"I Saved a Dying Girl. She Was the Daughter I Never Knew." Chapter 8
This Time, I Let Her Choose
"Where in Wisconsin?"
Sofia looked tired before I finished asking.
"Madison. My mother can come up while Elena recovers. Mateo's school has already agreed to work with us for a short stay."
"There's good care here."
"There is good care there too."
"I can find you an apartment here without—"
"Luca."
I stopped.
She stood beside the table, holding the box between us.
"I'm telling you what I've decided. I'm not inviting you to solve it."
My first impulse was to call someone. A doctor. A property manager. Anyone who could give me a reason she had to stay.
She watched me fight it.
"Do you want me to leave?" she asked.
"No."
"Then why are you still sitting there?"
"Because you do."
She put the box down again, slowly.
"I need somewhere I can breathe. I need to know that a kiss doesn't hand my life back to you."
"It doesn't."
"Then let me go without making me pay for it."
I nodded.
It took more effort than any threat I had ever made.
Two days later, Miriam Cole came to the hospital with a lawyer. My mother's sister had spent most of my childhood elsewhere. I remembered perfume, stiff holiday cards, and Antonio lowering his voice whenever she entered a room.
Now she was a woman in a green coat, leaning on a cane.
Sofia agreed to speak to her in a consultation room. I waited outside until she asked me in.
Miriam's eyes were red.
"I thought I was protecting you," she said.
"From a woman who loved me?"
"From having a child inside that family."
Sofia sat with her hands folded.
"You knew I was frightened," she said. "You sent money through someone else. You could have helped me speak to him."
"Antonio said—"
"I know what he said. I'm asking what you chose."
Miriam lowered her head.
She admitted helping Antonio keep the surveillance network funded. Six years earlier, believing Victor still worked toward the same supposed protection, she had passed him information obtained from Rosa.
"I didn't know he would threaten you," she whispered.
"What did you think surveillance was for?" Sofia asked.
Miriam had no useful answer.
Her lawyer explained that she was providing records and cooperating with investigators. Sofia asked for copies of everything concerning herself and Elena.
"I can't forgive you today," she told Miriam. "Please don't ask me to."
Afterward we sat in the hallway.
"I wanted you in the room," Sofia said. "I didn't want to explain it again later."
"Thank you for asking."
She rested her head against the wall.
"I used to think learning the truth would make me feel better."
"Does it?"
"Some parts. Other parts make me realize how many people watched me struggle and did nothing."
I looked at my hands.
"I'm one of them."
She didn't spare me by denying it.

Investigators received Daniel's copies, the former employee's records, Enzo's account, and the hospital footage. What Sofia had kept in the blue box mattered because it connected dates and threats to names the records didn't explain by themselves.
Victor was arrested before Elena left the hospital. The investigators told us the alleged attacks and the surveillance operation were being examined together. Nothing was settled merely because he was in custody.
I wanted a faster ending.
I didn't create one.
On Monday I called a meeting with the men who still managed Antonio's private arrangements. Marco and Enzo attended, Enzo moving carefully with a cane he despised.
I ended the covert monitoring contracts and ordered the existing records preserved for the investigation. I also withdrew from business arrangements that paid for private intimidation dressed up as security.
An older associate named Bellini leaned back in his chair.
"You're doing this over a woman?"
"I'm doing it because I should have done it years ago."
"Those contracts protect your interests."
"They kept my daughter hidden from me."
"You didn't know about her."
"Exactly."
He said two partners would pull out. One did before the week ended. My attorney warned me about losses, liabilities, and what could happen when I released records involving people who had once trusted my silence.
I listened and signed what I needed to sign.
This wasn't a clean transformation accomplished over a desk. There were other parts of my life I would have to confront. But this part was mine to change, and I stopped asking whether Sofia would reward me for it.
Elena left the hospital on Friday.
I arrived with the vehicle Sofia had requested, not the one I wanted to send. Her sister's old suitcase stood beside the bed. Rosa packed medication while Mateo tried to fold a blanket into a bag too small for it.
"You're making it worse," Elena told him.
"You're welcome," he answered.
I handed Sofia the typed recovery notes. She checked the folder.
"You remembered the follow-up numbers."
"Elena corrected my spelling."
"Most of it," Elena said.
Outside, I helped with the luggage. When I opened Sofia's door, she stood beside it without getting in.
"No one following us?"
"No one. The safety arrangements you discussed with the investigators are yours. Marco's available if you ask."
She searched my face.
"All right."
Elena held out her hand. I took it carefully.
"You can call," she said.
"When?"
"After dinner. Not every five minutes."
"I can manage that."
"We'll see."
She got into the car. Rosa and Mateo followed.
Sofia paused before sitting down.
"You've been different these last few days."
"I'm trying."
"I noticed."
It wasn't forgiveness. I let it be what it was.
"Can I call you too?" I asked.
Her hand rested on the open door.
"Yes," she said. "Ask how I am. Don't start by telling me what I should do."
"How are you?"
She gave a small, weary smile.
"Ask me tomorrow."
I closed the door and stepped back.
For the second time in my life, I watched Sofia leave.
This time, she hadn't needed to disappear to do it.
