"I Saved a Dying Girl. She Was the Daughter I Never Knew." Chapter 2
The Letters I Never Received
"Tell me exactly what happened."
Marco lowered his voice. "Two men at the emergency entrance. They asked whether Elena Vasquez had been admitted. Security directed them toward reception. They saw Enzo's driver and left without checking in."
"Descriptions?"
"Dark coats. One kept his scarf over his face. We're getting the footage."
Hannah heard enough to stop writing.
"I'll tell security," she said. "Our staff controls access to the patient. Your men don't."
"Have Marco coordinate with them."
He nodded without argument.
I watched her call. For years I had mistaken obedience for competence. Here was a woman who hadn't agreed to a single unreasonable thing I asked, and I trusted her more with every passing minute.
"What do you know about Elena's family?" I asked afterward.
"Her grandmother is coming."
"Her mother?"
Hannah studied me. "Why?"
"Because the woman I knew was named Sofia."
She glanced at the information in front of her.
"Her mother's name is Sofia Vasquez."
I had known Sofia as Bennett, the name of the father she rarely discussed. Vasquez had been her mother's surname. Once, when we were young, she had told me she might use it herself someday.
I had said I preferred Mancini.
She had thrown a pillow at me and laughed.
The memory hit harder than the name.
An older woman hurried toward the desk, a gray coat hanging open, snow caught in her white hair. A teenage boy followed, clutching a knitted hat.
"Elena Vasquez," she said. "I'm her grandmother. Please tell me she's alive."
Hannah went to her at once.
"She's in surgery. The team is working on her, and additional blood is arriving."
The woman pressed a hand against the counter. "Thank God."
Then she saw me.
Her relief vanished.
"Who are you?"
"Luca Mancini."
The boy looked from her to me. "Grandma?"
"Sit by the elevators, Mateo."
"I want to stay."
"Please."
He obeyed, but he kept watching.
"Mrs. Vasquez?" I asked.
"Rosa."
"I need to ask you about Sofia."
"No."
"You recognized me."
"Everyone recognizes you."
"Not everyone looks as though I've come to take something from them."
Her fingers tightened around her purse.
"If you want money for helping, we have insurance."
"I don't want money."
"Then you need to leave."
Hannah stood beside her. "Mr. Mancini helped arrange the delayed delivery. He's also volunteered to be assessed as a donor for Elena's ongoing care."
Rosa looked toward the surgical doors. For a moment she seemed too tired to hold herself upright.
"Thank you," she whispered.
"Who is Elena's father?"
Her eyes came back to mine.
"She doesn't have one."
"That isn't what I asked."
"It's the only answer that has mattered to her."
Marco touched my elbow before I could step closer.
I looked at Rosa's shaking hands. My voice had become the voice I used in warehouses and private rooms. She was a grandmother waiting to learn whether her child would survive.

I made myself lower it.
"Please. I need to know whether she's mine."
Rosa closed her eyes.
Hannah found us a consultation room. Mateo stayed with her outside; Marco remained near the entrance.
Rosa sat across from me without taking off her coat.
"Sofia met you when she was twenty-one," she said.
"I remember."
"You were kind to her. At first."
Those last two words stayed between us.
"She was pregnant when she left?"
"She found out shortly afterward. She wrote to you."
"I received a letter saying she couldn't live in my world. Nothing about a baby."
"That was the letter you were allowed to receive."
My hands went still on the table.
Rosa explained slowly. Sofia had gone to Wisconsin. She had written again after learning she was pregnant, then sent another letter with an address where I could reach her. Rosa had posted them herself.
"She waited," she said. "Every time the phone rang, she thought it might be you."
"I never saw them."
"We didn't know that."
"Where was she when Elena was born?"
"Outside Madison. I was there. She asked me whether a baby could recognize a voice she'd only heard before she was born."
I looked away.
"Did you tell her I wouldn't have ignored that letter?"
"I told her many things. I don't know which ones helped."
"Is Sofia alive?"
Rosa looked at the closed door.
"Yes."
For seventeen years, uncertainty had let me imagine anything. Death. Marriage. Happiness somewhere far beyond my reach.
One word removed every defense.
"Where?"
"She lived in Oregon for years. She changed her name. Claire Martin. She works with accounts. Quiet jobs, ordinary places."
"Why hasn't anyone told me?"
"Because men from your uncle's office kept finding us."
Antonio had died three years earlier. Until then, his office had handled my correspondence, my appointments, the information I believed was mine.
I turned to Marco. "Find out who controlled his mail. Quietly."
He went into the corridor.
Rosa took an envelope from her purse. My first name stood on it in faded blue ink.
"This was written six years ago."
"Why keep it until now?"
"I tried to send it. A man brought it back. He showed me a photograph of Mateo outside his school."
I glanced through the window at the boy sitting with Hannah.
"He's Sofia's son?"
"Her sister's. My younger daughter died when he was little. Sofia helped me raise him. He and Elena grew up together."
Another life I knew nothing about. Another loss I had missed.
"Did the man say I sent him?"
"No. He didn't have to. He came from the people you trusted."
I turned the envelope over. It had been opened and carefully taped shut.
"I read it after he returned it," Rosa said. "I was frightened. I'm still frightened."
"You think I'll hurt her?"
She met my eyes. "I think you can hurt people without ever deciding to."
Before I could answer, Hannah opened the door.
"Elena is out of surgery. She's alive."
Rosa began to cry. I stood because relief made sitting impossible.
The surgeon spoke to her outside. The delivered blood had arrived in time; the team had controlled the bleeding. There were still serious hours ahead, but there was a future in which the girl opened her eyes.
I held Sofia's envelope against my palm.
Then Marco returned with an older man in a navy coat.
"Daniel Mercer," he said. "He's listed as a family contact. Rosa knows him."
Rosa turned. "Did she send you?"
"Yes," Daniel said. "She's driving down from Wisconsin. She's been there for work this week."
He looked at the letter in my hand.
"You finally got it."
"Where is she?"
"On her way. But before she gets here, you need to understand something."
He handed me a photograph: Sofia outside a small Oregon house, Elena at about eight beside her, Mateo grinning on the other side.
On the back, in the handwriting I remembered, was a sentence.
Luca, if Elena ever needs you, it means they found us.
