"I Saved a Dying Girl. She Was the Daughter I Never Knew." Chapter 5
The Night I Let Her Leave
I knew which night she meant.
The canvas bag. The boiling kettle. My uncle's name lighting up my phone while she stood beside the kitchen table.
For years I had remembered the end of that argument. Her leaving. The door closing. My anger at being abandoned.
Sofia made me look at the beginning.
"There were two men outside my building," she said. "One of them followed me from work. I told you."
"I remember."
"You said Antonio wouldn't do anything without talking to you."
I rubbed a hand over my mouth.
"I thought he was checking—"
"Checking what? Whether I was worth keeping? Whether I was a problem?"
"I didn't know."
"You didn't ask."
That was harder to defend than ignorance.
Sofia moved a photograph aside. "I packed enough for a few nights. I wasn't asking you to leave everything forever. I wanted to go somewhere he couldn't send someone to knock on my door."
"You wanted me to come."
"Yes."
I had told her we would talk after I finished dealing with a shipment. Then Antonio had called. I had raised a finger to ask her to wait.
She had watched that finger as though it settled something.
"I told you not to make me choose," I said.
"I remember."
"And I said you were upset. That we'd discuss it when you were calmer."
"I wasn't shouting."
No. She hadn't been.
I had preferred shouting. Shouting would have let me call the whole thing an argument instead of a frightened woman asking the man she loved to believe her.
"I should have gone with you."
Sofia looked down.
"You should have listened. Even if you couldn't leave that night. You could have asked what happened. You could have called him while I was there."
"I trusted him."
"I know."
She didn't add more. She didn't need to.
Outside, someone laughed quietly at the nurses' station. The ordinary sound made the room feel more unbearable.
"I looked for you," I said.
"Daniel told me."
"Antonio brought me reports. Dead ends. Addresses where you'd never been."
"And you believed those too."
I lowered my eyes.
"Yes."
For a moment she pressed her fingertips against her forehead.
"I don't want to sit here and hurt you for hours, Luca. I'm tired. Our daughter is in a hospital bed."
Our daughter.
The words almost distracted me from everything I deserved to hear.
"You can tell me," I said. "All of it."
"Not tonight."
I nodded and made myself leave that answer alone.
She untied another bundle of photographs. Elena with cake on her cheeks. Elena holding a drawing. Elena beside Mateo on a porch, both wearing paper crowns.
"Her fifth birthday," Sofia said. "She wanted a castle cake. I couldn't make the towers stand up."
"Did she mind?"
"She said it looked like a castle after a battle. Mateo put toy soldiers in the frosting."

I smiled, then saw Sofia in the background of the picture. Her hands rested on the counter. She was watching the children, her face exhausted.
"Who took it?"
"Daniel. He visited that weekend."
I had imagined another man in her life as a rival. Instead, he had been there to hold a camera while my daughter blew out candles.
"Was she happy?"
Sofia looked at me steadily. "Often. She wasn't miserable every day because you weren't there."
"I didn't mean—"
"I know. But don't turn her childhood into nothing except what you missed. There were good things."
I studied the frosting soldiers.
"Tell me about those."
She did. A neighbor who taught Elena to sew. A school librarian who let her borrow extra books. Rosa's Sunday lunches. Mateo sleeping on the floor beside Elena's bed after a nightmare because he refused to admit he was frightened.
I listened until Sofia's voice grew rough.
Then she showed me a letter from when Elena was seven.
It had never been addressed.
Luca, she asked if fathers can forget their children's names. I told her you didn't know her name. I don't know whether that was kinder.
I set the letter down and gripped my knees beneath the table.
"Did she hate me?"
"Some days. Some days she made up stories about you. Sometimes she didn't want to talk about you at all."
"What did you say?"
"That you were someone I loved. That your life was dangerous. That grown-ups sometimes fail each other."
"You could have said worse."
"I did say worse. To my mother. After she was asleep."
The smallest trace of her old humor passed between us. I wanted to grab it and keep it alive. Instead, I let her reach for her water.
Marco knocked and stayed at the door when I told him to enter.
"Hospital security identified the company insignia on the visitor's coat," he said. "Northstar. Victor Hale still controls the renamed business."
Sofia went still.
"He came to the house after Elena was born," she said. "He called it protection."
"We have a former employee willing to provide records," Marco continued. "With their lawyer. Copies, not anything taken from an office."
"Tell them to contact the investigators," I said. "And make sure Sofia can see anything concerning her."
Marco looked at her. "Of course."
After he left, Sofia began putting the letters back into the box.
I helped with the photographs. Our hands touched over the image of Elena's first birthday.
Sofia withdrew hers.
"I never stopped loving you," I said.
She sat very still.
"You don't know who I am now."
"Then let me find out."
Her eyes shone, but her voice stayed steady.
"You can try to be her father. She deserves that choice."
"And you?"
Sofia closed the lid.
"You and I ended a long time ago."
I helped her carry the box back to Elena's room. At the doorway she took it from me, careful not to touch my fingers.
"Will you be here tomorrow?" she asked.
"Yes."
"For her."
I looked through the glass at the girl sleeping beneath the white blanket.
"For her," I agreed.
Sofia nodded and went inside. I stayed in the corridor until Hannah asked whether I was waiting for someone.
For the first time in my life, I didn't know what to say.
