm not going to become an easy man, Audrey."
"I didn't ask for easy. I asked to know when you're holding on because you're afraid, instead of being told I have no choice."
He leaned his forehead against hers.
"I'm afraid more often than you'd enjoy knowing."
She kissed him, answering something he'd finally said plainly.
When they returned home, Poppy complained that they smelled like the outside. Audrey laughed while Julian carried their daughter upstairs, and the house felt less like the place she'd been saved in than a place she might choose.
Over the next two days, Ryan's remaining evidence was delivered and reviewed. Renshaw tried to reach him repeatedly. The lawyer documented the threats rather than letting Ryan handle them alone.
Then investigators moved.
Renshaw was taken into custody. Ryan surrendered with counsel present.
Audrey received the call in the studio and sat down before her legs gave way.
She called Julian.
"Is it enough for Dad?"
"It's enough to put the case back in front of the people who can reopen it."
She closed her eyes.
For the first time in years, waiting did not feel exactly like being abandoned.
