"Everyone Feared Me. Then My Maid Climbed Into My Bed." Chapter 2
SHE DIDN'T LEAVE
By the end of Emma's second week, I knew the sound of her cleaning cart.
One wheel clicked at irregular intervals. The rest of the staff could glide through a room without moving the air. Emma arrived with that stubborn click, a bucket, and absolutely no interest in whether I was in a reasonable mood.
I told myself the noise irritated me.
When maintenance fixed the wheel, the corridor seemed wrong for two nights.
She cleaned around my temper as though it were another stain. If I was on the telephone, she waited until I finished before switching on a machine. If I shouted at someone, she moved breakable objects away from my elbow and continued dusting.
The first time she did that, I caught her wrist above a crystal bowl.
"What are you doing?"
"Moving this."
"Why?"
She looked at the bowl, then at the open door through which my accountant had just fled.
"It looks expensive."
I released her. She put it on a higher shelf.
I didn't throw anything that evening. The fact that she had expected me to stayed with me longer than the accountant's mistake.
Other things stayed too.
She always checked the cart before leaving a room. She never used her phone while working, but looked at it immediately afterward. When Mrs. Alvarez offered coffee, she accepted it with an expression I had seen men reserve for successful negotiations.
Once, I found her cleaning the library windows while the cook explained that my dinner had gone cold.
"Then heat it," I snapped.
"The sauce will separate, sir. I can prepare another—"
"I didn't ask for a lecture about sauce."
The cook stopped talking.
Emma squeezed water from her cloth into the bucket. The sound was unnecessarily loud.
"Something to add?" I asked.
"Only that you haven't eaten the last three dinners."
The cook looked at her as if she'd reached into a cage.
"Were you counting?"
"I carry the plates downstairs."
"That's your job."
"Exactly. I'd rather carry empty ones. They're lighter."
The cook made a strangled noise. I looked at him, and he abruptly discovered something urgent in the kitchen.
Emma wiped the glass.
"You can stop looking at me. I'm not going to force-feed you."
"That would be difficult."
"It would also take too long."
I ate the reheated dinner after she left.
Nobody commented on the empty plate. Someone must have warned them.
The bad night came on a Tuesday.
It was almost two. I had dismissed the nurse from my room because I couldn't stand another question about comfort. Comfort had become an insulting word. Pillows, temperature, soft blankets. Everything was adjustable except what actually hurt.
I sat beside the bed, waiting for the wave to pass.
It didn't.
Pain tore through my legs so sharply that I bent forward and gripped my thighs. My palms felt fabric. Nothing underneath it answered. Sweat slid down my neck, and my breathing turned ugly.

I tried to reach the call button on the bedside table. Another spasm of pain stopped me.
The door was open. I had left it that way after the nurse went out.
Emma appeared with a folded stack of towels.
She looked at my face and immediately set them down.
"Get out," I hissed.
She stepped closer instead.
"Where are your pills?"
"I said leave."
"Kitchen or bathroom?"
The calm question enraged me more than pity would have.
"Kitchen. Left of the sink."
"I'll get the nurse."
"Don't bring a crowd in here."
"One nurse isn't a crowd."
She used the wall phone in the corridor. I heard her give my room number, followed by a brief description. Then she went downstairs.
I hated that she had seen me. I hated the sound I made when the next wave arrived. Most of all, I hated waiting for her footsteps to return.
She came back with the labeled bottle, a glass of water, and the nurse directly behind her.
The nurse checked the chart and gave her a single tablet to pass to me while she examined the monitor.
"Two," I said.
Emma glanced at the bottle.
"She's checking when you last had it."
"I know when I last had it. Give me another."
"No."
I stared at her.
She held out the water.
"Take this one. Let her do her job."
My hand shook badly enough that she had to steady the bottom of the glass. She didn't look away from my face while she did it.
I swallowed the tablet.
The nurse stayed until the worst of the episode eased, explaining what she was doing rather than praising me for tolerating it. I could manage that. When she offered to remain in the doorway, I nodded once.
Emma picked up the towels.
"You haven't eaten, have you?"
"Apparently everyone keeps records of that now."
"There's a sandwich downstairs."
"I'm not hungry."
"Then leave it beside you. You might be later."
I closed my eyes. It was easier than watching her see the sweat drying on my face.
"You can go back to work."
"I was planning to."
She left the towels on the chair, disappeared, and returned with a plate.
The sandwich had been cut in half. There was a small bowl of soup beside it.
"The kitchen says it's still warm."
"Does the kitchen have opinions about everything?"
"Mostly food."
She placed the tray within reach, moved the water away from the edge, and crouched to retrieve the towel that had slipped to the floor.
Her hands caught my attention again. The cracks were worse. A strip of plaster had loosened around one finger.
"Do they not provide gloves?"
She looked down.
"They do."
"Then wear them."
"I do. Some of this is from my other job."
"The diner?"
She glanced up, surprised.
"Mrs. Alvarez mentioned it," I said.

"Yes. The diner."
"How many hours?"
"Nine today."
"Before this shift?"
"Usually."
I looked at the clock. Two seventeen.
"And you get here how?"
"Two buses."
The answer sounded absurd inside a house with six vehicles in the garage.
"Why not find somewhere closer?"
She stood with the towel in her hand.
"Because somewhere closer doesn't pay thirty dollars an hour."
I could have argued. It would have required pretending I understood choices made with no money, and for once I didn't want to hear myself do that.
"Did you eat?" I asked.
"At work."
"Which work?"
She smiled faintly, as if I had caught her at something.
"I'll get something before I leave."
I pushed the plate toward the empty side of the tray.
"There's half a sandwich."
"It's your sandwich."
"And I don't intend to write my name on it."
She looked at me for a second, then pulled the small chair closer. She perched on its edge with the sandwich in a napkin, ready to get up at the slightest interruption.
We ate without talking for a while. My hands gradually stopped shaking.
"You don't have to sit there looking prepared to run," I said.
"I'm prepared to get back to work."
"Naturally."
She finished before me, wiped the crumbs from her fingers, and stood.
"Do you need anything else?"
I almost said yes.
I didn't know what the rest of the sentence would have been.
"No."
She took the empty bowl but left the sandwich where I could reach it. At the door, she checked that the nurse was still nearby.
Then she went back to cleaning.
For the first time in months, someone had seen me at my worst and made the room feel less unbearable.
I lay awake afterward, listening to her work on the other side of the wall.
When the sounds stopped, I wanted them back.
